Good Cop Bad Cop
by Sallie Moppert

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When his mother is beaten to death by his alcoholic stepfather, fourteen-year-old Samuel Marlowe is rescued from seeking revenge against him by a chance meeting with Officer Edwin Hill. The veteran policeman takes Sam under his wing and even becomes the boy’s foster father.

Sam becomes a cop and works alongside his beloved mentor until Edwin is killed in a shooting. Hailed as a hero for his actions in the case, Sam feels like anything but. He begins a dark descent away from the stand-up policeman he once was, turning to drugs and alcohol to numb his pain and his PTSD.

The police captain assigns Sam a partner hoping to salvage what is left of him by forcing him to become a good role model for the young recruit. Needless to say, Sam is not pleased with the arrangement, protesting it up until the moment Junior Detective Dahlia Bennett enters his life.

Will he try to shake her loose? Does her by-the-book ideals and strong moral code rub off on him? Will his relaxed attitude and views on true justice start to influence her?  What will ultimately lead to the two becoming a solid team? When Dahlia declares she wants to reopen some cases believing that the wrong person was sent to prison, Sam tells her straight out that in doing so, she would be putting her life at risk. As Dahlia persists, Sam is faced with the ultimate decision: let Dahlia reopen the cases and discover his crimes, or kill her to keep her from learning the truth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
From Big Fish:
“Detectives, this is Agent Shawn Martell and Agent Florence Calvert from the FBI,” the captain introduced the man and woman seated in the visitor's chairs in front of his desk respectively. “And, agents, this is Samuel Marlowe and Dahlia Bennett, my finest detectives, as you requested.”
Sam and Dahlia exchanged handshakes with Shawn and Florence. Shawn Martell was a similar height to Sam, falling a tad under the six-foot mark. Auburn colored hair, caramel brown eyes, and an overall aesthetically pleasing appearance, Shawn looked as though he could easily portray the ‘hunky agent’ role on an FBI television drama, Dahlia considered. Christ, I’m even starting to think like Sam.
Florence could hold her own against her partner, with a long and slender frame, sleek black hair that hung down to the middle of her back and celeste blue eyes. She was taller than the average woman, nearly measuring up to Shawn, save for an inch or two. If her partner fit the hunk role, Florence appeared to be apt for the “woman in charge” role in the drama.
We're obviously not here to sightsee,” Shawn began to say.
“We're investigating a human trafficking ring,” Florence said. “And would like the assistance of the local authorities.”
“You know, Flor and I,” Shawn thumbed toward his partner. “Would stand out like a sore thumb in a small town like this.”
“Seeing some FBI agents could cause the potential perps to run like hell,” Sam said, understanding what the agents were getting at. “But two local cops poking around would be far more discreet.”
“Exactly,” Shawn said. “Could we get your assistance?”
“Absolutely,” Sam and Dahlia replied in unison.
GUEST POST:
Falling in Love with the Main Characters:
Greetings from a fellow fabulous brunette! I am honored to be here and am looking forward to sharing some fun tips with everyone that I hope can help out some of my fellow writers regarding characters and character development.
*******
       “…Edwin lay in a pool of blood resulting from several bullet wounds to the chest.  Sam grabbed Edwin’s jacket from the back of the chair and used it to help apply pressure to his wounds.  He checked the gray-haired man’s pulse and was relived to feel he still had one.
       ‘Edwin, hey,’ Sam said.  ‘It’s Sam, hey, come on, Ed, wake up.’
       There was another pop of gunfire overhead.
       ‘S-S-Sam?’  Edwin’s voice was weak and hoarse.
       Sam repeatedly blinked, trying to keep the tears at bay.
       ‘I’m here, Edwin,’ he said, one hand applying pressure to Edwin’s wounds, the other grabbing hold of the ex-cop’s hand.  ‘I’m here.  We’re going to get you out of here-‘
       Edwin shook his head in a skow, robotic movement.
       ‘Get the shooter,’ he said.  ‘Leave me here.’
       ‘I can’t leave you, Edwin.’
       Edwin gripped Sam’s arm.
       ‘Leave me, Sam,’ he repeated.  ‘Do your job!’
       ‘Edwin-‘
       ‘Fucking go, Sam!  Don’t let any kids die for me!  Do your job!  That’s an order!
*******
What is it about books and stories that keep us so enraptured? One thing that I find that will almost always snag my interest is my emotional connection to the characters. As writers, it is our job to create characters that readers have an emotional response to-whether they love the character or hate the character. If a character evokes a response from the reader, then that character is a pretty darn good one.
I started writing fan-fiction because there were some characters in a television show that I watched religiously that I got really attached to; certain episodes would inspire me to write a story in response to the ending, a scene that I would have enjoyed if it took place in the episode, or some piece of dialogue that I wanted the characters to expand on. I’ve also done it for a few video games, too.
While different authors may have different opinions on fan-fiction (some authors prefer not to have other writers use their characters and/or stories, at least not for online fan-fiction communities), I view fan-fiction as a huge compliment to the writer/creator. There was something-or someone-in my book that inspired you, the reader, to pick up a pen or plop in front of the keyboard and compose your own story.
