An Eye for the Highest and Best by Dr. Nancy-Angel Doetzel - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Dr. Nancy-Angel Doetzel will be awarding a $10 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble Gift Card (Winner's Choice!!!) to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Living in this world of such disruption and uncertainty can result in us facing despair. How can we attune to the rainbow after a storm, and create hope and happiness? How do we develop an eye for the Highest and Best, when faced with what appears to be the worst? What steps should we take to reconnect with our ability to be resilient?

In this book, Dr. Doetzel shares some important insights gained from her own experiences of teaching university, battling cancer, being a journalist, travelling worldwide, dealing with grief, and facing the global pandemic. Along the way, she introduces her readers to fresh ways of viewing their lives, by applying an Appreciative Inquiry lens that inspires the practice of a more conscious way of living, resulting in discovering serenity.

Readers may start to re-examine their own challenges, while discovering their own gems that warrant gratitude. The reflective questions and stories suggest ways of removing blocks to happiness and constructing healthier relationships.

The book is also an ideal tool for educators to apply to teaching Appreciative Inquiry as a qualitative research methodology.
EXCERPT ONE:

While attending a church service in a Mexican Cathedral, Angel’s phone had fallen out of her purse. Reaching for it later, intending to make a call, she suddenly notices it was missing. Frantically, she rushed to the hotel front desk to inquire how she could contact the Cathedral. When she arrived, the hotel clerk was holding her golden cell phone, while still looking for an identification on it.

After identifying her cell phone, the clerk told her the story of the person who had turned it in. The lady had picked up the phone in the Cathedral, under a bench. She then noticed a hotel key in the phone case slot, which matched her own hotel key. So, when she returned to the hotel after mass, she gave the cell phone to the front desk attendant.

Angel believed having her cell phone returned by someone staying at the same hotel and attending a common church service, was a miracle in action, and she was tempted to share the story with the police officer, after he checked for her phone.

Happiness Mountain by Amal Indi - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Amal Indi will be awarding a $10 Amazon OR Barnes and Noble Gift Card (Winner's Choice!!!) to a randomly drawn winner via Rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Happiness is the most important experience that we as human beings seek throughout our entire lives. Yet there is no one clear definition of happiness in the world today.

How, then, can we expect to be happy to our fullest if we do not know what happiness is?

Everyone has happy moments in life. Suppose you are awake sixteen hours a day after eight hours of sleep—how much time are you truly happy in these sixteen hours?
If you are happy only 20 percent of your day, you will not feel truly happy in life.
If you are happy 50 percent of your day, you will feel like you have an OK life.
If you are happy 60 percent or above, you are living a happy life.
If you are happy 80 percent and above, you’re living a phenomenally happy life.
What if you could change the times that you are not happy to happy moments?

If you want to get better at something, you must study and become proficient in that subject. You do not know what you are missing if you do not learn. The same principle applies to happiness. If you want to be happier, study what happiness is. If happiness is important to you, master it.

By knowing happiness, you can consciously live a happier life. You can minimize the external factors impacting your happiness. You can get happiness under your control.

Irrespective of where you are in life today, by reading this book and following the happiness definition, philosophy, and methodology, you or anyone can live a happier life.

EXCERPT TWO:

I love to compare our minds to computers; computers are a manifestation of humans and parallel our thinking in several ways. When you purchase a new computer, there is a processor, SSD drive, graphics card, operating system, programs, etc. However, installing a reliable virus scanner is left up to the user.

Viruses in our computers can take on many forms, potentially damaging them, including affecting the hardware. A virus can cause the computer to malfunction.

I find this to be the same when looking at our minds. Think of your mind as a computer—you have a processor that I relate to your decision-making power. You are born with a unique human operating system of love, compassion, kindness, acceptance, forgiveness, patience, etc. In addition, there are many programs running at the same time, like your work, cooking dinner, going to the gym, or spending time with a loved one. The programs are your thoughts.

What if a virus were to come along and interfere with these programs, interrupting the flow and hindering you from being the best person you can be? Thought Bugs are much like computer viruses, and can affect your mind.

Thought Bugs can destroy the foundation of your greatness. The majority of people in the world suffer from negative energy created by their minds. This energy created by Thought Bugs will block your potential to lead a happy and fulfilling life. If you do not take control of your Thought Bugs, your mind will suffer from them for your whole life.

