“Oh.” Her heart slammed against her chest. She hadn’t expected that news. Old feelings of rejection welled up inside her. She struggled to keep her composure. A girl had her pride.
“Jack is going to tell you.” Ava’s voice softened as she continued. “But I thought you might want to be prepared when you see him. I didn’t want you to be blindsided by the news. He’s leaving the military. Jack has offered him a job as a commercial project manager at Rutledge’s. Donovan will be looking for a place to live, and Jack has agreed to show him some properties.”
Ava was silent for a moment. “I think Jack is hoping you’ve forgiven Donovan.”
Emma grimaced. Clearly Jack had told Ava about her childhood obsession with Donovan. No one appreciates the messenger. So true. I’ve gotten over him. Why can’t everyone else move on too? Small town life.
