The Coach’s Wife

by Barbara Casey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Fiction/Mystery/Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The Cinderella Coyotes of State University are in the Final Four, poised to win the NCAA National Championship in basketball—the culmination of March Madness. For Marla Conners, she's proud of her husband Neal, and his achievement of coaching a collegiate team to the pinnacle of his career and the ultimate victory for his team. Yet, Marla's idyllic life is about to be viciously attacked and torn apart by a different madness—her husband's reputation ruined, a university disgraced, and she finds herself on trial accused of first-degree murder.

The Coach’s Wife is rife with spine-tingling suspense, conspiracy, deceit, and murder, sizzling and seductive passion, right down to the last second buzzer-beating heroics. This is also a candid and vivid behind-the-scenes portrait of Division One college basketball, university politics, money and corruption, and all the lives that are blessed and ruined by it all.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Ray Knox pulled the collar on his coat up tighter around his neck and ears and shoved his hands deep into his pockets.  He cursed under his breath when he saw a group of drunks, probably Seawolf fans, coming his way.  It was too dark to see who they were, but if they were Seawolfers, he was sure they would recognize him if they saw him.  And even if they were blind drunk, they would wonder what in the hell he was doing hanging out in a service entrance doorway of the coliseum at three o’clock in the morning.  Christ.  That was all he needed.  He pushed his back against the cold metal door as far as he could hoping he wouldn’t be seen.  The five men burst into an off-key rendition of the Piedmont State Fight Song and staggered past the doorway, oblivious of the cold and of him.  One of the men tossed an empty beer can onto the pavement, creating even more racket.  Knox listened to it roll several yards until it finally stopped and then heard the pop and hissing sound of another can being opened.
Christ it was cold.  A blast of frigid air whistled around the door frame.  He cursed again.  At Morgan for getting him into this situation and at himself for doing it.  This had to be the low point in Knox’s career.  Hanging out in darkened doorways in the middle of the night waiting to make a pay-off.  To make it even worse, the guy he was supposed to meet was late.  He had told Knox 2:30. Unless Knox got the directions mixed up.  But the guy had said the service entrance on the east side of the coliseum.  And that’s where the hell he was.  Freezing his ass off and dodging drunken Seawolf fans so he wouldn’t be seen.
Knox pulled out a wadded up handkerchief from his hip pocket and wiped his nose.  He was probably getting sick.  Morgan was going to make up for this big time if he expected Knox to keep doing his dirty work for him.  No more cheap presents or token salary increases.  Shit, he had enough TVs and cameras and electronic gadgets.  Cheap toys from Morgan.  He wanted some big money—security for when he decided to retire.  And the way he was feeling now, he was ready to retire.
Knox heard footsteps, the empty beer can being kicked, and someone—a man—cuss.  Knox leaned out slightly from the doorway and peered into the darkness.  He smelled him—the rancid odor of nervous sweat—before he saw him.
“You got something for me, heh?”
Realm of Dragons: Fight for the Crown
by L.C. Conn
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Fantasy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
The Realm of Dragons is in peril from hidden plots and conspirators, which threaten not only the crown, but the dragons that are at the very heart of it.
Teagan Loinsigh, long ago banished from her magical home of dragons now lives on Earth. Her dreams and memories of the great creatures are put down to fantasies and an overactive imagination, until one day she comes across a creature so unlike any other in the land she lives in. A baby dragon.
Muniath Magaoidh, a Dragon Warden fallen so low by a failed mission, must be brought back from his despair to retrieve what is lost.
Scetis Mordha, alone in the world since he was a child. Finds himself in the middle of intrigue and conspiracy against The Realm of Dragons.
Tying them all together is a dragon. Not just a dragon but The King of Dragons.
Can these four save The Realm of Dragons?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

The wind tugged at the fur outer edge as it sought to tear the snug fitting hood from his head. Scetis made sure the mouth and nose flap was securely in place as he squinted into the raging blizzard. His only thought was up. As long as he could still feel himself climbing, he knew he was going the right way. He lifted his foot out of the newly fallen soft snow and stepped forwards, only for it to sink down now to his knee. Pulling at his other, he kept moving higher and higher.

