BLURB:

On a remote island with only a herd of wild horses for company, two ex-best friends struggle to survive but soon realize they’re not alone.

After a sudden storm turned what should have been a quick boat ride into a nightmare, Annie is shipwrecked on a remote island near Nova Scotia with her ex-best friend Mirra. Learning to survive together would have been easier if they could get along--not possible after the hurtful words neither can forget. Annie and Mirra's only company is a herd of wild horses--or that's what the 14-year-old girls think at first. But when they discover still warm embers from a campfire and man-sized footprints, they know they're not alone.

EXCERPT ONE:

I clung onto the dash and hit 9 1 before a gigantic tower of greenish-gray water blasted over us. It soaked the phone. I caught my breath and tried punching the final 1. Please, oh, please. But nothing. A wall of water crashed onto the boat, soaking it more. Icy water sloshed around our ankles. The bow tilted to sea level again. “Hang on—” When I grabbed for the side-rail, the phone dropped to my feet. There was no chance of grabbing it—I was holding on for dear life as wave after wave washed onto the deck. The boat’s motor died. The storm was sweeping us out of the bay and into the open sea.

“Call the Coast Guard!” I screamed, remembering the radio.

Mirra pressed a button and shouted, “Coast Guard! Coast Guard!”

Nothing except static.

“Mayday! Mayday!” Mirra shrieked.

The bow tilted up, and the cooler slid, hitting the stern and sounding like a gunshot. Clutching onto the handrail, I held my breath. A saltwater wall, taller than any before, swept over us. Coughing and sputtering, I looked for Mirra. She was gripping the wheel. A scream stuck in my throat as the boat plunged.

When the wave sliced over us, it washed my legs out from under me. I closed my eyes as the freezing cold ocean ripped away my hat and gushed down on me.

The boat pitched sideways. I lost my grip and tumbled into the raging water.

The shark’s jaws appeared, but I only looked at its eye.

GUEST POST:

My Favorite Scene in Stranded on Castaway Island…

One of my favorite scenes occurs while Anne and Mirra are struggling to survive on a lifeboat in the Atlantic ocean. They are desperate for water, hungry, sun-burned, and frightened. The reader doesn’t think things can get worse, but they do.

“Shark!” Mirra yelled, scooting her body closer to the center of the raft.

He’ll flip us over. Bite into the raft. And once we’re thrashing around in the water—I clutched onto my handholds.

Mirra cried out as silver-blue flashed a second time, rocking the raft.

This couldn’t be happening! I bit my chapped lips so hard I tasted blood. The shark circled us again. I couldn’t stop scenes from shark movies flashing in my head. Sharks torpedoing out of the water, jaws open wide, teeth like hooked white knives. The raft rocked again, this time so violently, the green cup we’d used to bail water washed away.

The dorsal fin circled around us faster now, as if the shark knew it was about to feed. A roar came up from somewhere deep inside me. You think you can flip us over like we’re nothing. I pulled on the rope bringing the cooler closer to the raft. You think you can fall asleep at the wheel and kill my mother. I grabbed the knife. You think you can laugh at me behind my back and I’ll just forget? I clutched the knife in my hand. You think I’ll give up?

“Grab my leg,” I commanded Mirra. “Don’t let me fall in.”

“What are you going to do?” she whimpered. But she took a firm hold of my ankle. I raised my arm. The shark’s jaws appeared, but I only looked at its eye.

When I slashed towards the shark’s eye, my arm was unbelievably strong and dead-on. I pierced that eye, hearing a popping sound a millisecond before I realized my mistake. The angry shark thrashed its tail so hard it launched the flimsy raft out of the water. Airborne, we spun, landing hard, half the raft dipping into the water, ocean slurping in.

“Bail!” I called to Mirra.

She cupped her hands and frantically flung water. Still clutching the knife, I searched for the shark. A swirl and . . . Whoosh! The shark’s tail slapped at the raft sending us spinning again. One more slap, seeming like a desperate last attempt. I held my breath and, Yes! The dorsal fin darted away.

Mirra’s gasping breaths and her eyes, wide and swimming with terror, made me realize this wasn’t a scene from a movie. This had really happened. My whole body shook. I tried to keep watching in case the shark returned, but I knew I was too shaky to do anything if it did.

As the raft rocked like a baby’s cradle, I longed to have my father’s strong arms around me. But I didn’t have his arms. I only had mine.

  4. I like exciting, action-filled plots. I was inspired to write this story after reading an article about scientists finding a boy's skeleton on an island.