The Art of Self-Supervision:

Studying the Link Between Self-Reflection and Self-Care

by Laurie Ponsford-Hill

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Self-Help, Non-Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At last, the field of relational therapy has a technique for the art of self-supervision. Everyone agrees that supervision is essential, however the ultimate goal of supervision is to provide a tool beyond supervision for self-supervision. This book captures the primary ingredients of self-supervision and proves the link between self-reflection and self-care. No matter where you are on your journey as a professional, The Art of Self-Supervision: Studying the link between self-reflection and self-care will lead you to a process to tune into your own expert guidance and a greater capacity to help yourself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
As children, we begin to draw to communicate our experience and make sense of the world. We begin to construct ourselves through art. This section explores how, as adults, we continue to construct ourselves and make sense of the world, and how that process of self-construction is undergirded through art.
Cederboum (2009) discusses that the ego is the ‘I’ of the conscious part of the mind of both internal and external activity, while the self is made up of the inner subconscious part of the psyche. She describes that, with the use of the artistic process, the supervising eye of the superego is removed so that what was once subconscious can become conscious, allowing the individual the ability to begin to self-explore. The use of art allows the individual to attain the insight needed to clearly see the self.
Lowenfeld and Brittain (1975) observe that drawings provide good indications of growth, by depicting the individual’s gradual progression from an egocentric point of view to awareness of self as part of a larger environment. They suggest that a positive self-concept ameliorates the individual’s ability to learn, adding that drawings essentially contain representations of the self and its feelings. The authors discuss Machover (1949), who observed that individuals project their own personalities into their drawings of the self. From the drawings, the individual can reflect on both internal and external dynamics.
Lowenfeld and Brittain (1975) suggest that the act of self-portraiture reflects one’s ability to face oneself. They add that this activity may reveal developmental delays, noting that identifying such delays could greatly facilitate therapeutic changes in self-concept. One explanation for not using self-portraiture, as a tool for assessing developmental delays, is that most of us discontinue drawing between the ages of 12 and 17. Another reason might be that the artist associates drawing with an idealised time in the past or with a difficult time, in which the individual remains stuck (de Botton & Armstrong, 2014).
Adults also bring their child self along with them into adulthood. As Erikson (1980) points out, adults need to be creative, to generate, and to struggle against stagnation (p. 166). Dewdney and Nicholas (2011) add,
Although adults develop qualities of the self and have different qualities and abilities from when they were children, they still have a child self. This child does not fade away with time, but rather plays a powerful role in the formation of the adult self. (p. xvi)
AUTHOR BIO:
Like many therapists, Laurie Ponsford-Hill began as a newly graduated therapist feeling like she could provide her services all day, every day. She realized at a certain point in her career that this was simply not true, and this fueled her determination to understand everything about the need to maintain balance in her life.
Laurie earned a Master of Divinity degree, and directed her work towards pastoral care, later earning a Master of Counselling Psychology degree and furthering her Registrations to that of Psychotherapist, Marriage and Family Therapist, Social Worker, and Art Therapist. Her career led her to a greater understanding about herself and her relationships. Laurie continued to broaden her education and went on to complete a doctoral program in Human Relationships at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary.
Laurie feels fortunate to have attained balance in her work and home life and empathizes with many others engaged in their own personal struggles to attain balance. She has dedicated her career towards helping others on that journey, designing the Self-Supervision program, which was meticulously tested in this clinical research study. The Art of Self-Supervision: Studying the link between self-supervision and self-care chronicles the remarkable findings of this study: that professionals can overcome burnout and improve their health and life balance by focusing on their self-portrait.
Laurie is currently the Clinical Director and Supervisor at The Counselling House, in both London and Woodstock, Ontario, an agency that focuses on the supervision of counselling interns and newly graduated therapists, and their development of self-supervision. Laurie maintains a private consulting practice specializing in the development of maintaining healthy relationships with self, work, home, others, God, and the world.
The Heart Knows What the Mind Cannot See
by Toby Negus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Self-Help, Mind Body Spirit

