If you love laugh-out-loud mysteries, witty heroines, and a touch of the paranormal, you’ll love Damsel in a Dress, book 5 in the Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum series of novels. Read this twisty cozy mystery today!

Read an Excerpt:

Harper pointed and brushed her long, dark hair off her shoulder.

A slender woman, eyes open and sightless, lay on her back beneath an owl box. A pool of blood had formed around her head in the soft earth. Beside her, a chihuahua barked at us hysterically.

Bile rose in my throat. I pressed the back of my hand to my mouth. I thought I’d been prepared. But nothing can really prepare you for sudden death.

“Do you think she tripped and fell?” Harper said, pointing to the rock half-hidden beneath Bernadette’s spill of hair.

“Maybe,” I croaked, my mouth dry. Bruises darkened the skin above the collar of her cocktail dress, and there was a reddish mark on her face. They didn’t look like they’d come from a fall. “Did you call the police?”

“Of course I did. They’ll be here any minute. I just…” She pressed her hands to her stomach. “It’s Bernadette, one of Adele’s oldest friends, her bridesmaid.”

Lead weighted my gut. This was awful. Worse than awful. How were we going to tell Adele?

Magical Beasts Book Series

by Geoffrey Saign

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Samantha and Jake fight to save their poisoned parents, and instead find themselves in a battle to save the parallel magical world of KiraKu. The two teens discover they must defeat the Evil One—a diabolical master of deception—or their own world will fall too. Samantha must master the mysterious supernatural staff, WhipEye, and find out if she has what it takes to fulfill the prophecy of the true guardian. In a final battle, reminiscent of Lord of the Rings, the two teens will have to risk everything, or lose it all. For Fans of Fantastic Beasts, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, The Hobbit, and Lord of the Rings.

Winner Outstanding YA Fiction IAN BOTY

~Magical Beasts is now in development for a major motion picture~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
“Watch out, Sam!” yells Jake.
I fling myself sideways onto the grass, pulling WhipEye out of reach of the lizard’s snapping jaws. The beast keeps going, leaping up.
Tarath springs vertically after it, but the Komodo’s flapping wings lift it fifty feet in one beat, inches beyond the caracal’s swinging claws. Tarath falls back to the ground, landing silently on the grass. She snarls up at the Komodo.
Hissing, the lizard hovers above us. His eyes bore into mine. “If you want to save your elders, bring the staff to Gorgon. Today. Alone. Or they die.” Shifting his gaze to Tarath, he says, “We’ll meet again, Great One.”
Tarath yowls while the Komodo quickly flies away, giving a faint roar before it fades in the distance.
“Mom.” Jake rests his hand on his mother’s shoulder. She appears unconscious.
Scrambling over the lawn to Dad, I press trembling fingers against his neck. He has a pulse. Jagged cuts on his thighs have darkened his jeans with blood. The same ugly slashes mark Cynthia’s legs. The wounds appear serious enough for stitches, but not life-threatening. In fact, when I examine Dad’s cuts closer, they’ve already stopped bleeding. Komodo bites can be deadly due to venom, but I’m not sure about claw wounds.
Jake looks bewildered. “Why didn’t you give the staff to the Komodo, Sam?”
My throat thickens. “I couldn’t.” It sounds lame, even to me. With one decision everything in my life is in shambles. And I have no one to blame but myself.
Tarath surprises me when she shrinks to five feet tall while padding toward us. Lowering her head between our parents, she sniffs the air. “Poison,” she spits.
GUEST POST:
Fierce Female Lead Characters: How to Create Strong Role Models in Books
I have 4 series—2 thrillers, 2 YA Fantasy—that are all in development for a major motion picture. And in all 4 series, the women can kick butt. In the thrillers, a woman is paired with the lead male character, and often saves their butt—a reverse damsel in distress. In the YA fantasy series, young women are the lead characters. And while the male characters are strong too, the women carry the story.
It’s important that girls see that female characters of any age can be strong, smart, and wise. But they also have to be real, otherwise you’re looking at a James Bond type of character, which is really more of a stereotype or caricature than a real person.
In Magical Beasts, seventeen-year-old Samantha (Sam) Green is a wildlife expert. She also has unique relationships to a supernatural staff and to magical creatures. However, she’s a klutz at first (ninja dragons eventually train her how to fight) and isn’t always sure of herself. But she is fiercely on the side of doing what is right, even if it costs her her father’s life. She follows her gut and has a sense of humor. Usually kind, with empathy, she can also be tough and sarcastic. Smart, she knows almost everything there is to know about wild animals, including their scientific names. But because of her passion and wonder regarding all things living, she tends to be too trusting and perhaps a little naïve at times. She gets wiser as the series progresses. A lot of her character is shown by her reactions and dialogue with the main male character. He is more wary, less trusting, and sticks to facts. It makes Sam’s character traits stand out even more.
Sam goes through trauma—she lost her mother, who saved her life from a hit-and-run driver—and she’s on the verge of losing her father in book 1. This makes her choices to do what is right even harder, because she’s forced to choose between saving a magical world or her father. She shows emotion, cries, and asks for help. But this is also wisdom and revealing her heart, versus ‘a crying weak woman.’ In other words, Sam goes through a wide range of emotions, ups and downs, all of which make her feel like a real person. In one scene, where they are headed to the Amazon, while being chased by the Army, she insists on feeding her father’s animals before they leave, because she knows no one else will be around to care for them. She begins to have control over other animals, but she also doesn’t want them to be hurt by her demands.
Like any other teenager, Sam experiences frustration and confusion over her relationship with Jake, the main male character. In book 2, Sam thinks Jake is going to leave her. She jumps to conclusions, like an impulsive teenager, and then finds out she’s wrong, and feels a bit silly about it. She has a compass her mother gave her, that helps guide her. When she levels it, the needle will move to the direction she should take. And at East, North, West, & South are inscribed the words, Trust Love Trust Mom—which kind of become her mantra throughout the books. If your character shows emotion and strength, along with vulnerability and kindness, she becomes relatable to the reader. Real characters become lovable.
The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender
by WS Carmichael
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Romance/Romantic Comedy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Ava Moreland has it all planned out. In two months, she will marry her fiancé, Tim. She’ll continue working at Vegas’s famous Cosmopolitan bar while he runs his father’s accounting firm. Soon they’ll start a family and she’ll have the white picket life she’s always dreamed of.
Or not.
When her fairytale engagement implodes in a devastating display, Ava embarks on a quest to reclaim her identity and feminine prowess – by sleeping her way through Las Vegas. With her best friend, Jarrod, acting as wingman her plan is foolproof.
Or not.
Nothing goes as planned with hilariously disastrous results. Her sexual misadventures will keep you in stitches as Ava searches for herself in Sin City, finding herself and her happily ever after in the unlikeliest of places.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

