I was just your typical Starbucks barista without an interesting bone in my body. I liked to keep my head down and do my best to cruise through life uninterrupted, although my bright red hair made it almost impossible. Things took an interesting turn when I met Jimmy, an artist from the tattoo parlour down the street. Living and working in Hollywood, California, I met a lot of intriguing characters, but no one as intriguing as him. He brought a new light to my life that I didn't know I had, let alone one that I needed.

My past wasn't a great one, but I got out and made a new life for myself. And now, it felt like my future was looking better with Jimmy in it. I felt like life was finally worth living, until... everywhere you looked, something was on fire. The screaming was enough to make you go deaf and the scent of blood made you gag. My body was screaming in pain and I couldn't stop choking on all the smoke in the air. My lungs felt tight, and when I looked up, I couldn't decide if it was snowing or raining ashes. People were firing guns chaotically and I had never run so fast in my entire life. Jimmy jumped up to the roof of a parked car and I was quick to follow, bending over to catch my breath.

"Now where?" I panted.

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

“Hey, I’m glad you came out tonight,” he said and I smiled in return, my cheeks aching.

“I am too,” I admitted with a bit of a laugh.

“Yeah, like, lookit you! Facing your fears and everything! Ordering drinks all on your own—” He gestured to my drink sitting on the bar. “Talking to hookers . . .” he trailed off, before turning around and making his way back to the dance floor.

I felt the colour leave my face and my mouth slowly gawked open. “Hooker!?” I yelled.

He laughed while he danced with Nils. I remained standing where I was, thinking about the night. She didn’t look like a hooker. But mind you . . . what do hookers look like? Did it really matter? Laughing at myself, I sighed and shook my head. This was the most human interaction I had in a while, not including work, and I was actually enjoying myself. A lot, smiling by myself like a moron. I was on an emotional roller coaster and I was the only passenger, sitting front row. I was losing my shit, but I was okay with it. Nils saw me and motioned for me to join them, so I finished my drink and ran over. I wasn’t drunk . . . I thought. I had never been drunk before, but the alcohol definitely got rid of some of the nerves, and I was never one to dance . . . but here I was . . . facing my fears, just like Jimmy had said.

Our night ended around 3:00 a.m. when Jack had had enough, and we decided to call it quits. Jimmy and Caleb carried him out while the rest of us walked behind.

“Tonight was a lot of fun. We should a hundred percent do it again,” Nils said, drunkenly walking beside me with her arm over my shoulder.

I couldn’t stop giggling which only made her laugh harder. My head felt slightly fuzzy, but it was nothing to be concerned about. This was my first time consuming alcohol and I knew I was in good hands.

We got back to the tattoo parlour where everyone went their separate ways except for Jack, Nils, Jimmy and me.

“I’ll get a cab with him,” Nils mumbled, grabbing a cigarette, lighting it, and then taking a huge drag from it.

“You sure?” Jimmy asked. “Yeah. There’s no way he can find his place alone. That’s a lot of alone elevator time,” she laughed, taking out her cell phone and calling a cab. “You guys go. I’m good. I’ll stay at his place,” she smiled and Jimmy nodded.

“Cool. I’ll see you later then. Bye, Jacky,” he said, patting Jack on the back and then turning to me.

“C’mon. I’ll walk ya home,” he smiled, motioning onward and grabbing a cigarette out for himself.
