Happy National Dog Day! Whether you have a dog, a puppy, or just love
dogs – today is the perfect day to show your love for them! According to ASPCA (The American Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), approximately 70-80 million dogs are
owned in the United States. This further
equates to approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a
dog.
This holiday was founded in 2004 by Pet &
Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige. This day was developed to honor dogs and
remember how many dogs still need to be rescued. According to ASPCA, approximately 3.9 million
dogs enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Furthermore, of the dogs entering shelters,
approximately 35% are adopted, 31% are euthanized and 26% of dogs who come in
as strays are returned to their owner (ASPCA).
National Dog Day is against any kind of “breed
ban.” “Rather, we encourage those
seeking new canine companions, to consider choosing adoption first and if you’d
like a pure breed dog, look into a pure breed rescue to see if they have just
the dog you’re looking for," (Paige).
“All a dog wants to do is love and protect
you. That's all. Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings
that deserve compassion and respect. Please consider bringing what was once
considered ‘unwanted love’ into your heart and home on National Dog Day (Paige).”