How do you make a character so memorable? How do you get your readers to connect with your characters? Here are some things to consider when crafting characters:
~ Make your characters more believable by giving them flaws.
Perfect characters can sometimes be boring. There are definitely situations in which a perfect character might fit (think ‘conflict’ with another person) but, for the most part, they are unbelievable. No one is perfect, so why should a character be? I can relate to someone better if I can see similarities between us.
Flat or perfect characters can certainly be included in stories, but perhaps as a minor character or as a way to highlight the changes in your round or flawed character. Peter Marsden, one of Sam’s partners in my book, is an example of a flat character. He’s a nice guy with a good work ethic and is a dedicated policeman. Peter’s straight-shooter personality is used to show a change in Sam’s attitude and character after the events of the previous story, Into the Fire, which I’ll discuss more in a few paragraphs.
Instead, I want to root for the underdog or the flawed hero/heroine. I want to hate a villain so much, yet still be intrigued by his or her back story. If you’re a Star Wars fan, then a good example of this would be Kylo Ren, specifically from The Force Awakens. One of the key antagonists from The Force Awakens, Kylo Ren is reckless, hot-headed, angsty and emotionally complex. There is a reason the son of two beloved characters from the original trilogy turned to the Dark Side, but what is it? You want to hate him for all of the death and trouble he’s caused throughout the galaxy and the pinnacle of his evil actions comes in a critical scene with Han Solo (if you haven’t seen the movie, I won’t spoil it), where old and new fans alike all collectively held their breaths and/or cried. As much as the fans have disdain for Kylo Ren’s actions in this particular scene, as a writer, I find this part a goldmine. I want to hate Kylo for what he did, yet I still find myself intrigued for what the future holds for him. How will this decision impact his relationship with the other characters? Will he come to regret this decision? What enabled him to be able to do something so horrible?
I want to know more. If I was reading the book as opposed to watching the movie, I would be flipping page after page to find out what happens next with insatiable interest.
~ Make me squirm alongside the character.
Stick your character into a situation that really tests them or pushes them to the limit. If I’m connected to that character, I’ll be right in the foxhole next to them, wondering with bated breath how she or he will deal with the conflict. After the story, I may still even be thinking about what I just read, pondering how I would have dealt with the situation if I was in that character’s shoes. Choice-based video games, such as the Far Cry series, Telltale Games (the company behind games like The Wolf Among Us, The Walking Dead, etc.), the Dragon Age Series and Heavy Rain, are an excellent example of this; the player’s actions and choices throughout the game will have an impact on how the game progresses.
My character, Sam, is faced with a tremendous decision in the story, Into the Fire. During an active shooting, he is forced to decide between saving the life of someone important to him or stopping the shooter before the shooter can claim more victims - there’s an excerpt from the scene above. Either path results in death and Sam, a cop, has only moments to choose what to do. My goal was to make you feel sympathetic toward Sam-how is he supposed to decide between the two? Your heart breaks for him because this monumental decision is made even harder because of Sam’s (and your) connection to Edwin, the man who played a huge role in Sam’s life. Does he let his job get in the way of saving the man who was like his father or does he save Edwin and risk the shooter killing more people? It can make you wonder, how would I react if I was in Sam’s position? It’s a non-win situation regardless of what he chooses, which makes the decision that much more impactful throughout the rest of the story.
The moment I knew that I nailed it was when I was at work and one of my coworkers who was reading my book at the time came up to my desk and looked at me with a frown and said “you killed Edwin!” (To be fair, Edwin’s fate was always destined to be what it was in Into the Fire - he was originally a character in a side project and evolved into the Edwin from GCBC when I was working on creating Sam’s mentor and borrowed him from the other story, but I digress ^_^)
Who are some characters that you love or just love to hate?
GENRE: Fantasy, Action/Adventure
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Tucker Littlefield is a liar, a thief, a con-man. In an attempt to take advantage of a party thrown by the King, he becomes involved in a kidnapping – the King’s niece, Elizabeth, to be exact. Because of his fear of the dark as well as heights, and a good many other things, he finds himself stabbed and bleeding to death. To save him, a Shaman for the Jonda – Daneba – turns him into a soul bearer for the Kindred. In an effort to find Lizie, Littlefield finds the Norha instead and their leader Tahki - a cannibalistic tribe the lives under a volcano that will leave no stone unturned to find Lizie. Littlefield is blackmailed into her recovery. Will the help of his companion, Enon, help them save Lizie...and themselves?