The problem with a dramatic exit is what comes next. They never show you that part in the movies. You never see the tough heroine stumbling down a hotel hallway, her feet tired from traveling all day, alone and confused in a strange city, holding back tears as the realization her life has been flipped upside down settles in.

No. They never show you that part. They fade to black and pick up two years down the line when she’s found her happily ever after.

Where the hell is that fade to black button? Because this is the part I want to skip. I want to skip the binge eating and the ugly crying. I want to skip the ‘why me’ phase. I want to skip the explanations to my friends when they ask what happened. I want to skip all of it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GUEST POST:
When I think of a hero, I think of the alpha male coming to save the day as he swoops in on his white horse, rescuing the damsel in distress. So, when I’m asked to describe the hero of The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender, my instinct is to reason there is no hero.
Hmmm…that’s impossible. How can any book, especially a love story, not have a hero? The lead male character must be the hero. That’s just the way of things, right?
Wrong.
I like to think my writing is a fresh take on the romance genre. We all read romance novels because we love the HEA and of course, the romance. But who says romance novels must be formulaic? Personally, I find it boring to read the same romance again and again with only slight tweaks to the characters and storylines. With that in mind, I try to check all the boxes that make a romance a romance while keeping the reader engaged with entertaining characters.
It is in this spirit I would assert there are two heroes in The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender.
The first, and my favorite character, is Jarrod. Jarrod is Ava’s best friend and confidant. He is an out and proud, flamboyant, hell of a good time. When writing Jarrod’s character, I was careful to avoid painting him as the insulting, overdone, stereotypical homosexual man Hollywood loves to shove in our faces. He is animated, but I wanted the reader to see his depth also. He is Ava’s balance when she needs it, her fierce protector and the first one in line to tell her when she’s being an asshole. There are many scenes where Jarrod’s softer side is evident. After a night out drinking, he helps Ava to bed, even taking the time to remove her makeup for her. When her engagement crumbles, he picks her up and carries her through the roughest time without letting her lose herself in an abyss of self-pity. Despite her assertions of being a strong, independent woman, Ava almost lets her chance at happiness pass her by because she’s afraid to be hurt again. Jarrod is there every step of the way, forcing her to take a hard look at her motivations and goals while giving her the support and space she needs. If there was ever a hero of a best friend, it is Jarrod Jeffries.
Now that I’ve made it seem Ava needs Jarrod to save her from herself, I’ll contradict myself by declaring Ava the second hero in Misadventures. If there is one cliché I can’t stand, it is the helpless woman. None, I repeat, none of my female leads are helpless and Ava is no exception. She’s just like the rest of us. She’s imperfect. She makes choices she later regrets. She can be impulsive, and she sometimes lets her mouth get away from her. She allowed herself to be molded into someone else’s idea of who she should be because she thought love required that type of sacrifice. In the end, though, it is Ava who must decide who she is and how she wants to live her life. Jarrod can support and guide her, but Ava must make the tough decisions on her own. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own lives and Ava is no different. Regardless of the obstacles and opportunities in front of her, if she doesn’t go after what she wants, she’ll never find her HEA. Sometimes, the only hero we truly need is ourselves.
Thank you for taking the time to read about Jarrod and Ava. Please follow my blog at www.WSCarmichael.com.
AUTHOR BIO & LINKS:
WS Carmichael is attempting to write the world into romantic bliss one novel at a time. Based in upstate NY, she travels as often as her hectic schedule will allow. When she isn’t busy writing, she’s a mother, nurse and avid sportswoman.
WS Carmichael fell in love with romance at an early age when she would sneak Harlequins from her mother. A voracious reader, she eventually made the jump to writing.
Writing is her passion and she’s always jotting down new storyline and character ideas. Often, her characters take on a life of their own and don’t always cooperate with her plan for them. Creating well developed, strong alpha male characters that don’t fit into the typical romance hero mold makes her novels exciting and relatable. A woman who believes whole heartedly in happily ever after, she gives her heroes the heroine they deserve.
Dragon Queen
by Rod Marsden
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Futuristic Science Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Mixing with your betters can get you killed. Dragons know this as does a certain maverick pilot and his researcher wife. It is possible to get thrown into events not of your own making in which you must do your best to survive. Meanwhile, somewhere not far from mainland Tasmania, there is an island named Green Maiden’s Folly. What’s it like? Is it paradise, or has it been made over into a worse destination hellhole than Devil’s Island used to be like in the 19th and 20th Centuries? On Green Maiden’s Folly, the destiny of the dragon is revealed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Elanora’s black scales shone in the early morning light. She smiled at the effect the sun had on her spiked tail and also her legs, arms, and claws. The sun came up over the silvery sea. It was always a welcome sight, the start of a new day on her island. In the distance, waves rose and crashed before they could get to shore. A breeze touched her all too human nose, lips, and ears. It should have been unpleasant, but it wasn’t. She found the smell of salt in the air invigorating.

