Arid Sea

Spider Green Mystery Thriller Series

Book Two

by Norm Harris

GENRE: Mystery / Thriller (Legal Military)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Faydra “Spider” Green is a spirited Navy lawyer who wants nothing more than to do the right thing and see justice done. After reconciling with her father, former President William Green, Fay is asked to investigate the mysterious disappearance of Alvin Joe, a retired admiral. He has vanished – seemingly into thin air – from his Florida home, along with secret files for a top-secret military weapon. Alongside her bubbly, quick-witted sister and a handsome, affable Sheriff, Fay sets out to track down Joe. But she soon finds herself embroiled in a deeper and far more sinister plot involving an unscrupulous corporation, the mafia, and a truly evil man who has his sights set on destroying her.
EXCERPT ONE:
In five minutes, her sister would be gator chow. She looked back to the spot where she had last seen Pearce. Her sister was swimming for all she was worth, with the gator hot on her heels. Pearce was a good swimmer. As Fay watched her sister make a valiant attempt to stay ahead of the gator, she recalled an observation Charles Darwin, the evolutionist, had once made: “He who hesitates is… lunch.” Fay grabbed the remaining speargun and prepared to swim to her sister’s aid. Just as she was about to leap from the boat, she spotted a shark. A giant bull shark hovered about three feet back and about five feet below the boat’s stern. Pearce was heading directly away from the gator’s jaws into those of the waiting bull shark. Were these two creatures working this area together? The gator herded Pearce toward Jaws Junior, and fish and reptile would split the profits? Out of the frying pan and into the fire, as they said – or in this case, out of the fire and into the inferno. Fay needed to think fast. She pointed the speargun at the shark. After shoving the gun into the water, she fired. She must have hit the fish, as the speargun ripped from her hands and disappeared into the water. This was not a good move on her part. Now there was an angry alligator, a wounded bull shark, and a blood trail in the water.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book is an intriguing, gripping, nail-biting, entertaining read!!
An excellent follow up to an already compelling and successful book series!!
This book quickly grabs hold of the reader and keeps them fully engaged until the last page!!
This book joyfully reunites us with strong female heroine, Faydra Green, everyone’s favorite former First Daughter and dedicated JAG lawyer.  Fay is back stronger than ever and ready for another exciting adventure full of rescue missions, national security threats, human-trafficking rings and so much more!!!  This book is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat as you find yourself trying to help Fay solve the case and fight for justice!!
This book immediately kicks off with the disappearance of Admiral Alvin Joe and his case being assigned to Fay.  The book maintains a fast pace with the intrigue and suspense continuing to build up over the course of the story.
I enjoyed the return of many of the main characters including, Fay’s half-sister, Petty Officer J. Pearce.  While book one was chalked full of an overwhelming array of characters which at times was a bit confusing, and even more so when the characters had multiple names/nicknames that were used interchangeably, book two wasn’t much different.  While it seems book two had less new characters to introduce, with many returning characters, the complexity of names was still a significant distraction.  For example, the main character is called, “Faydra,” “Fay,” “Spider,” and her half-sister is referred to as “J. Pearce,” “JP,” and “Pearce,” even the missing admiral is mentioned as “Admiral Alvin Joe,” “Admiral,” “Admiral Joe,” “Alvin,” “Al,” “Alvin Joe,” “the Joes,” and so on.  It seems many of the characters have at least three names and those names are used rapidly and interchangeably throughout the story.  I find this quite annoying and distracting.  While some nicknames seem obvious, “Alvin,” to “Al,” many others are more complex.
Again, I must admit that while I liked the main character, Fay, I found her (and her sister Pearce) overt usage of Southern twang a bit annoying.  Every sentence with “y’all,” felt tiresome.  I understand Southern writing and I have several friends from the South, and yes, they do say, “y’all,” quite often, but it’s not after almost every sentence.  It just felt a bit overused and really detracted from the character’s sophistication.  Plus, as daughters of the former President of the United States, I just expected them to be a bit more polished and well-spoken.
I truly appreciated the author’s well-researched and knowledgeable legal military writing style that felt authentic and accurate.
I also enjoyed the author’s writing style that is full of clever plot points, intriguing story lines, and vividly described details.
This book is Book Two of Five in the "Spider Green Mystery Book Series."  This book can be read as a standalone, however readers will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of this book series if they read them in order.  I am looking forward to reviewing Book Three, “Deception Pass,” later this summer.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all mystery, suspense, thriller book readers, and legal military book fans will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!
AUTHOR BIO:
Norm Harris' first novel debuted on an Amazon bestseller list in 2002. It was a one-and-done, but now he's back with a plan to publish a couple of sequels to that first mystery/thriller of days gone by. Except for time spent in military service, he is a second-generation Seattleite (that's what they call those who dwell in the shadow of Mt. Rainier), with his legal beagle son, K-K, and five giant tropical fish. His upcoming release, Arid Sea, is the third book in what he hopes to be an award-winning Spider Green Mystery Story series.
  4. How do you handle writing slumps?
    1. Hi, thanks for asking, Traciem. I do not have a schedule that pressures me into slumps. I write when I have ideas. When I have a "slump" I do something else. An inspiration is what leads you from the slump. When one occurs be ready to write it down. Even if it is unrelated to the scene you got hung up on or not. Sometimes I have an idea. I write it and then figure out how to work the idea into the story line. Be it related or not. I was once writing about a character who was a Marine Embassy Guard. I grew to like the character. Later in the story I decided she would become the angel of death. But a nice angel. That idea shot me off into a new direction for the entire story. When you first awake your mind is not cluttered with day junk. Think up an idea and get it down in your laptop. No matter how insignificant then build around it. I do not plot or plan a story I just write freestyle and see where it takes me.