"Transformed by a primitive magic beyond a civilized man's understanding, I was given a horrible gift that no man should possess... It held me, twisted me, turning me at its bidding. I was enslaved by its power, compelled to devour the souls of the dead until I became the monster of my fears. I have seen things I wish never to see again. I have done things of which I wish never to speak. Yet I must if I am to find the answers to fulfill my hope. I have walked upon blue ribbons of molten stone to peer into the depth of a man's soul. I watched as a promise made at birth brought my friend Enon to sacrifice everything to become whole again - all in an effort to save the life of his child. I have cried without shame for the loss of all I hold dear and for fear that the future will hold more than I can bear. I am Tucker Littlefield. Know all that I say now is true-spoken."

EXCERPT THREE:

The wind howled louder as the clouds darkened, deeper and deeper. Lightning flashed wildly overhead, coming closer with each new strike. Thunder roared, crushing the air, pushing me down tightly to the ground. The fire strained to its limits, jumping to me and then suddenly to Enon’s heart and that of the dog. Both screamed in agony, as did I. The howl of that wind shrieked louder, drowning out the others. Pain racked every inch of my body.

I was overwhelmed with all that was taking place about me and then she did the unthinkable. She summoned from each, a wisp of themselves, their spirits, their souls, tore free from them to enter me through the hole in my palm.

A stir of Enon’s mind filled me, for a moment, a rush of memories and images not my own. For that instant I was engulfed with anguish, a loneliness that reached far beyond my own. The images of his life raced by in torrents, every pain, every rejection from his people as well as mine.

I was overwhelmed, filled with the images of every soul he had seen into. Every life, every lie, every deceit, every ugly thing man and Jonda alike had tried to hide from him. Even my own. He was an outcast in both societies, befriended by none and yet his sorrow was for them all.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is filled with action, adventure, intrigue, mystery, suspense, and a dash of romance!

