Partner Pursuit

by Kathy Strobos

GENRE:  Women's Fiction with Romance/Rom Com/Chick Lit

When a workaholic lawyer meets a fun-loving music marketing executive for opposites attract, friends-to-lovers adventures, which partnership will she choose?

Workaholic lawyer Audrey Willems is not going to take any chances with her bid to become a partner at her New York law firm—especially with only six months until the decision.

Until she bumps into Jake—her new neighbor.

Jake is a fun-loving music marketing executive who might just be The One.

He’s funny, caring, supportive—and able to kill water bugs in the bathroom.

But Jake will never date a woman married to her job. His father was a workaholic lawyer who never had time for family.

And she’s just got the case of a lifetime—the one she needs to win to make partner.  Working 24/7 at the office may not even be enough hours to pull off a victory.

If only she had not met him now.

Audrey is determined to prove that she can juggle work and romance—even if managing court cases, candlelit dinners, and bike rides around Manhattan is a lot harder than it looks.  She keeps canceling dates for yet another case crisis.

But when making partner is like a game of musical chairs and the last seat is a business-class alone, which partnership will she choose?

She left the bathroom, and at the door to the garden, she ran into Jake. He put his arm around her. The warmth of the physical contact surprised her. He smelled like fresh cotton laundry with a slight whiff of beer. He leaned in, one hand on the door next to her, her back against the sliding glass door. She held his gaze, her body buzzing. Enveloped in their own little bubble, the party noise receded into the background. It was just him and her.

“So, surprise, surprise, a woman actually asked me where the bathroom was,” he said in a low voice.

“And you wanted to share that with me?”

“I thought you might have had something to do with that.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.” He laughed. “You totally did. You’re so not good at keeping secrets.”

She laughed. “Maybe. I might’ve.”

“Are you sure you’re a corporate lawyer?”

“Positive. Why?”

“You seem too mischievous.” He brushed a strand of hair away from her face. His touch left a warm tingle. Her brain blanked.

Describe Your Book Cover and How It Came About:

This is such a fun question to answer. I am so happy with my book cover, which was created by Lucy of Cover Ever After.

Here was my brief on the imagery for the front cover:

§  The two characters and some NY imagery.

§  I want a feel-good happy feeling.

§  They have a date where they bicycle along the Hudson River. Initially, I thought of a potential cover illustration as them on a bike for two with the wheels going in opposite directions (to show the conflict), but they are looking back at each other flirtatiously.

§  He has a golden retriever named Biscuit. His niece named his dog after the book series.

§  Even though she is a workaholic lawyer, she is still mischievous and that's what attracts him to her. She plays a practical joke on him soon after they meet.

§  The title is Partner Pursuit because she's trying to make law firm partner while also finding a partner.

§  Hope you have fun!

Here is my description of the characters for Lucy:

§  Audrey: workaholic Wall Street lawyer, caramel blond hair - a bit below the shoulders, blue eyes, attractive, around 33, 5'7", mischievous,

§  Jake: light brown wavy hair, blue eyes, fit, attractive, fun-loving music marketing executive, trendy, self-confident, also around 33, 6'2

§  If she has a briefcase, he has a messenger shoulder bag.

Lucy came up with the colors and the whole cover concept. She gave me three different covers to choose from. She put them on a bike going up an incline to show the uphill struggle. I loved that. I added the briefcase on the back of the bicycle. At first, I also added a messenger bag to Jake on the bike, but then it looked too busy. I then asked Lucy for the couple to be on the spine as well because I love that imagery when the book is in your bookcase. She added the messenger bag there, which I thought was great.

All in all, I couldn’t be happier with my cover. It was a very fun process.
