EXCERPT THREE:

Grabbing a second piece of pizza and again settling into the comfortable chair Mason answered, "I'm not bi-polar I'm just a temperamental geni—" the pizza fell from Mason's hand to the paper plate.

Nick felt movement and thought Aphrodite was going after the food again but when he moved his hand to shoo her away Mason grabbed his wrist to stop him. His eyes shifted upward to meet Mason's gaze and saw him raise a finger to his lips before he pointed to the bed. Nick looked down to see it wasn't Aphrodite moving on the bed it was Hannah's fingers and they were going for the pizza sitting on the flat of his stomach. Nick's mouth opened and Mason's grip tightened to silence him. Both of them sat frozen watching Hannah's slow hand make its way toward the cooling slice of cheese and pepperoni. In their current positions only Mason could see Hannah's face, her eyes looked a little clearer but her expression was still blank until her fingertips touched upon a slightly burnt slice of pepperoni.

Hannah snatched the pepperoni from the top of the pizza along with a gooey strand of melted mozzarella and popped it into her mouth like a thief in the night making off with someone's family jewels. A splash of tomato sauce burst off it as she chomped down nearly biting her fingertip. It stuck on the corner of her mouth with a strand of cheese clinging to it.

Even though he was slightly awestruck, Mason had enough experience with family members to anticipate Jackson's next move even before he thought of making it. He wrestled the man's arm to the mattress to keep him from jumping up and shouting out something that would startle her. "Not a sound," Mason whispered. "Don't move."

The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson
by MH Snowy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Science fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Hidden inside the most unlikely person can be the most extraordinary hero…

Jeremy Sunson is surrounded by crazy. Mrs. Abercrombie, upstairs, is widowed because her husband glued feathers to his arms, jumped off the building and tried to fly. His neighbour, Stuart, has gone mad since his wife died in a freak car accident— his only thread to reality the doomsday machine he’s building and his daughter… and, of course, there’s spacemen in Jeremy’s living room.

Every night, in glorious Technicolor, there’s a battle royal between two high tech assassins who continually blast Jeremy’s apartment to shreds. Each man has one mission: Red wants to kill Jeremy, Blue wants to save him!

Though his therapist insists he’s just having bad dreams—Jeremy knows better. It’s time to fight. He’s sick and tired of being sick, scared and tired! Armed with rare confidence and a baseball bat, this night, Jeremy fights like the crazy man he isn’t!

But how can he ever imagine when he’s won the battle, the war is only just beginning… over and over and over again?

