MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is such a sweet, adorable, charming children’s bedtime story!!

I absolutely LOVED the beautiful, fun, bright, vibrant, energetic illustrations that brought this story to life!!  The colors are gorgeous and are sure to excite and stimulate young readers!!

I really enjoyed that the author used creative alliterations which were not only entertaining, but they also strongly help develop reading skills!!  Plus, these made for such fun and silly character names, like Crazy Cousin Cricket, Mighty Minnow, and Twinkles the Tadpole!!

I also loved the outdoors-y theme which provided a refreshing, invigorating, and energizing ambience!!  Plus, this element is great for kids as it is sure to encourage, motivate, and spark a passion and curiosity to explore the great outdoors and connect with nature.

In addition, I really enjoyed learning about the inspiration behind this book, the setting, and the characters.  At the very end of the book, the author recognizes his favorite person, Grandpa Carl, who is also the muse of the book’s main character, Swogg the Silly Frog.  In a beautiful ode the author mentions Skunk Hollow, Wisconsin, as a secret hideaway shared between his Grandpa Carl and loved ones, which is also the inspiration for the book’s setting.  It’s quite evident and understandably so that this book holds special meaning to the author and his family.  This touching tribute also includes a family photo at their beloved Skunk Hollow haven.

Although this book is not necessarily jam packed full of important moral dilemma lessons like most children’s books are, it is still a fun, breezy, enjoyable read, which are definitely the type of books that are perfect for bedtime!!  Even more so, this book is clocking in at only 14 pages of story, and 20 total pages front to back.  Like I always say, short stories make the best bedtime stories lol!!

As far as the substance comment, Swogg, does contemplate between telling others to be quiet so he can sleep or choosing to ignore their noises or move to another spot.  This technically can be seen as a dilemma, not a moral or ethical dilemma though since all three options don’t lead to an unpleasant problem or situation where you don’t know which way to turn to and in by making that decision you may compromise or violate a moral or ethical principle.  So, I would probably classify this theme in the problem-solving category as Swogg defines the problem, generates possible solutions, evaluates each solution, and then implements chosen solution. Problem-solving principles are of course, still very important and valuable for kids to learn!!

However, I had just a couple drawbacks from this book.  I wasn't quite sure about all the characters having such long, feminine eyelashes, which seemed a bit odd.  Don't get me wrong, they are pretty.  It just didn't seem fitting for everyone to have them.  Also, it seemed strange that the some of the pages had white font and others had black font.  There didn't seem to be any pattern or system to this, just randomly changed throughout the story, which was a bit distracting.

As it should be since this is a children’s book, this book is “G” rated as there is no swearing, no violence, no adult situations, and no sexual content.

The author has mentioned that he plans to write an entire book series around Swogg the Silly Frog and his ten best friends.  This is the first book in that series and what seems to be a very promising start!!  I look forward to seeing Swogg and his friends are up to next!!

I’d also like to mention, that the author stated that sales profits from this book will be donated to CORAL – Coral Reef Alliance and WWF World Wildlife Foundation.  I absolutely LOVE when author’s use their platform to not only bring attention to such important organizations, but also help support them!!  Thank you, Grump C, for doing just that!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all children and young readers will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!  Plus, don’t forget your purchase helps fund two crucial organizations!! #win-win
