Summer of Georgie

GENRE:  ChickLit

BLURB:

Deep into her 40s with a lackluster career, Georgie wonders how she became so...underwhelming. If she’s not battling her micromanaging boss and egotistical CEO, she’s trying to quiet her inner voice, the one whispering that she hasn’t lived up to the cool, funny and creative person she used to be.

When she's fired for finally pushing back on her CEO’s questionable business practices, Georgie – with the support of her husband and book club friends– uses her free summer to rekindle latent talents and redefine success. But just as she figures out what’s next, an unexpected hurdle threatens to turn her summer of opportunity into a zero-sum disaster.

Summer of Georgie is a fresh and likably snarky take on the “middle age do-over,” with an authentic portrayal of friendship, marriage, motherhood, and that inner critic inside us all.

EXCERPT THREE:

“Jesus Christ, these places are all the same,” she says, shaking her head. “Why are we here again?”

“Because it’s 25.7 miles from my house, and no one cares that I’m a sweaty mess,” I say.

Jules continues her rant. “Nothing but sports on TV, crap wine behind the bar, a bunch of jerseys illegibly signed in Sharpie, and some version of testosterone rock on the speakers. Too damn loud, too.”

I laugh. “You might be painting our statewide dining establishments with a bit of a broad brush there, Jules.”

“I’m not, but who cares?” says Jules. “Tell us about the ride.”

“It wasn’t as bad as–hang on,” Tess whips around to face me. “Did you say 25 point seven? Bitch!” I grin at her.

As Tess fills our friends in on the literal ups and downs of our day, Gilda begins to push in.

Is it that broad of a brush, really? Even if you took down the cheesy jerseys and brought in some decent wine, there would still be the same sports on TV, and the same generic rock playing too loudly to have a conversation. They’re all catering to the same people. Dudes.

My mind is rushing.

What would one designed for women look like?

Images flood in. Too many to process. I look around at my friends, and slap the table.

“Oh my God, you guys. I need to open a bar.”

GUEST POST:

Judge My Book by Its Cover!

Don’t judge a book by its cover, they say.

As a lifelong reader and first-time author, I’m here to beg you to – please – judge my book by its cover!

Since publishing my first novel, Summer of Georgie, and spending the last few months spreading the word, the most consistent reaction I’ve received is something along the lines of:

OMG! I love this cover!

Me too, reader. Me too. And thanks to the amazing cover artist I hired from Reedsy.com  – Ashley Siebels – the process was far easier than I had anticipated. The book itself had taken two years to write, and another year to edit, rewrite and polish. When I was finally ready to share it with the world, I froze. How could I convey what this book meant to me in a single image?

I wanted the cover to have a summertime feel, but the typical symbols of summer, like beaches or hammocks, weren’t really part of the story. The story is the journey of personal growth that my main character undertakes, but I didn’t want to try to portray her on the cover. Rather, I wanted the women who read the book to see themselves as Georgie. I wanted to hint at her business venture, but not give the real angle behind it away.

So where did that leave me?

Fortunately, I was in Ashley’s capable hands. She calmly took the many cover examples I sent, with frenetic notes of “I like this but not that, and maybe instead of butterflies there are post-its??” and delivered the cover of my dreams. The colors, the script, the nods to the three things that Georgie’s summer centers on – her bike, a particular bar, and people – all came together to evoke the essence of my novel.

So yes, please do judge my book by its cover!
