Shelter from Our Secrets, Silence & Shame:

How Our Stories Can Keep Us Stuck or Set Us Free

by Rebecca Brown, MSW, RSW

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-Help / Personal Growth / Self-Esteem
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

As a mental health clinician, Rebecca Brown has been a safe place for many to seek shelter from their secrets, silence and shame. Inspired to finally slow down, stop running from herself and share her own story, she found ways to seek and savour her own shelter.

Rebecca's personal journey takes us through sadness, tragedy, self-sabotage, the impossible pursuit of perfection, distorted thinking and eating, engaging with her shadow self, divorce, and numbing with alcohol, all in an attempt to avoid the story needing to be shared.

Dispelling the limiting beliefs we hold about ourselves can unlock our limitless potential to reach goals we never dared to dream. From the Boston Marathon to working with horses, Rebecca sets out to prove to herself that anything is possible when you don't listen to the negative stories you tell yourself.

Everyone has a story. We become who we are because of what has happened to us, and because of the stories we tell ourselves. But do our stories continue to serve us well, or keep us stuck? Are our stories fact or fiction? Is it time to rewrite the versions we have been telling ourselves?

Shelter provides strategies to help reframe the thinking patterns we have developed, and offers tools to recognize when we are suffering from our own thoughts, feelings and actions. Resilience-building techniques are woven through the pages, and encouragement for the lifelong journey of collecting moments of awe and happiness.

Seeking and reading Shelter is a gift of self-compassion and self-discovery. Rebecca's hope is that it will be read with a highlighter in hand, pages folded down, re-read, recommended to a friend, and used as a guide to start sharing our own stories with those we love.

We may not have written our beginnings, but we have the ability to write every word from this point forward and just imagine where our stories can take us when we are free of secrets, silence and shame.

EXCERPT TWO:

My back story begins with a career in medical social work, my dream job. I knew from the time I was sixteen years old that I wanted to help people with the challenges life puts in our paths. I was a pretty good student, and in my last few years of high school I really buckled down because I’d set my mind on exactly what I wanted to do. I knew which university I needed to go to, and I worked hard to get there. It was also the farthest university in the province from where I lived, which was exactly where I wanted to be at that time. As far away from home as I could get.

I also knew that I didn’t want just any social work career. I wanted to work in a hospital with people who had experienced trauma. This felt comfortable to me. I could stay calm in a crisis and understood the impact of life-changing traumatic events on a person and their family. I worked hard through my undergrad program, and in my fourth-year internship, I was accepted to work in a hospital rehabilitation program for patients with spinal cord injuries.

I was exactly where I needed to be.

I knew that I could help people here.

I loved this job.

My patients were primarily sixteen-to-thirty-year-old males who were injured while engaging in high-risk behaviours, like cliff diving, drunk driving, or contact sports, or in vehicular accidents. Some had attempted suicide. Others had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time and had broken their necks, backs, or seriously damaged their spinal cords.

My patients were beautiful young men, full of life and often the life of their parties.

Until the accident.

GUEST POST:

Five Reasons You Should Read My Book

Hi Fabulous Readers & Bloggers, I am thrilled to be part of this blog tour and will try to answer the following questions, in hopes of giving you an inside glimpse of my book and my reasons for writing it.

1.) I have been a mental health clinician for over 35 years, and I would never have imagined that a person who spends her career helping others make sense of their lives, can feel like a complete mess on the inside herself, at times! Too often we assume that people in the mental health world have it all figured out, and therefore must be experts on this stuff.  Well, spoiler alert, we don’t!  We are as human, flawed, imperfect, scared, anxious, depressed, traumatized and feel all of the feels that you do!

2.) I have struggled, stumbled and staggered along my path in life which has taken me through peaks and valleys and I have searched for meaning and understanding, which I have often found in books and words of others who have been on similar paths, just a few steps ahead of me.  I wrote this book for a younger version of myself, twenty years ago.  Part of my reason for writing my story, is to share the wisdom that I have collected along my journey, to share with readers, who are a few steps behind me, to serve as a road map if you find yourself similarly lost or stuck.

3.) My book is written with you, the reader, in mind as my co-pilot.  I wanted to create a feeling that you are traveling with me and seeing life from the perspective that I was.  It made sense to me as a child, a teenager, a young woman, a mother, wife and daughter.  The stories I was told, or told myself became the beliefs I held onto.  It took decades to understand that they were not always true, and that I had the power to rewrite them.  And when we are empowered to write our own story, the possibilities are limitless as to where we can go (the Boston Marathon) or what we can do (working with horses in a mental health setting) or having the courage to end a 23 year marriage.

4.) Uncovering buried secrets, can lead to discovering painful pasts, but also to unlocking new understanding and compassion for ourselves and others.  We cannot heal what we keep hidden, and by stirring up history, my own and others within my family has led to a deep compassion and understanding of who people are beneath their surfaces.  We all have a story.  I hope that sharing mine, encourages you, dear readers, to have the courage to share yours, and discover your own buried treasures and gifts.

