The Nevada
Escapists' Club
by Jane Lark

GENRE: Women's
Fiction: Thriller

BLURB:
Zac
senses the connection he has with the single stranger within minutes of their
meeting. She, like him, sought a place to escape. But she isn't running
anymore. He is. Ali falls into a holiday affair with a troubled young man. She
would never choose a man like him if she was at home. So what will happen when
the Las Vegas fantasy is over and her sunglasses tinted view of the world
returns to reality? She is supposed to forget everything. It was meant to stop
there...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The
odds of him being a murderer were virtually none. The odds of him being a
rapist… I’d make sure we stayed in public places. A thief or a trickster… They
were real risks but if I did not leave my purse lying around in his presence,
so what. And even if he took my purse most of my cash and cards were in the
safe in my room.
If
we went out I could have fun and forget about Joseph and the past.
‘Yes.’
I took my first step into the proper spirit of Las Vegas; that was why I had
come here, not to hide in my room or aimlessly walk about shops. ‘Thank you, I
would like to meet up. Where?’
‘I’ll
meet you outside the nearest Walgreens twenty minutes after I have left the
table. OK?’ The statement was made with his head down and slightly turned.
‘OK.’
‘End
of conversation.’
The
waitress arrived with my drink as couples sat either side of me filling up all
the chairs.
He
was less flirtatious with men at the table, but he still smiled a lot and spoke
to me at times in a way that brought me into the couples’ conversation.
Spending an evening with him would make Las Vegas exciting. Nothing would be
exciting on my own.
The
woman arrived to replace Zac.
I
stood up even before he had left. ‘I think that’s my signal to give up.’ I had
lost a hundred and sixty dollars. I walked away.
I
cashed in the chips I had left then went to the bar and bought a gin and tonic
that I could drink quickly.
For
a woman who a week ago had been a successful, level-headed lawyer, I had lost
my mind. Every bit of evidence, if I read it in a client’s file, would say, do
not do this. But I had come here to do what I wouldn’t normally do and I had
come here to fight fear.
The
gin and tonic trembled in the glass as my hand shook when I lifted it.
I
drank the clear, deceivingly pure looking liquid in gulps, watching the gilded
clock behind the bar tick the seconds away.
So,
first off, I knew I was going to be a bit bias, since I totally love Las Vegas
and all books that take place there. I
used to live in Vegas and I visit quite often.
There were even a couple years I went back at least one weekend a
month! Also, the main character and I
share the same name – Ally! Okay not
spelled the same since hers is Ali, but close enough lol! So, I totally knew this book was for me!
This book
is about Ali, a successful lawyer from England who recently found out her
husband has been cheating on her. Ali
decides she has to get away and what better place to forget your troubles than
Las Vegas!
This
book is about Zac, a blackjack dealer, also British, who meets Ali on the
casino floor and an instant spark goes off.
It’s clear these two share more than a homeland and it isn’t long before
these two become more than friends. Is
this all just vacation fun or perhaps a stronger connection at play?
Both Ali and Zac had damaged backgrounds filled with hurt and abuse. I know from personal experience, it is hard to cover those scars. I think this definitely played a part in their instant connection. I can’t explain it, but it’s just something you can sometimes kind of sense off a fellow victim. It’s like a look, a glance, a flinch, how you’re always watching everyone’s hands and making sure no one gets too close to you – it’s just something you would notice.
I
really liked the storyline! You can be
anybody in Vegas. Vegas can be a great
place to forget your problems, be someone else, and not have to worry about
whatever you left behind. Perhaps that’s
not the best psychological way to deal with your problems lol. But sometimes you just need to run away and that
is exactly what Ali did.
The
main and supporting characters were likable, relatable, and well described.
The
writing style is fluid, well developed, and at a steady pace.
There
are twists and turns and unexpected moments that will keep you guessing!
This
book has a lot to offer the reader such as, romance, adventure, excitement, mystery,
thriller, suspense, intrigue, and so much more!
Also,
I found it very intriguing that the author focused on how one’s history and
past influences play a large role on their current actions, developing story,
and the path of their future. I’ve
always been curious about how the past dictates one’s future.
