Soft swirls of light rose, dissipating as they spoke.

“The others are capable, but they need our help. Peace will not come easily. We must give them strength.”

“Druth will destroy our home. He will hurt the gifted ones if the nectar finds him.”

“They will not survive him.”

“The others must seek the will for survival. They   must understand their own power.”

A transient suspension held the beings in the preserve. Faint flecks of light dotted the landscape.

“In these two worlds, our ideas converge, yet collide.”

“He must be stopped!”

“It is true.”

“Naculea must endure.”

“It is chosen.”

Now resting upon the succulent, running rich with the life-giving nectar, the beings absorbed its energy, glowing as bright as the sun.

Thirst became a distant need yet again.

“We must warn… the one.”

“The one who sees.”

“The one who sees and hears much.”

“It is the only way.”

Final clicks faded into silence.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is fun, exciting, entertaining, and jam packed full of thrilling action scenes!!

Many young readers are sure to quickly connect with the brave superhero’s and become captivated by the fast, daring, action fighting; enticed by the curious, mysterious, and thrilling adventure; inspired by the courageous acts of goodwill; and enriched with valuable life lessons.  This book has so much to offer, it’s sure to be a favorite!!

While this book clearly screams for the young adult reader and undoubtedly would offer strong appeal to the 11-18-year-old age range; it also found to be quiet an intriguing read for this “older” adult reader.  While I frequently enjoy reading books that cross age lines and bend genre barriers, as to me, a good book is often more about the author’s storytelling ability and their skills in keeping the reader fully engaged, regardless of what the typical targeted reader audience is.  I am happy to acknowledge that this book did just that with its cleverly crafted story lines, intriguing plot points, and enjoyable characters.

I was quickly swept away by the story line concept of five high-schooler aged boys acquiring unique sensory superpowers and teaming up together to make a difference in their community.  This book felt like a local, hometown version of all the best superhero’s, rolled into a more somewhat convincing, down-to-earth, less glitz and glam, champion of the people kind of story.  The real underdogs that you’d root for and cheer on their success.

Without a doubt, this book radiated encouraging, inspirational, and motivational messages that expressed real heroism, self-discovery, and positive images while also delivering important life lessons that are sure to resonate with young readers.

I enjoyed that the author gave uniquely distinctive character traits to each of the boys, further promoting inclusivity, and allowing a vast array of readers to easily relate with at least one character.  However, I feel there was still much to be desired in the character’s development and story arcs.  While these characters were likable, I really wanted more from them.  Perhaps because this book features a larger cast of main characters there was less room for each of these characters to fully grow and reach their potential?  Perhaps because these characters are high school students that level of openness to express their feelings isn’t fully established yet?  Perhaps because the main characters are boys, and they are less likely to speak candidly and share their deep inner thoughts and emotions?  I think the author only barely scratched the surface with these characters and could easily add-in more personal, candid traits to create stronger, multidimensional characters.

There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming but will enjoy watching unfold!!

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!!  I think all action-adventure, urban fantasy, mystery, and thriller book fans – especially readers that fall into the MG, YA, NA, and adult fiction genres will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
