GENRE: Fiction - Coming of Age

BLURB:
It is June 1979, and school is out for the summer! Having just turned ten years old, Shane Anderson is your typical fun-loving kid who just moved from the suburbs to the city. Sure, he likes to exit the same door he entered. And he likes turning lights on and off an even number of times. And he has to keep scary movie scenes out of his head at bedtime. But apart from that (and maybe a few other things), he's just a normal guy with a musical mom, a semi-hippie dad and the coolest sister around. Join him as he experiences many notable adventures against the backdrop of toys, tunes, TV shows and new-found friends.

EXCERPT ONE:
It became obvious that the game needed something. It needed to be kicked up a notch, so with my turn that is precisely what I did.
“Double Dare,” I said, skipping right over Dare.
Everyone looked at me as if to say, Wow, this is getting serious.
Mindy would deliver the Double Dare. “Kiss Sarah,” Mindy said.
There was a pause.
“On the LIPS!” Samantha added.
Whoa! It was just too much for me. I could tell Sarah wouldn’t mind, which was making me even more excited. But I couldn’t go through with it. It just wasn’t time.
“What about the cheek instead?” I asked.
“Well, as the official judge, I think switching from lips to cheek is fine…it’s still a kiss,” Sarah said playfully.
“Well get to it Shane!” said Noah. “What are you waiting for?”
I moved in quickly, planted my lips to Sarah’s cheek then removed them. While I did not see fireworks like Bobby did on The Brady Bunch, it was still amazing! The feeling of my lips on her skin was the most wonderful feeling I had ever felt. And it was made all the better by the wonderful smell that surrounded her, which I couldn’t exactly place.
“What flavour?” I asked in a mild trance.
“Green apple,” she said holding up her green Lip Smacker container.
For Sarah’s turn, she had to kiss ME on the cheek. And let me tell you, it was a nice sequel. Her lips on my skin felt just as nice as the first kiss, possibly better.

MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book is an interesting, intriguing, charming coming of age read that is full of entertaining, humorous, and whimsical story lines and plot points.
This book is an enjoyable blast from the past back to Summer of ’79 when times were simpler, life was easier, less complicated, and things overall were straightforward.
This book takes you on an entertaining journey full of heartwarming nostalgia and pop culture references.
This book tells a strong, coming of age story, with a unique and diverse character that many readers will quickly click with.
This book follows the story of the main character, Shane, a fun-loving, 10-year-old kid and his exciting adventures of enjoying the summer, moving to the city, making new friends, and his adjustment to his new life and surroundings.
While Shane, is quite the adorable and entertaining character that readers are sure to quickly connect with and enjoy following along with his story, he certainly has a few quirks and unusual habits. While undiagnosed or undisclosed, it seems like Shane could possibly have Autism, OCD, and/or ADHD as the book mentions going through doors, up and down stairs, and turning the lights on and off – all done in an even number of times. These diagnoses weren’t popular or common over the late 70’s and early 80’s and I’m sure many kids went undiagnosed as it was just chalked up to odd behaviors. Shane’s story offers unique insight into a boy struggling with anxiety, stress, and sensitivities, while navigating through adolescence of first crushes, playing Truth or Dare, dance parties, roller coasters, and adapting to a new city life.
While ’79 was a bit before my time, I must admit, life did sound easier and less chaotic than today’s uncertain, stressful pandemic days. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am a total millennial and I’d go crazy without my all my Wi-Fi gadgets, emails, text messages, daily Starbucks caffeine fix and Amazon shopping sprees, but this book did offer a nice escape to a time when things were less materialistic, and it was safe for kids to just be kids and grow up without today’s scary violence anxieties. I also enjoyed the many pop culture references of music, movies, tv shows, toys, games, and celebrities. And I certainly could relate to no school sick days not being the same without an episode of The Price is Right LOL!!!
This book is a quick paced read, with only 278 eBook pages across twelve short chapters.
I also enjoyed that the author included a map of the new townhomes Shane moves into along with some of the nearby hot spots that are mentioned in the book.
This book is Book One of the Delightful Oddball Trilogy. Therefore, this book can easily be read as a standalone. This book is an excellent start to a new book series, and I look forward to checking out the rest of book series and following along with Shane and his friends upcoming adventures.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! I think all coming of age readers and fiction fans will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