This book focuses on the kidnapping of the King’s niece, Elizabeth, often also referred to as “Lizie,” and “Izie,” in the book.  Enon Tutelo, a Jonda, and Tucker Littlefield, were both guests at the Palace during the birthday party when seven-year-old Elizabeth was taken.  Jonda are like giants and are considered to be outsiders and monsters.  Enon and his magical dog, Noget, were protecting the Royal Family when a group of Jonda’s had actually crashed the birthday party, beat up and slayed guards, and had made their way towards the Royal Family.  Tucker had tried to help and intervene with protecting Lizie, but he was beaten and left unconscious.  When he comes to, he learns of the tragic news that the Jonda’s kidnapped Lizie and used her as a human shield to escape.  Also, that the King’s right hand, Chancellor Grimwell has convinced the King that ALL the Jonda are responsible, including Enon, who protected the King and his family.  The King gave Chancellor Grimwell full responsibility to do as he pleases in order to get Lizie back.  Therefore, he has enacted that all Jonda are to be arrested or killed on sight if they resist until Lizie is returned home safely.

Tucker is blackmailed into finding Lizie by Lizie’s nanny, Governess Eloise.  She promises Tucker that if he brings Elizabeth home safely, he will never have to work another day in his life.  Tucker is given the King’s personal horse, Escalan.  He is also given a letter that states he on King’s business and is to have an open-ended supply of money and authority and to be treated in this high regard.  Tucker heads to Bridgehaven where he is to meet up with Enon and start on a very dangerous adventure to find and rescue Lizie.  While on the search they come across many threatening and menacing creatures that try to stop Tucker and Enon from saving Lizie.

There are a few plot twists and a surprising traitor involved in Elizabeth’s kidnapping – a shocking betrayer that even I didn’t see coming!  So much excitement that you definitely don’t want to miss out on!

This book has a creative storyline, a detailed writing style, interesting characters, is fast paced, and keeps you entertained.

I think most people will have a love/hate relationship with the main character, Tucker.  I think they will find him off-putting, pompous, and arrogant at first.  Tucker is a thief, a cheat, a coward, a liar, and a con-man.  But as you spend more time with him and get to know him better, I think he’ll slowly start to win you over.  I am curious to see if that attitude will continue over the course of the other books in the series or if he’ll go back to his old ways.  As far as Enon goes, he is kind, caring, and protective.  However, even though an adult his language skills are more like a young, uneducated child.  It was occasionally annoying reading his broken-up sentences that were more like a bunch of childish words randomly thrown together.  I also enjoyed the supporting characters as each one brought something unique to the story.

There is a lot going on in this book and surprisingly it’s only 120 pages via eBook!  Unfortunately, the amount of content was so jam-packed and overloaded that it had to quickly jump from scene-to-scene in order to make room for everything to fit.  This made for some scenes to seem choppy and not fully developed, like they were quickly rushed through so that the next scene could take place.  However, with this book having so much detail it also didn’t allow for much lag time or for the reader to have a chance to find a slow-paced scene as the book just kept going from big moment to the next big moment without catching a breath in-between.

Unfortunately, I think that the worldbuilding wasn’t as strong and powerful as it needed to be.  I think this was mostly because the book was on the shorter end and everything seemed rushed.  There was barely any time for the storyline, plot points, character development, character arc, etc., let alone time for creating a setting and worldbuilding.  At 120 pages there just wasn’t enough space to do the worldbuilding justice.  I think what the author started building definitely held promise and showed skills that he held the talent and capabilities of generating such designs if given enough pages to follow through.

This book genre is marketed as a fantasy, action/adventure book and yet the author found a way to throw in mystery, intrigue, suspense, and romance elements into the book.  It definitely added a fascinating extra component to the story!

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!

This book is book one of The Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield Book Series.  This book can absolutely be read as a standalone.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!  I think all fantasy, action, and adventure readers will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!

AUTHOR BIO:

I was raised pretty much the same as everyone else... devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends I could conjure.

The first thing I can remember writing was for my wife. For the life of me I can't remember what it was about... something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married me shortly after that. I spent a good number of years chasing other dreams before I got back to writing.

It wasn't a deliberate conscious thought it was more of a stepping stone. It was the eighties, my wife and I had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. "Be as detailed as you can," we were told.