The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson – ride a wave of laughter, fun and sci-fi fantasy all the way to Armageddon!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
Jeremy practiced for the rest of the day. He swung the baseball bat with vigour, ducked out of the way and weaved behind the furniture. Even pulled out an unused pair of sneakers after he stubbed his toe on the couch and hopped around howling in pain. Jeremy discovered that kicks were much more effective using the heel instead of the toe, and especially so when you didn't wear slippers. He certainly taught that couch a lesson!
After his foot became stuck in the couch with a well-placed heel strike, he decided he needed something a little less expensive and more durable to use as an enemy. Jeremy propped a mattress against the wall and used it for target practice with the bat, only missing once or twice. After several hours non-stop practice when he'd swung, kicked, rolled and shouted like never before, Mrs Abercrombie knocked on the door and asked if everything was all right.
"Fine, thank you, Mrs Abercrombie." Jeremy wiped his cheeks, certain the unaccustomed moisture more than just tears, though his shin still ached from where the mattress repulsed a furious attack from the bat a moment ago. "I'm just trying to prepare. You know, get in shape."
Mrs Abercrombie didn't seem to know, but she nodded with that patient gleam in her eye when she talked of her late husband—who woke that last day after eighty-two years deciding he could fly. Jeremy didn't know why she gave him that look now: he had no intention of gluing feathers to his arms and finding, after he jumped off a six storey building, that he could not in fact fly. But Mrs Abercrombie nodded with a sad smile once more, asked him to keep the shouting to a minimum, and let him know she would be upstairs if he needed anyone to talk to.
GUEST POST:
Why so serious?
I'm in the middle of reading one of my favourite YA fantasies. Again. I'll do that sometimes. And every time I do it, I'm reminded why they are my favourites. Yes, they have surprise twists, action and suspense—but, after re-reading once or twice, I remember all of that. Even the best plot couldn't hold enough interest to be read for the umpteenth time. So why do I read these stories so many times? First, there's no grittiness that I have to look past. No characters that are offensive. And a distinct lack of subversive themes that the author is attempting to jam down my throat. But none of that is the most important. This is: Fun. The stories that become my favourites are full of fun and laughter. Yes, the hero suffers and struggles to survive verbal slings and arrows, not to mention death itself. But, in between, moments of happiness and humour sparkle; predicaments that make me cackle or even laugh out loud.
These books remind me why I want to write: with nothing more than a pen, I can bring joy to a reader. And the first reader is always me. Because of this, while I may not write for myself, I always write what I enjoy. Jeremy, in The 12 Nights of Jeremy Sunson, the most unlikely hero, struggles with life itself, not to mention assassins and Armageddon. Montague the magician-trickster might be a tad sarcastic, but can't help having fun in his search for the truth that is In Harm's Way. Life can be hard. We don't have to take it. Laugh at the world—laugh at your troubles—and the world is an easier place to survive. A better place. So pick up your favourite, or let Jeremy and Montague help you settle back and have fun. You'll find yourself wondering how you can ever be so serious!
When a Marquis Chooses a Bride
by Ella Quinn
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Thanks to their large extended family and unconventional courtship, the Worthingtons have seen their share of scandal and excitement. But nothing has prepared them for this...
The Dowager Lady Worthington isn’t quite sure what to make of country-girl Dorothea Stern. As the granddaughter of the Duke of Bristol, Dotty is schooled in the ways and means of the nobility. But her sharp wit and outspoken nature has everyone in a tizzy. Especially their cousin, Dominic, the Marquis of Merton.
Prematurely stuffy, Dom was raised by his cheerless uncle to be wary of a host of things, including innovation, waltzing, and most perilous of all: true love. Still, there’s something about Dotty, beyond her beauty, that Dom cannot resist. But the odds are against him if he intends to win her as his bride. Will he choose loyalty to his family—or risk everything for the one woman he believes is his perfect match…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

“Kimbal,” Dom called to his valet.

“Yes, my lord.”

“I shall be dining at White’s.”

“Yes, my lord.”

Dom scribbled a note to his friend Viscount Fotherby asking if he would like to join Dom for dinner. By the time he was dressed and had donned his hat, Fotherby’s answer affirming the invitation had arrived.

A short while later, just as a light sprinkle turned into a persistent rain, Dom handed his hat and cane to the footman at White’s and found his friend lounging in the room that held the club’s famous betting book. William Alvanley, another of Dom’s friends, was seated next to the window with another man staring intently at the rain.

He turned to Fotherby. “What are they doing?”

“Five thousand quid on which raindrop will reach the bottom of the sill first.”

Despite being close with many of the Prince Regent’s circle, Dom could not abide the excessive wagers his friends made. Alvanley would end up ruining himself and his estates at the rate he was going. “Are you ready to dine, or are you waiting the outcome?”

“Famished.” Fotherby tossed off his glass of wine. “Thought you weren’t coming to Town this year.”

“My plans changed.” Dom and Fotherby entered the dining room. “I have decided to take a wife.”

“Wife?” Fotherby choked. “Any idea who?”

“Not yet, but I have a list of qualifications. She must be well-bred, not given to fits of temper or strange starts, quiet, biddable, easy to look at—I must get an heir on her after all—know what is expected of a marchioness. And not prone to scandals. You know how my uncle hated them. I think that about covers it.”

