Prophet's Debt

by Robert Creekmore

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Dark Contemporary Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

At fourteen, Naomi Pace knows she loves her best friend, Tiffany. During the Perseid meteor shower of summer 1993, she finds out Tiffany feels the same, just as they’re outed.

Naomi is sent away to a conversion program in the remote Appalachians of North Carolina, knowing nothing of the horrors that await or the strength they will catalyze.

Escaping into the frigid wilderness, she forges her own destiny. Trapped in hiding, Naomi fights to conquer fear and find her way back to Tiffany.

Taking bloody vengeance to end a cult that tortures and murders children seems impossible, but so is having the guidance of a mythic creature of strength and violence.

Those who hurt Naomi as a girl will come to fear the woman she has become and the path she will tread to find revenge, safety, and Tiffany.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Moving away, Lesley says in verbal self-defense, “Wait until your father finds out.”
That lands like a tranquilizer dart on a bear. I shift from rage to fear. I’ve done something wholly unforgivable, broken another girl’s arm because she called out my sin. That’s how it will be seen regardless of how I feel about what they call “sin.” Until just now, I was having the most exciting night of my young life. I didn’t feel sin, I felt bonding. I felt the comfort of having someone I love more than anyone else physically close. For those few hours, I thought my life could be like this, but as I watch Lesley stumble away sobbing, it becomes apparent that I was wrong.
Lesley’s car makes a buzzing noise as she zooms away. Tiffany’s eyes are wide when we meet gazes.
“I’ll get the bag,” I say.
I stuff the blankets, canteen, chips, and flashlight back in, leaving the star map behind on the same spot where we had just laid.
“You broke her arm. I can’t believe you actually broke her arm,” Tiffany says, stuttering from fear.
“She was hurting you.”
“But you didn’t have to break her arm.”
“No, I didn’t. I wanted to.”
Tiffany doesn’t seem as offput by this as I expected.
“I love you,” she says.
“Same,” I reply.
I throw the backpack on and reach down to give Tiffany a hand up.
“We have to go somewhere else,” I say, as she rises to her feet.
“Where?”
“Just not here is all I know.”
GUEST POST:
Music That Inspired Prophet’s Debt
~ The Gits, Second Skin
This one is a no-brainer to start with since the book is dedicated to the memory of the band's lead singer, Mia Zapata. The Gits were a fantastic punk group that was active from 1986 to 1993. They are probably one of my favorite bands. I wasn’t around to see them since I wasn’t old enough to go to shows. I wouldn’t find them until the late nineties. Like many bands who began in that era, such as NOFX, The Bad Brains, or Bouncing Souls, I think The Gits would still be around today. The surviving members are still active in the music scene. Unfortunately, Mia was raped and murdered while walking home on July, 7th 1993. She was only 27. Her murderer remained free for another decade. He died in prison last year. Prophet’s Debt is about a woman who takes revenge on those who raped and tortured her when she was a girl. So, I think it’s fitting that someone who fell to such a fate and has been such an influence on me, should sit first and foremost on this list.
~ Tilt, Libel
Tilt is another punk band from the nineties that was fronted by a woman. Her stage name is Cinder Block. She’s still active with other bands. I believe she has one of the best voices of any punk lead vocalist, ever. I met her when I was nineteen. I was so star-struck that I could barely get a word out. All I could do was shake her hand and say, ‘thank you.’ Libel is about ignorant liars. It makes me think of the cult, based on Evangelical Christianity, that I created for Prophet’s Debt.
~ Boysetsfire, Unspoken Request
Boysetsfire is a punk band that’s been around for nearly thirty years. I first heard this song at one of their shows. It’s about the residual psychological trauma stemming from rape. Such a feminist sentiment from a band made up entirely of men isn’t unheard of in the punk scene, but this one really got me. It was in a small club and I could see backstage. There, just in my line of sight, was a woman who was friends with the band. While they played, she burst into tears. I’ll never forget that. It showed me what men can do if they get together against the toxic behavior of other men by standing up to them, verbally or physically if need be.
        ~ Doll Skin, Daughter
I only became aware of Doll Skin last fall when I saw them open for Anti-Flag and Bad Cop Bad Cop, both of whom you should check out. This song reminds me of my protagonist, Naomi, because of the lyrics,
“No matter what she keeps on breathing,
 why can’t I, why can’t I?”
Naomi is a survivor. Against all odds, she keeps on breathing. And so can you.
~ Bronski Beat, Small Town Boy