A cold chill went up his spine, one that had nothing to do with the bad weather around him. Scetis stumbled a little, feeling his legs go numb and pains race through his chest. He felt like the air was leaving his body and ripped the covering from his face. The freezing air raced into his lungs and chilled him to the bone. Driven down onto his knees he sank into the snow; it gripped at him, almost welcoming him into its embrace. Still gasping for breath, he fumbled with the straps of his bag, hoping to get to the elixir, trying to stop the pain that now ravaged his body as the poison took over. His mind raced, his hands shook, and he could not get the buckles undone. A cry escaped his lips and he pitched forward into the snow. Then all was dark.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
HOURS WENT BY, THOUGH I COULDN’T be clear how many. I awoke from a dream where I was reliving my attack. Panic swelled in every cell of my body. Disoriented and completely confused; where was I? What had happened to me? Soft lambskin wraps restrained my wrists, with an IV in the back of my hand. My body hurt all over and my left eye was swollen shut.
A gentle hand touched mine. I opened my eyes to a small girl, wearing a hospital gown, gazing at me through the bed rails. The warmth of her smile gave me a sense of calmness. That’s when I realized I was in the hospital.
A matronly nurse with a heavy Southern accent stole my attention from the little girl.
“It’s okay, child, you’re in the hospital. There has been an accident. Please try to stay calm. Let me take off these wrist restraints. I’m so sorry we had to put them on, but you were thrashing so much during the night we thought you might hurt yourself or pull out your IV.”
The feeling of desperation overwhelmed me. “Where am I? What’s happening?”
She caressed my face, bringing my gaze to her. “My name is Laura and you’re safe. You’re going to be okay. You had an accident, so to speak, and you’re in the hospital.
“The hospital? What kind of accident?”
“Look, honey, try to stay calm. You had a rough night. Doctor Kennedy will be in shortly to see you.”
My throat felt raw and I could hardly speak. “Where is the little girl?”
“What little girl?”
I pointed to the side of my bed where the child had been standing less than a minute before. “She was right there!”
“Honey, I didn’t see any child. The children’s ward is on another floor.”
GUEST POST:
Writing this book has taught me “The Rule of Three”
In my endeavor to publish my first book, I was fortunate to connect with a seasoned writer who was instrumental in my learning a valuable lesson about feedback. She called it "The Rule of Three."
As a new writer, being published for the first time, I wanted to put my best foot forward. As many do, I found family and friends to beta read my book. As luck would have it, I met an author online, who I admire greatly, to design the book covers for my trilogy.  During one of our conversations, she gave me some invaluable advice about considering feedback from readers. She called it The Rule of Three.
This advice came from her when I asked her how to handle feedback. The question was simple, "How do I know what is important to change in my story based on feedback I get from my readers." If I feel strongly about leaving something in the story, when do I consider suggestions?
Her answer was even simpler than the question. She told me that she uses "The Rule of Three," and she gave me a concrete but simple example. Suppose you have a character who drinks coffee all the time. For you, it is part of who he is. This person has a coffee in their hand throughout your whole story. One of your readers suggests that it bothers them, and it is just too much. Maybe they find it distracting or unnecessary. Her advice is that she would listen, take it under advisement and keep the feedback tucked away and think on it. Soon you get a second comment from someone with the same concern. That is, two people that have found your character drinking coffee all the time bothers them. Now you have to really consider the feedback because two people have pointed out that this is an issue. You still feel strongly that this helps design your character's personality. You don't want to take it out, and you wonder why people find this so annoying. After all, there are a lot of people in this world that drink coffee all day. Then it happens, you get a comment from a third reader. Now you really have to consider the feedback. The point is, no matter how strongly you feel about leaving the coffee in the story, it really is about the readers. If you have gotten the same feedback three times, it is probably a signal that you should at least downplay the coffee a little, if not take it out entirely.
Finding George Washington:
A Time Travel Tale
by Bill Zarchy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical-Time Travel-Baseball Thriller

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
On a freezing night in 1778, General George Washington vanishes. Walking away from the Valley Forge encampment, he takes a fall and is knocked unconscious, only to reappear at a dog park on San Francisco Bay—in the summer of 2014.
Washington befriends two Berkeley twenty-somethings who help him cope with the astonishing—and often comical—surprises of the twenty-first century.
Washington’s absence from Valley Forge, however, is not without serious consequences. As the world rapidly devolves around them—and their beloved Giants fight to salvage a disappointing season—George, Tim, and Matt are catapulted on a race across America to find a way to get George back to 1778.
Equal parts time travel tale, thriller, and baseball saga, Finding George Washington is a gripping, humorous, and entertaining look at what happens when past and present collide in the 9th inning, with the bases loaded and no one warming up in the bullpen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

A new freeze gripped the valley, and a few inches of virgin white covered the now-frozen ruts in the roads. When the soldiers first arrived at this winter encampment two months before, rain and cold had compounded the misery of the men. Lately it had been freezing and snowing, making the hardened ground easier to traverse than the sleety, slippery mud had been.

