Secret Lady
by Beth Trissel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: New Adult, Time Travel, Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At Lavender House, Evie McIntyre is haunted by the whispers from her bedroom closet. Be-fore she can make sense of their murmurs, the house "warbles" between times and transports her to the Civil War. Past and present have blended, and Evie wishes she'd paid more attention to history. Especially since former Confederate officer, Jack Ramsey, could use a heads up.

Torn between opposing forces, Jack struggles to defend the valley and people he loves. Meet-ing Evie turns his already tumultuous world upside down. Will solving the mystery of the whispers return her home, and will the handsome scout be by her side?

Against the background of Sheridan's Burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Jack and Evie fight to save their friends and themselves – or is history carved in stone?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
“They brought the draft back?” This was it. She had officially lost her mind.
“It never went away. Where have you been, miss? More to the point, who are you?” His gruff demand
stirred the hair at her cheek.
She tilted her face at him. Only the barest outline of his strong features was visible, and yet… Man, was he hot. Focus Evie. “I told you. I’m Evie McIntyre. I live here with my grandmother. Didn’t you realize?”
“That so? I don’t suppose you would be a spy in a Mennonite house. Still. Never know. I best get a good look at you.”
“Who would I be spying for?”
“Rebs. Neither side wishes me well. I’m in no man’s land.”
Her heart drummed wildly. “Where does that leave me?”
“That’s the question, isn’t it?” He steadied Evie on her feet.
Was it? She had no idea what was going on and watched dazedly as he took something from the leather
pouch hanging over his shoulder. “What’s that?”
“Lucifers.”
He’d lost her again. There must be a powerful resistance movement at work. She didn’t follow
politics. Maybe she should. Had matters come to an explosive head tonight? Why hadn’t her grandmother said something?
He drew what resembled matches from a small metal container and struck one. Sulphurous sparks
added pungency to the room. He lit the stubby candle in a tin lantern on an end table. Shadows danced from the pale taper glowing through the punches in the metal. Pretty, how the light made patterns on the ceiling.
Wait. Where had that lantern come from?
The stained-glass lamp Grandma G. treasured was just there before she went to bed. Dear God in heaven. What had happened to the room?
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book was such a fun, exciting, romantic, historical adventure!
This book starts out at present time in Virginia where Evie is staying with her Gran at the beautiful and historical landmark, the Lavender and Lace Herb Farm in the breathtaking Shenandoah Valley.  Evie starts hearing whispers coming from her closet, but before she can really investigate, she is transported back in time to the Civil War.  Evie quickly meets Jack, a former Confederate officer, who pretends to be her husband to make the transition there a bit easier for her.  With time running out before the Burning of the Shenandoah Valley will Evie be able to find a way back home before it’s too late?  Or was she meant to always be sent back to the Civil War to be with Jack?  When Evie learns that Jack actually dies in the Civil War will she be able to save him?  And bring him back with her to the future?  Are these two soulmates and destined for true love?  Sorry – no spoilers here!  But you’ll definitely want to find out how this one ends!
I really liked the main characters, Evie, Jack, and Gran.  They were likable, kind, and genuine.
I loved Evie and Jack together – they fit well together and just had that instant connection you could actually feel leap off the pages!!!  I enjoyed that their romance was sweet (PG rating) as it was a nice getaway from the usual modern R-Rated world of today.  That’s always the fun part about reading time-travel books that take you to a time where guys spoke slow, romantic sonnets and actually spent time wooing the girl – no swiping rights here lol.
Love is always worth fighting for and I enjoyed following the story and cheering for the characters!
I enjoyed the history lessons that were weaved throughout the book and learning more about the Civil War and the impact on the Shenandoah Valley.
The author’s writing is strong and vividly detailed.  She really provided so much detail in her writing that is was easy to picture!  There were a few times I found myself totally caught up in the story!
Furthermore, I also enjoyed reading the passages with the Civil War Era customs and traditions.  It is clear, Mrs. Trissel is familiar with the culture and was able to add significant historical refences into fun and interesting scenes while showing a strong knowledge of the area.
There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
This book is book three in the Ladies in Time Book Series.  However, it can be read as a standalone.  I had not read the first two books before reading this book, however, as much as I’ve enjoyed reading this book I definitely wish I had.  So, I would definitely encourage readers to check out the entire series.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it to all new adult, time-travel, and romance readers!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Women's Issues; Photography