I choose this because it’s a song about a young person who is gay fleeing from home. This was released in 1984: way ahead of its time. Naomi Pace is a gay woman, which is why she is sent away because it was thought that she could be converted to straight. That’s bullshit, of course. The specific lyrics that inspired me are:
“But the answers you seek will never be found at home
The love that you need will never be found at home”
Naomi’s family rejected her, so she built her own, which is what a lot of young people who are disowned do. They’re better off for it, hatred doesn’t belong in families.
AUTHOR BIO:
Robert Creekmore is from a rural farming community in Eastern North Carolina.
He attended North Carolina State where he studied psychology. While at university, he was active at the student radio station. There, he fell in love with punk rock and its ethos.
Robert acquired several teaching licenses in special education. He was an autism specialist in Raleigh for eight years. He then taught for four years in a small mountain community in western North Carolina.
During his time in the mountains, he lived with his wife Juliana in a remote primitive cabin built in 1875. While there, he grew most of his own food, raised chickens, worked on a cattle farm, as well as participated in subsistence hunting and fishing.
Eventually, the couple moved back to the small farming community where Robert was raised.
Robert’s first novel Afiri, is a science fiction love letter to his childhood hero Carl Sagan. It was nominated for a Manly Wade Wellman award in 2016.
Robert’s second novel is the first in a trilogy of books. Annoyed with the stereotype of the southeastern United States as a monolith of ignorance and hatred, he wanted to bring forth characters from the region who are queer and autistic. They now hold up a disinfecting light to the hatred of the region’s past and to those who still yearn for a return to ways and ideas that should have long ago perished.
EXCERPT TWO:
He ran to the house, struggling through the wind that sought to push him over, to deter him from entering that house.
“No, Gerri,” the chaperone hollered. “Do NOT go in there!”
But Gerri quickened his pace.
The chaperone was in front of him.
He turned to go around him.
The chaperone was in front of him.
He jerked to the left, running at max speed.
The chaperone was in front of him, pushed Gerri to the ground. Picked him up and clasped Gerri’s shoulders with an iron hand.
“It’s not allowed, Gerri.”
“What’re you talking about? I just want to go home.”
The chaperone laughed. He started pacing, circling Gerri with his hand on Gerri’s shoulder.
“What do you think, Gerri, hang yourself and you get to go back home? No, no, no, Gerri. Look around you. You’re not even close to home!”
“What? That can’t be!”
“Between worlds, Gerri! That’s where you are. What’s in that house is nothing. Nothing more than the slither of energy you left, the portal of death with the stink of fear. You’re not welcome there. Not welcome at all.” He slipped his hand off Geri’s shoulder. Stepped an arm’s length away from him.
“No, no, no, this can’t be! This can’t be.”
“Oh, yes, Gerri, it can, and it is.”
The chaperone paused.
“It’s best that you come with me Gerri.”
Gerri screamed, “Where did I go wrong?”
The chaperone stiffened.
He turned to the house and paused.
Why You Should Read My Book
Honestly I find it strange to list reasons why people should read my book. In the back of my mind I’ve always got that thought roaming through my head, “Because it’s the greatest book ever.” I’m sure I share this sentiment with the rest of my cohorts in the writing world. I don’t know any writer that would say anything less. We write for the pure joy of writing and creating worlds and characters that we hope will resonate with the reader and keep them coming back for more, but it’s the joy of writing, the creative process that gets our goat and satisfies our inner most desires. Essentially every writer tosses our souls into the wind to be judged while crossing our fingers that the book will be met with positive reviews and great sales to keep the writing dream alive.
So, why should anyone read my book? My answer is simple: complete satisfaction that leaves the reader feeling a calm stillness and appreciation. The story includes multiple themes and subtle nuances with an inspirational message. I’d categorize the book as mainstream (hopefully one day it’ll reach that mark) containing a unique enduring love story between husband and wife as they race against time to save their marriage, family and the world at large. I believe in making the reader think, to see alternative perspectives and ultimately an understanding of the universe and connection between all within. Most of us love a great story filled with inspiration, darkness, love, heart and soul. I wanted to write a story that was dedicated to the enduring nature of love between two human beings, packed with emotion and enrichment of the soul. I do believe I’ve accomplished this task.
