BLURB:
JJ's investment career spans more than five decades. He has been the chief investment strategist for a pension plan sponsor, a managing director and senior consultant within a global investment planning consultant firm, and a managing director and chief operating officer of an investment management organization. Over his career, JJ has attended well over a thousand investment committee meetings as a plan sponsor, a consultant, and a money manager. In the majority of these meetings, he has found that committee members lack three things: in-depth investment expertise to effectively carry out their fiduciary responsibilities, the necessary time allocation to administer and manage the investment program in the best interests of the beneficiaries, and the ability to develop an efficient monitoring system to hold all service providers accountable for the products and services they provide.
This book outlines the steps to be taken in establishing investment policy; formulating asset mix strategy; creating an appropriate investment management structure; undertaking investment manager searches; and highlighting the conflicts of interest, biases, and self-interests of the various service providers.
This book is designed to assist members of investment committees in their role as fiduciaries/trustees/administrators.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
Just a thought:
Over
the years, I have found that if there is
a
50/50 chance of me being right or wrong,
I will be wrong at least 90% of the time.
The investment management community lives and dies by the performance results of the portfolios and funds managed by investment professions. Very few industries have the degree of oversight and scrutiny that is placed on all aspects of the activities that go into delivering investment performance (from investment policy at the plan sponsor level through to implementation at the investment manager level). It is virtually the only industry in which the participants know on a day-to-day (or even minute-by-minute) basis whether their portfolios are achieving the return objectives of the plan sponsors.
Many factors have the potential to impact overall performance results materially—long before the monies have even been placed with the investment managers. The decisions made at the policy level can have a greater negative impact on fund performance than can the underperformance of an investment manager. However, it appears that investment committee members spend around 90% of their time tracking money manager performance, and firing/hiring managers when things go wrong, leaving little time to evaluate the bigger picture.
As a result, there are several potential performance inhibitors that could have a significant detrimental impact on overall portfolio returns (and even risk levels), regardless of how prudent investment committee members have been. These performance inhibitors, included below, are: unclear investment guidelines, diversification overload, time mismatch, poor communication, ineffective investment committees, too much useless information, and misleading and incomplete academic studies and articles.