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
This is a thought-provoking and enlightening exploration of spirituality and perception. The text functions as a guide to self-improvement, with a mixture of autobiographical elements and snippets of universal wisdom. The speaker provides accessible solutions to life’s difficulties, and an outlook of optimism applicable to any circumstance. The illustrations and graphics are thoughtfully chosen, and the interactive textual elements give this work an originality that sets it apart. The speaker’s own experiences and conclusions are at the heart of this fiction, and the first person narrative voice creates a sense of proximity between author and reader. The text describes itself as ‘a journey to the heart’, and this truthful discovery of the self is reflected in the speaker’s revelation of his whole self through the text.
Frequent use of direct address and rhetorical questions promotes an active reading experience, in which the author opens up a dialogue with the reader. The text includes prompts and activities for the reader to engage with and learn from. Encouraging readers to take part in the text is emblematic of their journey to self-fulfillment and love, in which they must take responsibility for actively creating their own happiness.
The speaker depicts his process of enlightenment as a framework for others to emulate, and the format of the text demonstrates the transfer of agency to those who take part in the speaker’s challenges. This work ultimately teaches us that ‘we are the cause of what is’ and thus sheds light on the crucial idea that every individual has the power to create themselves and their world positively.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Real learning is not what we expect.

If we could expect it, it wouldn’t be learning.

I looked in the mirror today and saw more than who I thought I was; within the eyes was a million years of purpose. I saw the depth of the universe and felt its unfaltering love. It was as if I had seen the divine within myself, the truth of who we are. The us that never dies, the custodian of our purpose, the love of our life.

This wasn’t what I expected and was somewhat sobering. There was no blinding light, no sound of trumpets, and no big handshake with an almighty. But it was as profound as if there had been. For it seemed I was touching an eternal part of myself, an authority within that could create my heaven on earth, that was already in heaven on earth! It was a glimpse of something other than the me I thought I was. Its light questioned the lack of self-care and love I held for myself. And its presence would eventually crack and then dissolve my view of what I thought it meant to be human.

Doing a spiritual journey and tackling self-development issues can give many profound perceptions, and I have had my fair share of them. But this was different, this was personal. It was my eyes that were looking at me, something that I could not escape from. It could not be brushed off as a ‘perhaps’ or a nice perception that subsided over time. Its truth seemed to embed itself into my very soul.

GUEST POST:

Reasons Why to Buy My Book

(Taken from Some of the Chapter Titles)

Know thyself for you are the cause of life.

The Mind

The relationship between thinking and emotions.

Feelings are the power that flows along the circuitry of associations I have about what I think goes with what.

Memories:  How the mind uses memories to give life its narrative.

My memories are powerful and will bend the truth of what I see into shapes that fit the comfort of my assumptions.

Beliefs: How the beliefs that we carry constitute our Law of Attraction.

What I think because of what I see depends on the beliefs that are in residence at the time.

The reason why:  The why-we-do-what-we-do is the power behind the act. They are the meaning in a look, the authority behind the words.

The why we do what we do may not always have words but, it will always have a feeling of a meaning.

Will:  How the mind uses willpower to enact the beliefs we carry.

Will is the part of the mind that chooses who I will be from the meaning I have about what I see and think.

The mind can only be conscious according the remit that our feelings give it.

Being Human

Being a human is a phenomenal thing. We have a profound ability to create and give meaning to life; to discern our future, and to direct our consciousness to anything we choose.

Fear

We have always loved; fear is something we have learnt.

The fears that we carry do no honour to our hearts purpose. they close the door to its light and make us deaf to its wisdom.

Vulnerability and Fragility

Vulnerability and fragility, do not confuse the two. One lives in fear, the other in love, and it is only love that can dissolve the illusion of fear.

Learning to Love Yourself

Learning to love yourself is tricky because you have to be soft to the parts of us that make us hard.

Forgiveness

Each day we start again, try with our heart to be the person we love to be. We never stop, never do less than our best, it may be a misinformed best or even a grumpy best, but it was always the best at the time. It’s been the story of our extraordinary life. So, we should forgive ourself for any hurt we have done because of who we thought we should have been, but were not.

Love

Love is the source of all heroic deeds and all the lights of the world, for all great achievements are born from an idea of love. Without love, hope has no home, courage no direction, and fortitude no purpose.