“A paragon, in other words.”

Dom gave a cut nod. “Indeed. I could wed no one less.”

The Dragon's Staircase by McKenna Grey & Everly Archard - Virtual Book Tour - Interview - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

The Dragon's Staircase
by McKenna Grey & Everly Archard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

FBI Agent Alexa Kyndall devoted eight years of her life to the search for justice, showing no mercy to the guilty and depraved. When she joins a special task force to bring down a serial killer, Alexa encounters the most unexpected criminal of her career.

When a child witnesses a brutal slaying, Alexa’s life becomes intertwined with Craig Pierson’s, a man with his own haunting past. They join forces, only to discover they must put everything on the line in a pulse-pounding struggle to protect and survive.

Nestled in a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, The Dragon’s Staircase is an intriguing, nonstop adventure that will keep readers enthralled from start to finish.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
For ten long seconds, Alexa didn’t move. Her body rooted at the foot of the bed, as the breath in her throat stilled and her knees faltered. The innocuous object rested only a few feet in front of her. A manila envelope that on any other day, in any other circumstance, would’ve been overlooked. In spite of the scattered darkness, she recognized the handwriting. Her pulse raced as a single face flashed to the forefront of her mind. A face she could never forget.
Julian Frederick.
If she were anyone else, the need to hyperventilate would have been dire, but her FBI training still reigned strong inside of her. It forced out an automatic command to slow her heartbeat and steady her breath. Panic was a natural reaction to stress. A reaction she’d learned to overcome through practice and experience. Slowly, her body obeyed and her mind cleared from the terror-induced daze. Right now, emotional distance was key. It offered her the detachment she needed to remain sharp.
This wasn’t her bedroom. It was a crime scene. Her crime scene.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW WITH MCKENNA:

What do you think about when you are alone in your car?
I talk so myself. :) Actually, I don’t drive all that much because I work from home. But when I go on a road trip or take a drive to somewhere in nature, often I’ll have soft music playing and will work through whatever story I’m currently writing. I might act out a scene, playing both parts, seeing what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes I’ll be the writer/observer watching my characters act out their scenes. I can really get into it, too. Once I started crying during a particularly emotional scene, but it really helps. But most of the time, I listen to audiobooks.

What type of hero do you like best?
Tall, dark, and handsome always works for me, but that’s just surface stuff. I like a hero who is flawed. He’ll be the big, strong, knight-in-shining-armor, but he’ll also have his own weaknesses and vulnerabilities. He has a strong moral compass, but is willing to toss it out the window (not too far) when the choice is between protecting someone he loves and possibly losing that someone.

If you could be any character from literature, who would it be?
Elizabeth Bennett. Goodness, I know I’m not alone here, but come on. She has a quick mind, she’s witty (not silly), and she gets to marry Mr. Darcy. It’s a no-brainer.

What appeals to you most about your chosen genre?
I love great romance and I enjoy suspense-filled adventure. Combining them makes sense, and in the case of romantic suspense (when done right), there’s this nice balance of the two. We get some romance, some tender moments, and then BAM, we don’t know what hit us. I like the ups and downs, the not knowing, and then at the end, the sudden release of calm when you know everything is going to be okay.

What has been your greatest pleasure in writing The Dragon’s Staircase?
Aside from the exciting roller-coaster of romance and suspense of writing the book, I really enjoyed collaborating with my co-author, Everly Archard. When our mutual editor recommended Everly, I had no idea my experimentation into co-writing would be so much fun. I write other books under another pseudonym, so sharing the responsibility of writing this series leaves me time to continue working on my other books. And, did I mention all the fun?

What are you working on right now?
Everly and I are well into the second book in the KYNDALL FAMILY THRILLERS, Shadow of the Forgotten. We’re also working on a joint short story collection for Christmas, and plotting out the other books in this series. We’re keeping busy!