Lizards were bothered by the cold, but despite her lacertilian features, Elanora wasn’t a reptile. She was a dragon, and regardless of the plume of white coming from her mouth, she wasn’t shivering. In fact, she preferred a cool climate. She looked around for company because it was the loneliness that got to her, not the near frozen air.

She picked up a stick and drew a rectangle in the sand. A small blackish-grey crab came out of the rolling surf, and with its eyes on stalks, looked up at her. “These are the dragons,” she told the creature. “They are on the bottom. That’s not a good place to be. They’re mutants like me, but I’m special because I’m a female, and I’m not supposed to exist.”

Reel to Reel – Movie Mistakes from Hollywood's Favorite Films

by Isla Grey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Lights, Camera, Action! From the very beginning, the world of cinema has captivated us. We have found ourselves laughing at our favorite comedies, crying when love finally comes to fruition, being beamed to other worlds or battling in the midst of action sequences. While movies might be the perfect entertainment, most have slight imperfections, mistakes, which go unseen, until they’re released and caught by the movie audience. These mistakes don’t detract from the film, and finding them are just as fun as watching the movie. For the past several years, Isla Grey has written a “Movie Mistakes” column for Bellaonline. “Reel to Reel” is a collection of some of those columns, spotlighting the fun goofs found in some of our favorite movies. Can you spot them? Grab the popcorn, sit back, and happy movie watching!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
The Notebook
There’s no question--Noah and Allie are in love. Set in two different time periods, the beginning of the pair’s relationship is shown via a notebook an older Noah reads to Allie who is suffering the effects of dementia. Can true love ever be forgotten? Here are a few movie mistakes to look for while watching “The Notebook”.
Near the beginning of the movie, the younger Allie and Noah are at a carnival. After their first encounter, Allie and another man get on the Ferris wheel. The man is holding cotton candy in his right hand. This is noticeable throughout the scene. After Noah has climbed aboard and gets Allie to go out with him, the cotton candy the man was holding is now gone.
After Noah and Allie have watched the movie in the theater, they decide to go for a walk. When they get to the traffic light, Noah tells her how he used to lie in the road and demonstrates for her. At first, Noah is closer to the center of the lane to his left.  (This is noticeable in the overhead view.) During the close-up, Noah is now closer to the double lines that run down the middle of the road. This happens again when Allie joins him. At first, they are closer to the center of the lane to their left, but the next view shows them near the double lines.
AUTHOR BIO:
Isla Grey is from Central Virginia and at an early age developed a love of movies.  She shared many Sunday afternoons watching old favorites with her grandmother that included everything from “Gone with the Wind” and “Rio Bravo” to “Titanic” and “The Mummy”.  (Her grandmother may or may not have made fun of her when she covered her eyes during “Anaconda”.)
Working as Bellaonline’s Movie Mistakes editor since 2012 has given Isla the opportunity to indulge in two of her passions—movies and writing.
When Isla isn’t writing or watching movies, most of her time is spent with her ever active daughter and her band of cats.  She also enjoys good music, reading biographies and ghost stories and taking quiet strolls.
BLURB:
Starting over is hard enough but when ghosts decide to hitch a ride into the future—things can get complicated.
Widowed Vivi leaves California for a new start back east landing in a college town near her old friend Vikram, now the local ‘spiritual’ leader and disappointing lover. But the two have old business which leads them to uncovering the ghosts they conjured long before and the ones that are haunting them now.  Vivi reclaims her life, -- with the help of a couple different dimensions-- saying hi to the ghosts who choose to hang around, and growing a new garden and a new life.
EXCERPT TWO:
