What is Your Favorite Motivational Phrase and How Do You Apply it to Your Writings, Life, etc.?

My favorite phrase is, “Human being, not human doing.” As a child, my parents only gave me praise and attention when I accomplished something: I got a good grade, I cleaned the house, I won an award, etc. Based on this blueprint, I subconsciously believed that my worth was based on my accomplishments. I subconsciously believed that love needed to be earned.

Following this blueprint, I labored tirelessly until I accomplished all of my goals. I became a lawyer at 23. I became a homeowner. I completed marathons and triathlons. Despite my achievements, I still felt empty. Believing that love was something to be earned, I found myself in romantic relationships with people who cared for me conditionally. I found myself entangled in relationships where I gave more than I received.

Through my spiritual journey and experience with ayahuasca, I learned that our value is not derived by doing but simply by being. The tenants of Christianity state that we are made in God’s image. A Hindu legend tells the story of Brahma hiding divinity deep within each human being. Through science, we discovered that we are made of stardust. Despite the varying ideologies, we can find a universal truth: we are born worthy exactly as we are.

Once I unburied my repressed traumas, I learned to spend less effort “doing” and surrender to simply "being." My first book, Rebirth of a Sage tells the story of how I learned to find self-love and worth simply by being.

Born in the Philippines, Lani Gonzales immigrated to Virginia, USA, with her family when she was only two years old.