5.) I wrote my book and divided some pretty important life events into the chapters.  Then I had to go back and check in with the people in my life, and share with them what I wrote.  My parents, my husband, my sisters, my kids (now adults) my ex-husband, and several other important people.  This was a terrifying process, hitting send on my manuscript, and then waiting, and waiting, and waiting for their responses.  Well, I’m happy to say that everyone (almost) has completely supported and encouraged me to go through with publishing my story. I now spend my time sharing my book and all my stories with total strangers, and everyone who knows me. It has been the most courageous and authentic thing I have ever done in my life. And I am honored and humbled to share it with you too, in hopes that you will enjoy it, and find your courage. It’s there, buried beneath the secrets, silence and shame.

Murder at Serengeti Plains

by Pat Duggan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Murder at Serengeti Plains is the third mystery novel in the series, featuring amateur sleuths Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl.  The earlier novels are Murder at Eagles Nest and Could They Be Twins?

The book is set in a new residential subdivision, Serengeti Plains, built by the renowned local builder, Zebra Homes.  It is located in the peaceful, historic town of Centerville, Ohio.  However, peace is shattered when the new residents are awakened one morning by the sound of police sirens.  The procession of police cars, come to rest in their own neighborhood.  A body has been discovered!  Was it an accident or was it murder?

Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl have recently moved into this new subdivision.  They have previously helped the police to solve murders in both Florida and Ohio, but they did not expect to find one on their own doorstep.  When the police begin to look at their friend as the perpetrator, they find themselves drawn into yet another murder investigation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The National News on television led off with a headline about house prices and the shortage of homes for sale throughout the country.  In Centerville, Ohio there was a growing, new sub-division, Serengeti Plains, being built by Zebra Homes.  The builder named the development after a district in Africa where zebras roam wild.  His company was well respected and recognized for building beautiful single-family homes, laid out to form desirable neighborhoods and the Serengeti Community was fast becoming a gem amongst their many projects in the area.
The construction site was a hive of activity, with multiple homes in various stages of completion as demand for new homes pressured the builder to construct his properties as quickly as possible.  There were contractors of various disciplines swarming all over the building site, working feverishly to complete each unit while maintaining the builder’s required quality and standards.
All of this activity invariably led to disagreements and friction amongst the workers.  One man in particular, Larry Cox, who worked for the excavation company and held an inflated opinion of himself always seemed to be at the center of much of the unrest.  He liked to ‘throw his weight around,’ and talked down to the other workers on the site.  He continually bragged about his thirty years’ experience and seemed to think this cemented his superiority over anyone and everyone on the building site, including buyers who frequently visited the site to watch the progress of their ‘soon to be’ new home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GUEST POST:

Falling In Love with the Main Characters

The principle characters in my mystery novel series are Hazel Davies and Anna Kohl.  They are two older women of indeterminable age who have been together for years.  They both have a deep and abiding faith in God and together live their lives quietly following their trust in God.

They spent their working lives in Seattle, Washington.  Anna’s work prior to retirement reflected her beliefs as she worked in the hospital system as a chaplain.  However, Hazel lived out in the world of commerce as an auditor for a major accounting firm. After they retired, they traveled for a while before moving back to Anna’s hometown to be closer to family, where they settled in a new home in Centerville, Ohio.

While each of them were always content with their quiet lives, events seemed to place them in the midst of unusual and certainly unexpected situations.  Their adventures led to murderous encounters across the country from Washington State to Florida and, with Murder at Serengeti Plains, back in Ohio.  They never went out looking for trouble but they seemed to stumble on innocent people in need of help.  On each occasion, they relied on their close connection with God and focused their minds only on seeking the truth.

By the time they settled in Centerville, they had assisted the police in solving several murders.  Although both Hazel and Anna were intrigued by the discovery of a murder in their own neighborhood, they intended to leave the problem to the police.  However, when Noah, one of the construction managers, came to them for help, they were compelled to utilize their unique insights and become involved.  Noah had heard about Hazel and Anna’s previous involvement in solving murders and when he found himself as the Detective’s chief suspect, he knew instinctively that they were his only hope.

Once again Hazel and Anna were on a mission to find out the truth!

Late for the Wedding

The Way Over the Hill Gang

Book Six

by M. K. Scott

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Cozy Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The Senior Sleuths don’t mind a little peace now and then, but after a long bout of nothing out of the ordinary, they’re eager for some excitement.

No one could’ve imagined it would arrive with such a bang.

A mysterious explosion has rocked the assisted living community, disrupting life for everyone.

Despite the stern warnings from authorities, one of the Senior Sleuths can’t help but get involved. This is their home, after all.

Herman, always eager to root out the truth, ignores the warnings and hunts for answers. He’s convinced the explosion was a rouse to cover up something far more sinister. But the other seniors aren’t as eager to get involved. They’re focused on Marcy and Lance’s upcoming wedding.

