BLURB:
Hi there, my name is William and I have a question for you!
Would you like to know how your shoes are made?
I invite you to come inside my papa's workshop and learn all the secrets of the ancient art of shoemaking and more.
Let's embark on a creative adventure of fun challenges and life lessons along the way.

EXCERPT ONE:
“On Monday, he designs and draws the model on paper. This time, the shoes will be red—my favourite colour. Next, he chooses the shoe lasts.
On the shoe last, he makes the pattern to cut the pieces of leather.
Papa tells me, “The last comes first. When you know what you want, you can plan the steps from where you are to where you want to be.””

MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book, "Papa the Shoemaker," is a fun, sweet, entertaining, empowering children's read that promotes brainstorming, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
This book portrays many strong, valuable life lessons and morals that are sure to teach, inspire, and resonate with young readers.
This is the third children’s book I’ve hosted, read, and reviewed from Kyra Kalweit and Dayán Mantecón Roldán, the husband and wife writing team duo. Like their previous two books this book is also filled with strong social and cultural ethics that promote unity and diversity.
This particular book, "Papa the Shoemaker," follows a young boy named William and his Papa, a shoemaker, and their weeklong joint work venture. This book further explores the relationship between William and his Papa while William’s Papa teaches his son the ins and outs of shoe making and a few life lessons along the way.
Some of these important life lessons and themes include brainstorming, critical thinking, problem-solving, hard work, eagerness to learn, gratitude, honesty, integrity, respect, patience, confidence, attention to detail, taking responsibility, acknowledgment of mistake, apologizing, forgiveness, family, friendship, creativity, self-awareness, and many others.
I really liked the story line of William spending time at his papa’s work and his papa taking the time to teach him the trade. I have many, many fond memories as a kid spending time at my mom’s workplace and learning so much!! My mom has worked as a retail manager for over 25 years, and I love clothes and shopping, so it was always so much fun getting to hang out at the mall after school. Of course, she put me to work lol, but I loved it, I was the perfect little Mervyn’s employee at just 9-years-old lol. The skills I learned helping out at the store were beyond invaluable, have helped in both my personal and professional life, and are still tools I use today.
While I enjoyed reading this book, I must admit that this book was my least favorite out the three. Although I love the strong, positive messages and moral lessons, the inclusivity and diversity principles, and the charming illustrations, I found this book a bit challenging and confusing. For example, a few pages in, on the first workday, Monday, the book reads: “Next, he chooses the shoe lasts.” Immediately followed by, “On the shoe last, he makes the pattern to cut the pieces of leather.” While the shoe last is referred to a few more times at no point does the book explain what a shoe last actually is. I honestly had no idea, I had to Google it. At first I thought it was a typo, but as it was used a few more times, it seemed more intentional than accidental. According to Wikipedia, “A Last is a mechanical form shaped like a human foot.” I think this book needs to have more details added with stronger clarification for readers to have a better understanding of what a shoe last is and the overall shoe making process. In addition, while I enjoyed the mistake scenario William created and I did like his solution, I found this part of the book to be overly drawn-out. Also, the line about William taking a secret path from the basement to Papa’s workshop was really odd. All in all, I like the concept of this book, the story line, the lessons; I just think this book would strongly benefit from a few edits to make this book more comprehensive and cohesive.
Like with the author’s other two children’s books, “Papa the Shoemaker,” displays fun, bright, colorful illustrations that bring the story to life.
This book is full of strong, encouraging, and optimistic messages that is sure to inspire confidence, eagerness to learn, and self-awareness.
Please note that this book is text and content heavy which may not be suitable for beginning solo reading.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! I think all young readers and their families will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!