They have settled into their chairs and Tara is tossing some cards, shuffling them and getting a feel. She flips over three cards.
“Oh, my dear. Some bleak times, past, yes?”
Vivi is startled by this pronouncement. “Well, it’s been a time of change, I’d say.”
“Change?” says Tara. “You betcha. This Tower card is about the whole thing coming crashing down. But it’s in the past position. See here? This is the present,” she shows Vivi the 7 of cups. It’s a picture of a man taking a look at a whole gallery of possibilities. “Look at him”, Tara says. “He’s got lots of things to choose from.”
“Well, that sounds good,” says Vivi tentatively.
“Not bad. Don’t get over infatuated with the possibilities. And the last one… here. The Hermit. Yep.”
“What’s that mean?”
“Oh it’s fine. Just a time to go inside and let things percolate. Inner wisdom and all that. Not a bad sentence!” Tara laughs again. “Now. Anything specific on your mind?” Tara continues to flip cards. “So,” she says. “Who is this guy? This King keeps showing up. King of Cups? He fell out of the deck twice while I was shuffling. “Who is this guy who won’t leave you alone?”
Vivi is mystified. “How did you…?’
“Oh, it’s not magic. The cards just know, that’s all. They pick up what you bring. Who is this guy?”
GUEST POST:
My Favorite Memories Spent at the Local Library:
“Books are keys to wisdom's treasure.
Books are gates to lands of pleasure.
Books are paths that upward lead,
Books are friends: come let us read."
~ Emilie Poulsson
I grew up in Detroit Michigan in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
This was before the city was drained of hope by the collapse of the auto industry. It was at a time when the great city buildings, built by the wealth of the auto makers reflected the old fashioned idea that art and the humanities could build a better society for everyone no matter your wealth, color or religion.
The Art Institute of Detroit was built in that era and featured prominent murals by Diego Rivera depicting the power of the American worker and extolling the virtues of American ingenuity. Yes, he was a communist and there was that ‘socialista’ slant as well, but no one talked about that til much later. Across the street, was the grand Detroit Public Library. There were impressive stairs leading up to big glass doors. Marble floors shone and led me up the great carved staircases to the quiet, high ceilinged reading rooms. I planted myself in the Theatre collection.
I wanted desperately to be an actress. It was the world that made the most sense to me since I was very small. I understood the scope of large stories, the drape of velvet curtains, the sweep of grand entrances and the magical language of Shakespeare or the silly howling of Kaufman and Hart comedies. My mother was horrified! Terrified!  How would her little girl with the romantic visions make her way in life?
She sent me to the library. Whenever I talked about the theatre she would drop me off at that grand building and told me to start reading. Just keep reading. And I did. I read every play, every history book, every picture book that mentioned the theatre. This was the era of language in theatre—Eugene O’Neill, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, William Inge, Kaufman and Hart, Clifford Odets, Maxwell Anderson-- these were the language geniuses writing in the theatre. I drank in their wisdom and rhythms and concept of story like the thirsty little fish I was. Language was not taboo in the theatre. Poetry was happy to perch on the stage in the service of grand events. Plays were novels on their feet. They spoke through great stories but also through poetry and rhythm.
That kind of writing is out of fashion in the theatre now, but it is how I came to understand storytelling. Richness, hope and yes, elitist, European-centric, male dominated storytelling. But starting there, I soon learned the wisdom of the next generation of writers and readers A sharp backdrop of the best minds of the last centuries remained flagging my consciousness. My initial reading pushed me to understand more expansive and inclusive visions; art, great longing and the way in which we dream. All of us.
Books are secret worlds safe from the world. A day at the library let me dream, and no one could interfere with any dream I dreamed hard enough to make come true. And I’ve lived quite a few of them.