Without his usual sidekicks, can Herman track down the bomber and a missing veteran who no one else remembers?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
Giving his wife an uncertain glance, he erupted into an awkward jog. His long legs carried him to where a wall and the door to the administration offices used to reside. A few wires dangled from the hole in the ceiling. Blackened acoustical ceiling tile surrounded a ragged patch of blue sky. The blast carved a hole into the slab flooring. Herman pulled out his phone, snapping pictures madly, knowing any minute he’d be stopped. In one corner of the room a leather davenport sofa remained covered in broken acoustical tile, drywall chunks, and glass shards, but still in one piece. Papers littered the scene possibly from the mangled metal cabinet in the corner wadded up like a discarded note.
Interesting the davenport remained, along with a few feet of carpet, but not much else. A pair of men’s black oxfords stood next to the wall. Herman stopped taking photos and gulped. In an age where no one ever bothered to shine their shoes anymore, these had to be Ron’s. Only a former soldier who could have been dropped for push-ups during basic training for not having a shine on his shoes would care enough to keep a heavy polish on his shoes.
Shook by the possibility of what the shoes meant, Herman stood silently, reflecting that less than an hour ago he vowed to talk to the new director and maybe even find out the secret behind his scar. He audibly exhaled, knowing now he’d never discover the story.
In the background, he could hear his wife speaking. “I bet you were Mister October on last year’s calendar. You look like an autumn type of guy. Built like a maple. With that fiery hair, you’d be a red maple.”
“No, ma’am. Our department doesn’t believe in objectifying firefighters for money,” a man replied in an amused tone.
“What a pity.” Lola paused, obviously lost without the calendar as a subject. Herman centered the focus on the shoes and snapped a photo. In a way, it summed up Ron. Former serviceman, who never forgot the rules service taught him. Be prompt. Be ready. Be aware. Why hadn’t he noticed something wasn’t as it should be?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Another cooling breeze blew through the door, bringing with it the succulent scent of coconut oil, pineapple, and sea spray. His attention strayed to the door. He stiffened at the sight of the beauty leaning on the bamboo frame. The lavender haired woman pushed off the smoothed wood and sauntered, barefooted, across the sand-dusted floor. Mitch came to attention, his hand slipping away from the Sig.

She swayed to the flamenco guitar music piped through the sound system, her turquoise sundress flowing around her golden legs. Strappy silver sandals, hanging from a crooked finger, bumped against her leg as she sauntered up to the bar. She flung her sandals over her shoulder and leaned an elbow on the top.

“Holá, guapo.” Her sultry voice skirted along his spine and curled around his chest.

He gulped down a sudden feathering of desire. “Holá,” he croaked.

Her gaze flicked upward and the full force of those crystal-blue eyes hit him. She smiled.

Mitch’s stomach clenched. Those eyes. God, he could drown in them. He blinked. He knew those eyes. Had spent years trying to forget them and what they did to him every time she had looked at him. It was her? The hair color was different, but …

She shifted to peer over her sandal-bearing shoulder at the bar patrons, then brought those stunning blue eyes back to him. “What do you have that a gal like myself could quench her thirst with?”

A zap of awareness struck him. Bloody hell, she knew how to wield her words and her voice to bring about arousal.

A bejeweled hand slipped between Mitch and the woman. Manicured fingers lightly danced up her bare arm. Instead of pulling away, the lavender haired beauty turned to meet Dapper Man. She smiled seductively, setting her sandals on the bar top.

“Such a beautiful woman. What brings you to a bar like this?” Dapper Man asked in Spanish.

“It must be you.” She leaned in closer, giving Dapper Man a good view of what was hidden beneath the folds of her gauzy dress. “Looks like it’s my lucky day.”

It was a part of her job, but her shameless flirting always left a bad taste in Mitch’s mouth. He backed from his spot and reached for a bottle of sparkling water. He twisted off the cap and brought the bottle to his lips, then hesitated.

As the woman’s fingers danced up Dapper Man’s sleeve, she tilted her head to the side. Her thick hair shifted away from her neck, exposing a tiny tattoo of a yellow/red flaming bird right behind her ear lobe.

It was her! That tattoo confirmed it. The Phoenix had risen.

Movement behind Dapper Man caught Mitch’s eye. The bodyguards horseshoed their man and the other three lingered on the fringes. Hit once again with the sensation something was horribly off about these men, Mitch inched closer to his Sig.

AUTHOR BIO:

Winter Austin perpetually answers the question: “were you born in the winter?” with a flat “nope,” but believe her, there is a story behind her name.

A lifelong Mid-West gal with strong ties to the agriculture world, Winter grew up listening to the captivating stories told by relatives around a table or a campfire. As a published author, she learned her glass half-empty personality makes for a perfect suspense/thriller writer. Taking her ability to verbally spin a vivid and detailed story, Winter translated that into writing deadly romantic suspense, mysteries, and thrillers.

When she’s not slaving away at the computer, you can find Winter supporting her daughter in cattle shows, seeing her three sons off into the wide-wide world, loving on her fur babies, prodding her teacher husband, and nagging at her flock of hens to stay in the coop or the dogs will get them.

She is the author of ten novels, with more on the way.