Divining the Divine Self

We are never really far away from the stream of life. It’s only our thought that we are that makes it so.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Say Yes to Life provides you with seven keys to unconditional, abundant living. Each key opens a doorway to experiencing life as a gift.
This book will guide you to the depths of your heart where you long to celebrate life with a wholehearted "Yes!"
You will be led to a place of greater authenticity.
You will be encouraged to take joy in who you are.
Only willingness is needed to embrace yourself with gladness.
With your true Self in the driver's seat and the ego in the back seat, life takes on a new vibrancy.
Now you are present to yourself, to your companions, and the cosmos. The mountaintop appears and beckons you into the fullness that has always been awaiting you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Dear one, as you set forth on the new adventure offered by this book, give yourself permission to discover new facets of your multi-dimensionality. Allow yourself to vibrate on higher levels, closer to the  mountaintop of joy without condition. Allow yourself to hear God say, “You are glorious!” Give yourself permission to say “Yes” whenever Source says “This is who you are.”

Never before has humanity lived in an age so ripe for transformation, happiness, harmony and cooperation.

Never before has the need for transformation been so apparent. Not that the need for transformation has never been so great; rather, the need has never been so visible. The darkness and impurities within the systems in our world are more visible and palpable today because we have entered an era of greater light.

Never before has the world been so prepared for a new arrangement of systems informed by integrity and compassion. Never before have so many people been poised for self-realization and the joy of living from integrity and authenticity.

This book is for those who long for the day when corruption will be replaced by the blossoming of goodness. It is written for those who want to see the flourishing of kindness throughout the world, through systems of commerce, governance, and medicine.

GUEST POST:

One of the Author’s Favorite Scenes:

The characters from Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s classic book The Little Prince show up in Say Yes to Life in nearly every chapter. There are only two characters in his book, the aviator and the little prince.

One of my favorite scenes in Say Yes to Life (there are many favorite scenes) is when the aviator from The Little Prince tells me about his experience carrying the sleeping little prince through the desert in search of water during the night. This is a tender moment from his week in the desert with the young boy. He has a fatherly affection for the little prince when he looks upon his face as he sleeps.

Why is this one of my favorite scenes in Say Yes to Life? Because it shines a light on the beauty and nobility of the aviator. And it shows him falling in love with the child who came into his life a few days previously, the boy who suddenly appeared right after his plane crashed in the desert.

Plus, whenever we reflect on moments from the past, we have the chance to glean wisdom from those moments—to receive the gift offered by the moment. And the aviator is reflecting on that moment in Say Yes to Life as we chat on the front porch of my house.

Say Yes to Life invites the reader to listen to my conversations with Antoine de Saint-Exupery (he is the aviator). The reader listens to him reflect on his experience with the boy on the desert and find nuggets of wisdom. Insights he can take with him in the days following our time of reflecting together.

Some of the conversations I have with the aviator in this book are juxtaposed with quotes from scripture, including A Course of Love, a book some think of as the sequel to A Course in Miracles. This adds to the richness of our conversation and time of reflection upon that profound week on the desert with the young innocent little prince.

For example, one of the passages from A Course of Love that is quoted in the context of one of our conversations is from the opening pages of A Course of Love:

The mind so hates to be confused, to be open, to remain open, and to not know. It desires anchors to hold it in one spot and held there suffers the pounding of the sea of change, resists the current, fortifies itself against the storm. The mind will return always to where it feels safe and sure of itself and so it goes nowhere and sees not transformation, or creation, of the new horizon that would defy its reality.[C:1.4]

This passage shines a light on the contrast between the young boy and the aviator. The aviator experiences the mind’s desire for anchors “to hold it in one spot.” His mind returns “to where it feels safe and sure of itself” when the little prince asks questions that are not helpful to him in his efforts to fix the plane—and fixing the plane is his primary concern for the supply of water is limited.

The little prince, when he interrupts the aviator, is not snagged by the mind’s desire for anchors. His mind is not in the driver’s seat. His mind and heart have a harmonious relationship in those moments.

Let me add one more note to this blog. I know not everyone has read The Little Prince. But anyone can pick up Say Yes to Life and enjoy the scenes where the aviator and I are discussing his week on the desert. The scenes from The Little Prince are quoted in my book, with permission.
