GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:
When
Sandra Meyer's violent ex-boyfriend returns to sleepy Edgarville, Illinois, she
turns to the man who stood up to Nick Benedetto back in high school. If brawny
Garth Benson will pose as her boyfriend on social media, maybe Nick will leave
her alone. Sandra adores Garth, but she doesn't want any more ties to
Edgarville. Now finished with a decade of dedicated service as her mother's caregiver,
Sandra is planning her exit from this one-stoplight town.
Garth
is firmly rooted in Edgarville with the family monument business and a trophy
shop that will need a "mom" to his "pop." Garth has wanted
Sandra ever since he slugged Nick more than ten years ago. Her secrets run
deep, as do the strengths that he admires within her, but whenever he tries to
move their casual flirtations from talk to dating, she backs away.
Small
town life has strangled Sandra as effectively as Nick tried to when they were
in high school. Garth might be the one man who can protect her from Nick, but
what he expects in return is too much. On top of that, her deceased father’s
unexpected appearance in the mirror of her new home exposes long-held secrets
that will change Sandra's view of her family and hometown forever.
When
the last tie holding her to Edgarville is cut, Sandra runs as fast as she can,
but the world outside her small-town community isn’t all she expects.

EXCERPT TWO:
Her
father’s face came into focus first, followed by the rest of his body. He
smiled at Sandra, crossed the room and opened the dresser. Sandra turned to
look. The drawer was closed. Nobody standing beside it. In the mirror, her
father held the diary. Sandra reached into her purse to check. She still had
the real one. Her father opened the book to a page about a third of the way in.
Sandra followed suit. In her hand, two more pages flipped by themselves. Sandra
backed away, holding the book from her body.
“This
page?” she asked the reflection.
Her
father nodded.
“I
think he’s trying to help you,” Garth said, his voice raising gooseflesh on
Sandra’s skin. She’d forgotten he was with her.
Her
father looked at Garth and nodded again.
Sandra
folded over the top of the page to mark it and closed the diary. “Thank you,”
she told the reflection.
Her
father blew a kiss and disappeared.

GUEST POST:
Who Inspired Your Love for Books:
Like
most people, I have to credit my mother for my love of books. I'm not sure when
it all began, but I do remember reading Nancy Drew mysteries, and I remember
getting some of the Little House books for Christmas one year from my aunt. My
mother was the one who handed me my first romance, Victoria Holt's On the Night
of the Seventh Moon. Factor in some German/Swiss heritage along with hints at
Crazy Ludwig's castle, and I was carried away. I was a voracious reader, and
once I found a book I liked, I wanted more. I'd walk to the book store in town
with my hard-earned money and look for more Nancy Drew books, more Little
House, and later, more Victoria Holt. I had a vivid imagination, and with these
books to spur me on, I could imagine all kinds of stories. I can tell you that
my first writing endeavor was very early, I'd guess first or second grade. I
hand wrote a story about cats and sent it off to Simon and Schuster. My first
rejection letter! But that didn't deter me. I continued to vent my imagination
on paper, penning scenes that played in my head and rarely putting them
together into a cohesive story. I was much older when I found the inspiration
for my first novel, and like most authors when they start out, I was worried it
wouldn't be good enough for anyone else to read. I went back to school to learn
how to put all those disjointed scenes into a story people would want to read,
and applied the lessons I'd learned throughout my life on how to write. Circle
back to my mother (and my father). I gave them a very rough first draft of my
first work and they gave me my first critical review. "I can't see what
you're trying to show me. Give me more depth. Show me." And I did. I spent
hours in the library researching the things I needed to know and describing an
excavation I'd created in my mind. They pointed out to me what I was missing
and made my writing stronger. I've learned a lot since I "got
serious" about my writing, and I have my parents to thank. Not only for
setting a good example by being readers themselves, but by handing me books,
and later, by encouraging me when I set out to write one of my own.