I was thrilled. If there is one thing I enjoy it's making people believe me and I like to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mine you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn't be sure if it were true or not. When I write, I always write with the effort of "it could happen quirkiness" very much in mind and nothing, I guarantee you, nothing makes me happier.

Of Sound Mind and Someone Else's Body
by William Quincy Belle

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Science Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Science Fiction with (gasp) sex!

Alan Maitland is a successful businessman on his way up the corporate ladder. Life is good, but life is also full of the unexpected. A scientific experiment goes awry, and Alan’s mind is transferred to the body of Hana Toussaint, a high-class escort. Suddenly, he must not only contend with a new identity, but with the eye-opening experience of living as a female: how to walk in high heels without falling; how to put on a bra without dislocating a shoulder; how to deal with makeup without poking out an eye; and how to get along in a society which in many ways is still male-dominated.

When Alan discovers that Hana has taken over his body, the two of them must work together to find the scientist who can reverse the experiment and give them back their respective lives. Along the way, they must cope with living as each other and learn what it's like to be a member of the opposite sex. And as their adventure goes on, Alan the woman must figure out his growing feelings for Hana the man.

Alan faces the biggest challenge of his life which Hana sums up with one decisive question:

“Are you man enough to be a woman?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Alan stepped out of the hotel onto the still-busy street. The night air cooled his flushed skin. He took a deep breath and looked around. It was in a nondescript city neighborhood made up of multi-story buildings with commercial fronts. He didn’t recognize anything. Where am I?
He checked Hana’s phone for GPS or a map, but the display showed Enter your password. He had to find somebody to give him directions.
Spotting the illuminated sign of a convenience store, he headed down the street. In the light of the store window, he fished out the wallet and scanned the driver’s license again.
A man walked by, and Alan called out, “Hey, buddy!”
The man continued until he looked at him and stopped. “Hey, baby. What are you doing out so late? As if I need to ask.”
“Do you know where Charlton Street is?”
“If you invite me over, I may be able to help you.” The man grinned.
Alan frowned. What the hell had gotten into this guy? “Charlton Street. Tell me where Charlton Street is.”
The man ambled over and stood close. “Come on, sugar. How about being nice to a guy?” He reeked of alcohol.
“Oh, Christ,” Alan said. He stomped into the store. Behind the counter, a teenage boy flipped through a magazine. “Do you know where Charlton Street is?” Alan asked.
The boy raised his head and stared mesmerized. Alan snapped his fingers in front of the boy’s eyes. “Hey, you there. Where’s Charlton Street?”
The boy stammered, “This is Varick. Go out the door, turn right, and go down five blocks.” He stretched out his arm to point.
“Where’s East Seventy-Eighth Street?”
“That’s the Upper East Side. It’s miles from here.”
“Thanks.”
Alan started for the door, then stopped and gaped at the hand he had used to snap at the boy. He curled his fingers, then splayed them, looking at the long fingernails lacquered in bright red with little blue stars by the cuticles. He assumed the nails were fake, but he couldn’t tell. Then a surprising thought came to him: They were his fingernails.
He glanced up and saw a security mirror over the door. The teenage boy leaned over the counter to stare at his backside. He looked down. The skirt he wore was short, so he showed a lot of leg. No wonder the boy was checking him out. Checking him out? If he knew the truth, he would run for the hills. This was pushing cross-dressing to the limit.
AUTHOR BIO:
William Quincy Belle is just a guy. Nobody famous; nobody rich; just some guy who likes to periodically add his two cents worth with the hope, accounting for inflation, that $0.02 is not over evaluating his contribution. He claims that at the heart of the writing process is some sort of (psychotic) urge to put it down on paper and likes to recite the following, which so far he hasn't been able to attribute to anyone: "A writer is an egomaniac with low self-esteem." You will find Mr. Belle's unbridled stream of consciousness floating around in cyberspace.