I’m a hopeless romantic, in love with the concept of love and the enduring quality of love in the face of severe adversity. My wife and I attended an Andrea Bocelli concert a few years ago. I remember listening during this concert and experiencing a sensation that drove my heart to a place of pure peace through music, the artistic ability to come away from the concert a truly better person for having attended the show. Like so many songs and stories in human history there are those that stand out, those that capture a moment in time and drive us to contemplate what we’ve witnessed, felt and experienced as a reflection of our hearts and lives.
In the interim my wife and I were experiencing a fall from grace, a change in our lives that had a profound effect on our marriage and our family. We are psychotherapists and our business had taken a hit and new direction that ultimately led to its downfall. But we are people who always take into account the spiritual reasons for what human beings endure, looking within for answers and above for solutions. It was through my wife and her conviction to the love we shared and our family that I was able to wake up and begin anew. Understand that what was happening was meant to be, I’ve always been a writer but never went for it and made it my own, my life and my passion and purpose. I denied who I was and paid a price for it. Spiritually speaking, when we deny who we are and hate who we’ve become the universe sends us into a spiral that seems will never end, forcing change on all levels. What we are meant to be in this world is sometimes made apparent through the trials and tribulations life throws at us. In retrospect, what happened was the best of all spiritual experiences; sometimes we have to lose everything to be free. I’ve never been happier.
As I stated above the story includes multiple nuances and subtle themes. Mainly, the connection of all things in the universe and the effect our choices and actions have on the larger world, also known as the butterfly effect. After the Las Vegas shooting, I heard a lot about Gods plan and a lot of blaming God for allowing such an action. I’ve always been intrigued over this thought process, for is there not an understanding that evil has a plan too, using influence to drive a cosmic wedge between the human heart and the conviction of love and endurance of good. A peaceful person seeks and finds balance between light and dark, such is the nature of the universe, always seeking and striving for balance. Any tip too far in either direction and the universe forces change to balance out the equation. But both good and evil seek to be fed, it is their nature. When we see with larger eyes what is happening in this world we can seek and find peaceful hearts under the impact of self-love, humble beginnings, balance and personal essence.
God, devil, Satan, karma, consequence, to me these words are just semantics used to explain an eternal struggle to find balance. As a psychotherapist my goal is to teach patients how to cope on their own with life’s concerns, as a spiritual healer my goals is the same only with a slightly different perspective, finding balance and meaning in life with the notion that the meaning of life is simply just to live, so live beautifully and joyfully, happily and peacefully and do those things that drive these emotions. Maintain focus on freedom, love and peace and you will have it. We can allow ourselves to be consumed with hate and darkness or find peace within joy and balance within the outside world and ourselves.
So what is the reason to read my book? A spiritually fit, soul enriching, thought provoking contemplative experience driven to allow appreciation of who we are, what we have and the people most important in our lives, wrapped within a story that includes thrills, chills, alternative dimensions, an understanding of the larger nature of the universe and the impact that love has on all of us. Or, in the simplest terms, an excellently written, sweet little ditty about the enduring nature and power of love.
Twisted Tales of Deceit
by P.D. Alleva
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Dark Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Twisted Tales of Deceit is the first installment in the Beyond the Chamber Door series. Featuring three tales (The Calculated Desolation of Hope, Somnium, & Knickerbocker) chronicling an evil influence on the human psyche, tipping our hands into the engagement of what is most horrifying; our dastardly, human deeds steeped in self-destruction, desperation and the loss of dreams. Metaphorical warnings have been constructed inside these pages to reflect the everyday signs the universe provides under the guise of reflective light that return to mirror how evil tempts our hand so to not fulfill the dreams of the soul. Our doubts, our sadness, our indecisions rooted in fear, are toiled with by the presence of imps bent on hatred and in need of our nightmares to survive. Here, the human spirit is dripped like honey, tasteful to the dark corridors of human malevolence and taken advantage by the corrupt and seamlessly endless parade other worldly dimensions have on what should be our earthly utopia, creating rage in the cosmic hedonism of jealousy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