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
From the time we are young, girls are pressured into a set belief of beauty standards. Hair is certainly high on the list and is often labeled as our "crown and glory." Where does this notion fit for a girl with alopecia (the partial or complete absence of hair from areas of the body where it normally grows; baldness)? This new coffee table book should bring light to the issue.
I Am More Than My Hair: My Outward Appearance Does Not Define Me, is a two-part project, documentary film and coffee table book. The newly published book features 138 portraits of 46 women and the stories of their experience with hair loss, as well as women who cut their hair in solidarity of a loved one.
Debbie, 31
Pull-Quote:
My friends and family supported me
Story:
On May 24, 2011, I discovered a large mass in my left breast while I was doing my self-check. Later that day, I went to the National Cancer Prevention Institute in Lagos for a breast screening. A nurse screened both my breasts and my cervix and referred me for sonography, which was done at a local scanning center. On June 3, 2011, I had a Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology procedure at Me Cure Health Care Limited to diagnose my condition. I was told that the breast lump was benign and that the left auxiliary lymph node was negative for malignant cells. On June 11, 2011, I had my first lumpectomy at a local medical center.
Barely four months later, I discovered another lump slightly above the previous operation site and had surgery at the same hospital. But this time, I insisted on further medical investigation to know why the cancer recurred. That’s when I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma. By April 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage IV carcinoma.
I had withheld the news from my dad because he was hospitalized for paralysis, but with the latest diagnosis, I couldn’t hold the news any longer. I told my dad about it on July 31, 2012 hoping he had gained enough strength to handle the news but, unfortunately for me, he passed on to glory the following day, which was my birthday, August 1, 2012.
My friends and family supported me and, before I knew what was happening, all my friends joined a campaign for me on Twitter tagged “walk against cancer, #savedebbie.” I got the exact amount of money I needed for my treatment in the United States ($55,000), but I had to start chemotherapy right away in Nigeria.
I arrived in the United States in October 2012 and started treatment at Howard University Hospital. I had chemotherapy for 10 months followed by a bilateral mastectomy in October 2013. To the glory of God, I survived Stage IV breast cancer, but I am still fighting bone and liver cancer.
Rest in peace, Debbie: August 1, 1984 – April 1, 2016.
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Troyan Pryce had it all—a forensic pathology career, loving family, baby on the way—until a Mob kingpin bought her. Forced to use her special training and exceptional looks to rob men of their millions, she’s given up hope of ever having a life again, let alone finding romance. Until she meets her next mark, Assistant District Attorney Zachariah Taylor.

Detective Grace Griffin dedicated years to breaking a human trafficking ring. When her best friend, Zachariah, falls for a victim and is taken by the Mob, she must risk her life, badge, and heart to rescue him and the woman he loves. Can she save them, or will they all end up dead?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
The girl huddled on the concrete bench in the corner of the cell, her knees tucked to her chin. She appraised Griff with green eyes, then looked away. Her stretch leggings were a size too small and her top plunged to dangerous levels. Bright red nails and false lashes added finishing touches. The spike heels that completed the ensemble sat outside the cell door.
Griff sat next to her. “I’m Detective Griffin ”She turned her face away and remained silent.
“I want to help you. I know you’re a slave, not a hooker.. This isn’t your life. They took your life from you.”
The girl scooted closer to the wall. “You’re going to get me killed.”
“Give me a name and I can end this.”
“I talk to you, I’m dead.”
“Is it Rosetti? Just blink. Twice for yes, once for no.”
She swallowed and blinked twice.
Griff opened the girl’s file and read the name. “Carrie. I’m going to help you. Hang in there, okay?”
Keys rattled in the lock and the door opened. An expensive suit filled the doorway in front of the duty officer. Carrie got to her feet and squeezed out of the cell.
“I hope you weren’t interviewing my client without her attorney present,” the suit said.
Griff stood eye to eye with the lawyer. “Of course not. I check on all the girls to make sure they don’t need medical assistance. She fully exercised her right to remain silent, and seems perfectly healthy.” She snapped the file closed and shouldered past him.
“Well?” Stacey asked when Griff returned to her desk.
“Definitely Rosetti’s. One of his hounds showed up before I got very far.”
“Now what?”
“Get inside Rosetti’s estate.”
“Good lord. If you disappear, where should I look?”
“The river or the morgue.”
“That’s not funny.”
“It wasn’t a joke,” she said on her way out the door. The bruises on Carrie’s neck and arms weren’t from an affectionate boyfriend. She needed help and, apparently, Griff was the only one willing to try.
The traffic blurred as the sun sank into a lava flow of cloud. Streetlights blinked on as she took the long route up the hill. She parked in the shadow of a hedged yard and killed the engine. Through the binoculars, Rosetti’s gate resembled a castle entrance. Fine brickwork and scrolled iron. A guard station squatted on the left side of the cobbled drive. Strategically placed floodlights revealed security pacing the fence. Handguns and batons hung from their belts.
Cracks of golden light seeped through drawn drapes on the massive house. And behind those drapes, a varied collection of human product. Whatever their clients could afford, they could have. Rosetti made sure of it.
Straight up prostitution. Easy peasy. Kids? No problem. If the product gave him trouble, snuff. Have fun with it. Knock yourself out. Pay before play. That money trickled through the filter of a hundred businesses, dripping out squeaky clean at the bottom. His web of connections kept him untouchable.
Griff planned to touch him.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book was such an interesting, suspenseful, and intriguing read!
I really liked the storyline and that it shed light on the modern-day slavery and trafficking world.  As it is an important topic and issue that is very active today, and ever more so here in Portland, Oregon, one of the highest cited cities of sex-trafficking in our country!!!
I liked the main characters, Troyan, ADA Zach, and Detective Grace, “Griff.”  They were realistic, likable, and genuine.
I felt awful for the difficult condition Troyan was put into and couldn’t imagine being sold to an evil mob boss and being ripped away from everything I knew and loved.  Regardless of being in such a dire position Troyan still held out hope for her future, especially after meeting her next required assignment and mark, ADA Zach.  I liked how much Zach wanted to help Troyan and what lengths he went to protecting her.  I like how tough and badass Griff is.  It’s clear she cares and values Zach.
This book is fast-paced and full of action that keeps you completely captivated in the story!  Between the blazing gun fights that had me squinting my eyes worried for my main characters and the holding my breath moments during the characters hiding – hoping they wouldn’t get found – it was at times an emotional rollercoaster ride!
There are some exciting twists and turns and unexpected moments that will keep you guessing!
This book has a great storyline that flows, terrific writing style with detailed scenes, well-developed characters, is fast paced, and keeps you completely entertained through the last page.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend this book to all romantic suspense readers!