A small farmhouse made of tan and brown fieldstone sat in flat bottomland near the creek. The back door opened and a splash of warm light lit the new snow. From inside came the sounds of a party—a fiddle, laughter, and high-energy conversation. A tall man in a heavy cloak and three-cornered hat stepped off the small porch at the rear of the house and into the cold. A sentry snapped to attention.

“Just getting some air, lad, stand easy,” the Gdeneral said. “No need to follow.” He trudged off north, away from the house, enjoying the brisk chill.

Ah, he thought, it’s fine to have my dear wife here with me these past couple of weeks! She and the other wives provide such a boost to the morale and hopefulness of the men. It’s worth a wee party to celebrate the difference they make … and my birthday.

The dreadful winter weather and the spread of disease had cost him one-fourth of his army in the early going, but at last there were signs of hope. Foraging for food was still a daily struggle, but now the men were finally housed in hundreds of hastily constructed wooden huts.

The eager effervescence of the Marquis de Lafayette for the past half year; the appearance of the Polish nobleman Pulaski a few months before; the continued loyalty of so many of the troops; the imminent arrival any day now of the Prussian Baron von Steuben; and the General’s wife coming to stay with him during the winter encampment—all these events gave him hope.

GUEST POST:

Finding the Cover for Finding George

I knew from the beginning what I wanted on the cover for my debut novel, Finding George Washington: A Time Travel Tale.

It’s not an easy story to characterize. Genre: a fine sci-fi blend, with notes of history, baseball saga, and action thriller. But I had lived with it for long enough to have some images in mind.

I knew I wanted to feature a picture of George. Not the old marble-faced George on the dollar bill, but a younger version, George at 45, his age in my story. A Revolutionary War George, in uniform. The one who disappears from his own time and shows up in 2014 on the shores of San Francisco Bay.

I knew I wanted to show a baseball field with some players in the background, because baseball is a central theme and metaphor in Finding George. I wanted a shot of a locomotive, because trains are important in the story.

I wanted to show the green-handled sword Washington carried into battle, as well as his headquarters, the stone house where he lived during the Valley Forge encampment in winter 1777-78.

And I knew I wanted the cover to reflect a contemporary sensibility, with a bit of an old-timey feeling. Not old-fashioned or outdated, but stylized to suggest an amalgam of traditional and modern.

I had pictures of all these elements from my research travels. I selected photos of a painting of Washington at the Smithsonian, a baseball field in Philadelphia, an Amtrak train, the headquarters house, and the sword.

I put together a few rough versions of cover art in PhotoShop. They had all the elements I had in mind, but had no depth to them, no life.

Then I hired Matthew FĂ©lix for line editing, publication services, and book design, one of my best all-around decisions. I told him what I had in mind for the cover. He sent me a list of 100 sci-fi bestsellers and suggested I select my ten favorite-looking covers, as a way of conveying the style I had in mind. This was a fruitful exercise. I noticed immediately that I was drawn to the covers that had prominent images in the foreground, plus distant views in the background of landscapes or cities or other places. Covers with depth.

From these, and with the images I provided, he put together four prototype covers, and I promptly picked one. I had been thinking of using the picture of George full length, but Matthew cropped it into a head-and-shoulders shot, with an informal half-smile and good eye contact. He split off the word “Finding” from the rest of the title, placing it into an orange, isosceles triangle that, on first viewing, resembles a sports banner. On closer examination, we see it also looks like a headlight beam emanating from a blue locomotive. The background for the cover is a shot of the infield and the stands at the ballpark.

“Finding” is in a traditional-looking script font, “George Washington” in an old-timey font that looks like it belongs on a baseball jersey. The subtitle “A Time Travel Tale” is prominent, per my request, as I want potential readers to know what they’re getting into. It’s not a biography. The subtitle and byline are both in Optima bold, a mid-20th-Century font that adds a modern flavor.

The first draft also included the headquarters house, but it crowded the cover. Not worth it. The sword never made it onto the cover either. Too much clutter.

Best of all, Matthew came up with a couple of visual ideas that added hugely to the cover’s appeal. First, he bought stock photos of a baseball and crossed bats and placed them just under George’s image. And he added a traditional clockface with Roman numerals, as a round “medallion” behind GW’s head and shoulders. The clock numerals are repeated concentrically four or five times, adding a sense of movement, vibration, and disconcerting instability to these still images. This suggests time travel in a simple and effective way. (When I overthink it, of course, time travel is more about calendars than clockfaces, but the image still works.)

In one of Matthew’s other cover prototypes, George was wearing a baseball cap. I loved it. Though it was jaunty and appealing, I decided it was probably too cute, even too goofy, to put on the cover of a book like this: a fine sci-fi blend, with notes of history, baseball saga, and action thriller.
