MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book, “Where is He? Tank, the Tortoise,” is an interesting, compelling, engaging children’s read filled with bright illustrations and important, but complex life lesson themes.

This book tells the story of Tank, a Russian tortoise, and his strange love of string beans, while also diving deep into the heartbreaking situation of when pet owners pass on leaving their pets in a state of anxiety, worry, grief and distress.

This story line is quite unique and offers valuable insight into a topic that is often not talked about in front of kid’s – death.  This story is told from Tank’s point-of-view with Tank talking about missing his owner, worrying about where he is, and reflecting on cherished memories shared together.  This book shows Tank cycling through the five stages of grief and the sad and significant impact of losing his owner.

The author cleverly uses Tank’s story to approach the delicate topic of death and the giant hole a loved one leaves after they are gone.  While family and friends are deeply affected by this loss, it was very interesting to hear the impact on the pets.  Besides the emotional and mental tolls of losing a loved one, these pets are often completely uprooted, leaving behind their home and everything and everyone they know, and are likely sent to a pet store or shelter to be re-adopted.  I imagine most cats and dogs don’t outlive their owners too often, however, this seems more common for a tortoise as they tend to have much longer lifespans.  According to AZ Animals:the average lifespan of a Russian tortoise is over 40-50 years… sometimes living to be up to 200 years old.”  Wow!!  I knew they lived a long time but had no idea it was 200 years!!

This book is full of vibrant, colorful illustrations that are sure to be enjoyed by young readers.  However, I was very surprised to find actual photographs included among the book’s illustrations.  While I imagine the photos are of real-life inspiration Tank, this felt quite distracting and confusing.  While I think young readers would love to see pics of the real Tank, I feel like they were inappropriately placed and should have been added at the end of the story or even the back cover.  Also, a short description of these pics would have been nice since they were so randomly inserted into the middle of the story.  I honestly thought this had been some kind of error, or that I had received a rough draft copy that was still waiting on the illustrator to turn the photos into illustrations until I saw the author mention that she intentionally chose to add the photos this way.  While the photos do offer a unique quality as I can’t recall any other children’s book that has done so, it just feels unfitting and quite puzzling.

This book is twenty-four pages front-to-back with fifteen of those pages comprised of text.

While this book does touch on highly sensitive topics such as death, it is still appropriately “G” rated as there is no swearing, no violence, no adult situations, and no sexual content.

This book is currently not part of a book series and therefore can be read as a standalone book.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!!  I think all young readers and their families will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!

  1. Thank you so much for the in depth review of my book. I greatly appreciate it. I wanted my book to be unique unlike the regular books. So, I chose to use real pictures of Tank.
It is amazing to just watch his transformation from aloof to wandering around since he got accustomed to his new home with us. We are all happy. Thank you again.πŸ™πŸ»πŸ’πŸ™πŸ»

  2. Thank you again for the reviews. I was at work and didn’t finish my previous note. The picture of the previous owner in my book is an illustration of my dear father. He was the kindest soul. I wanted to honor him and what better way to show it, is for the entire world to see it in my book.
The picture of the new owner is an illustration of my husband.
