EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
The
wait wasn’t long, actually. Just a few minutes after 9:00 p.m., a dark sedan
with several people inside the vehicle rolled slowly through the community, the
headlights on high beam.
“We’ve
got something,” the man in the black fedora said.
Rocky
eased out of the car as his boss slid out from the passenger side.
“Let’s
move across the street before they come back, Rocky. If I’m not mistaken,
they’ll hit that side of the street.”
“That’s
what Mouse told me, Boss,” Rocky agreed. “They seem interested in the property
over there for some reason.”
“Maybe
we’ll find out something tonight, Rocky. Let’s try to take one alive, and let
the others run, if they decide it’s in their best interest.”
“In
here, Boss,” Rocky said suddenly. “The building on the left belongs to Mrs.
Akiko; the building on the right was where they killed the couple. I think
these lots are most important to them.”
“My
guess is they are after the whole block, Rocky. I want Kay to see if anyone has
filed for the Delecartes’ building now that the owners are dead. The
intimidation is happening with every storeowner on the block. Get rid of a few,
and the rest will go is their motto. That’s why I suspected there might be more
trouble here tonight. Someone is in a hurry, and they don’t care how rough the
hired hands play.”
“I
hear a motor, Boss.”
“But
no lights this time, Rocky. Watch for anyone leaving the vehicle when it stops.
I’ve got a funny feeling about this.”
Sure
enough, when the vehicle came closer, it slowed next to Sally Akiko’s shop and
silently braked to a stop. Two men got out of the back seat while another two
hoods got out of the front and stood by the doors. Shiny metal glinted from
their fists as rods were pulled from shoulder holsters.

AUTHOR BIO:
Tom
was a voracious reader from an early age, beginning with comic books at age
seven and reading novels by age 10 or 11. He has never stopped reading for
pleasure, though his interest in genres have often switched from SF to western,
to hardboiled detectives, the classics, and back to science fiction again over
the years. In his own writing, readers will often find something about his love
of zoology, whether insects, reptiles, or saber-tooth cats. Tom had a stroke in
March 2002. Now retired, he and his wife devote their time to keeping Tom’s
books in print, as well as helping promote other writers.
They
settled in Tom’s hometown of Seymour, Texas, home of the Whiteside Museum of
Natural History, and the red-bed digs near the town where Permian fossils have
been discovered for over a hundred years. A 250-million-year-old amphibian, the
Seymouria was discovered in the red-beds and is named after Seymour. One of the
main predators of the Permian was a large finback reptile called a Dimetrodon,
and a statue is displayed outside the museum. Several of Tom’s books are on
hand in the museum. With over 80 books in print that he has contributed to, Tom
has slowed down now. He is still writing children’s stories while promoting his
books still on the market. Plus, he still has hopes of one day seeing his short
novel, Pangaea: Eden’s Planet, made into a film.
Note: The Man in the Black Fedora was released September 26,
2019. Tom passed away on November 5, 2019. The book will remain in print
posthumously for the length of the contract.
