MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book, “Family Fun at the Lake,” is an amusing, entertaining, stimulating children’s read filled with exciting outdoor adventures and family bonding elements.
This book portrays many important, valuable life lessons and morals that are sure to teach, inspire, and resonate with young readers. “Family Fun at the Lake,” cleverly teaches children about life jacket safety, wearing sunscreen, and general camping safety protocols. This book certainly opens the door for parents to engage in after reading discussions drawing on these essential life lessons.
This story follows a young, curious, adventurous girl, who spends time with her family at the lake. I loved how the pages were filled with so many fun and exciting outdoorsy activities such as boat rides, wagon rides, porch swings, swimming, hiking, fishing, building sandcastles, singing, telling jokes, campfires, learning about the wildlife, etc. It can be quite challenging keeping a kid not only away from TV’s, cellphones, laptops, gaming consoles, etc., - but also keeping them entertained without such screens can seem nearly impossible. “Family Fun at the Lake,” encourages young readers to embrace the simple joy of nature and family togetherness. This book is sure to inspire readers to find happiness and fulfillment with those closest to them – their friends, family, and loved ones.
While I enjoyed the bright, colorful illustrations that beautifully capture the outdoorsy essence, I felt the jagged outline style was a bit rough and took away from the serene nature drawings.
While I enjoyed the concept and story line of this book, I felt it truly lacked personalization and identification. Most children’s books have actual characters that drive the story forward. “Family Fun at the Lake,” has no character names. There are only titles such as “Mommy,” “Daddy,” “Uncle,” “Great Grandma,” and “Great Grandpa,” etc. and while that is totally fine for those supporting characters as that is how the child would refer to them. However, I just expected the little girl to introduce herself at the beginning of the book, with a name, age, and a few characteristics. I think this type of personalization is what helps young readers connect with the stories and allows them to identify and relate with the characters. Instead, this book just showed a random, unnamed family, and while the author may have felt that this might allow for a broader range of connection, I personally feel it made the story less relatable and disconnected.
This book is “G” rated as there is no swearing, no violence, no adult situations, and no sexual content.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! I think all young readers and their families will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!

Katelyn Prendergast grew up in the Alberta prairies where she spent the majority of her time at the family lake cabin, which inspired her creative side for crafting, painting, and her great passion for writing. She still lives in the prairies with her husband and two spirited young daughters, where she is as comfortable bingeing a great show as she is spending the day outside with her family. As it is, the only thing that could rival her love of family is a mug of hot chocolate on a frigid Canadian night. Her first book, Family Fun at the Lake, reflects the simplicity of her life as a child and mirrors those feelings in watching her own children grow up.