“Jim?” Charlie said. “Jim are you there?”

He stared into the mirror, hoping Jimmy would talk. But the room was too bright, and Charlie remembered that Jimmy liked the dark, so he turned off the light, lit a candle which he placed on the sink by the mirror, which started to waver, like a stone dropped into water causes circular ripples.

“There you are,” Charlie said and smiled. “I was beginning to think you wouldn’t come.”

“Charlie,” Jimmy said. “I grow tired of you. You bore me too much with these dreams of yours you never do anything about. Wouldn’t it be better if you forgot about it? Went and took up a trade career, something where you don’t have to dream so big? I don’t want you to have to be disappointed.”

“But we’ve come so far, we can’t give up just yet.”

Jimmy touched his forehead shaking his head. “I just don’t know Charlie, you don’t seem like you want it enough. Like you’d do anything to have it. Don’t you know that dreams remain dreams unless you do something to capture them in your hand.”

“But I do…I write and read all the time, go to classes like I’m supposed to…”

“Class? Charlie really, schools where you hide not venture forth. Oh Lord Charlie you’re such a fool. Such a damn fool! I feel I’m wasting my time with you…and it’s been such a long road helping you.”

“But the lady,” Charlie said. “Remember the lady, the fortune teller, she said I’d make it if I passed the test…”

GUEST POST:

Who Inspired Your Love for Books?

Thank you Fabulous and Brunette for your support of Indie Authors.

I’ve been very fortunate to have several people influence my love of books and writing, including teachers and family. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Adams fostered my love for reading with Peter Pan, and would always read over stories I was writing at that time. Like all writers, I have a vivid imagination. I wrote a story about a hamster that escapes inside a school and becomes a monster over the years, searching for its owner, who ultimately tames the savage beast years later. What can you expect from a second grader?

I was a space cadet growing up, always with a book in my hand or writing another story. I wrote my first novel in sixth grade, a medieval adventure where a group of misfits set out on a journey to find the “book of life,” encountering monsters along the way to save the world from darkness. Wish I still had that book, as its always interesting to read through old stories and poems as an indication as where you’ve been and how far you’ve come. Naturally, the “Lord of the Rings,” played a huge role during the middle grade years, with an equal influence of Edgar Allen Poe and Washington Irving.

I grew up in Westchester County New York, where The Legend of Sleepy Hollow was not only required reading but also celebrated during Autumn months with trips to Sleepy Hollow and Washington Irving’s home in Tarrytown. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow had a profound effect, even still to this day. Maybe it’s the lore or the deceit involved, but I loved the story so much that I wrote a re-imagining of the tale in my book, Twisted Tales of Deceit, titled “Knickerbocker”, paying homage to Washington Irving’s original story while adding a modern twist with modern themes.

Growing up, my mother would recommend books for me to read. She knew my style and would recommend sci-fi classics. I do believe it is so important to teach by example. My mother was a Danielle Steele fan, erotica, too, with those book covers featuring Fabio. I always made fun of the “cheesy sex novels” she would read by the dozens throughout the years. But as she read I did too, often exchanging book ideas and plots. She took a great interest in what I was reading, and I would often sit with her providing plot details on books and stories I was writing. I would engage in Edgar Allen Poe classics, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Frankenstein, and during my late teens and early twenties, Ernest Hemingway became my favorite author after reading In Our Time and The Sun Also Rises. My family nicknamed me “Hemingway,” a nickname I truly love and hope to live up to someday. I call my youngest child, Papa, Hemingway’s nickname throughout his life. Papa is definitely a chip off the old block, creative with drawing and story telling. I love it when he’s creating a new picture and telling stories he’s made up with interesting characters. Makes me proud to have this creative bond with him.

I’ve always leaned toward classic literature. My cousin, Vanessa, played a large part in this intrigue and adoration, and for my love of writing. When we were kids she always came to my rescue anytime my older brother gave me lip about writing. Yes, he could be torturous but Vanessa, being older than he was (tougher too) always put him in his place. Vanessa and I continue to share our love for literature, she’s worked in the publishing field in several different capacities for the past twenty-eight years with Harper Collins and Penguin Random House. She is currently a freelance editor, helping me considerably with editing my current books.

Throughout my twenties I delved into horror and a reading list that included Stephen King, Clive Barker and Dean Koontz to name but a few. Oddly enough during this time, I was also into Nicholas Sparks, The Celestine Prophecy, The Bridges of Madison County and books on philosophy and religion. I always have a book to read. If you were to see me, I’ve got a book somewhere; either on me or within arms reach. Currently reading Dan Brown’s, Inferno, Hemingway’s Islands in the Stream and HP Lovecraft’s The Dunwich Horror and Others. I finally read Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead last year. Don’t’ know why I put this one off for so long since Atlas Shrugged was one of my all-time favorites in high school, along with Daphne Du Maurier’s Rebecca and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein (still my favorite book). The Fountainhead kept me spellbound, to the point that a character I’m writing about now is loosely based on Ayn Rand. The book, titled Golem, is about a 1940’s socialite whose male sculpture comes to life after a breakup with the love of her life and will be either book three or four in the series. Next up on my TBR list is A Dress the Color of the Sky, The Black Heart of the Station, and Echo Vol 1: Approaching Shatter. I like to mix up the reading list with indie and classic authors.

I believe that literature should reflect the human condition and the society we live in; providing lessons and warnings on the connection of all things in the universe, the human ego and sin with a deliverance from darkness into the light through love and connection or vice versa. I consider myself a literary author with stories that include dark themes, metaphysical dilemmas and romance.
