EXCERPT ONE:
Ash
wasn’t so sure, and her breath caught in her throat. I feel like this is some
dreadful portent. Still, she dusted off her cloak, throwing it over her arm.
I’ll have to find a spot for it to dry when we get back to the house. She fixed
her chestnut hair up into a ponytail and followed Greymalkin over a carpet of
snow, brushing snowflakes away from her pale face as she continued on. Things
had been tense lately at the house in the deep woods and, though neither Will
nor Terces had said anything directly, Ash recognized the strange signs: the
knowing glances they gave each other, Will’s frantic writing sessions, and
Terces’s new interest in the fighting arts. Terces had been a jester his whole
life, so there was no reason on earth why he’d need to fight anyone. What in
the world was going on? Ash knew that they were up to something. Why wouldn’t
they tell her what it was? If they were planning something, she wanted to help.
The sense of not knowing was killing her. Still, she wasn’t going to bring it
up at dinner. Surely Will and Terces would tell her eventually…right?

GUEST POST:
How To Make Rakeih:
Ash
Kensington is here, talking about the food from the fantasy realm, Fallenwood.
She’s going to give us a recipe for the frothy berry drink known as “rakeih”
(pronounced “raka”) and show us how we can make it here in the Other Realm.
Essentially, this drink is a berry chai tea with a frothy milk top. So there’s
three parts to the recipe – Making the chai tea concentrate, adding berry
juice, and frothing the milk.
The
difficult thing about this recipe is that berries have acid in them, so in
order to have a foam, you can’t use milk, because if you do, the milk will
start to coagulate, and the foam will taste bad. I tried to copy the recipe of
Will Everett, my mentor back in Fallenwood, and I thought he used milk, but
when I tried it, the foam just tasted all wrong. It was gross. So I looked up
some other ways to make foam, and then I realized what I’d done – Will always
made it with egg whites. And this egg white foam is much tastier than the milk
foam was. You only need a teaspoon of sugar, and it holds the sweetness in
well.
I
decided to make a big batch, and pulled out my glass sun tea holder.
Then, I made the chai tea concentrate:
Ingredients:
-8
black tea bags
-4
cups of water
-8
cardamom pods, gently crushed
-1/4
tsp. ground nutmeg
-8
whole cloves
-2-3
whole star anise
-2-4
tablespoons honey
Directions:
In a
pan over medium heat, add the water and all of the ingredients except for the
tea bags. Bring mixture to a boil & then reduce heat to low.
Remove the lid and add the tea bags.
Steep 5-7 minutes and pour mixture through mesh strainer.
Now
you have chai tea concentrate, and will need to add water and juice
concentrate, and you can pretty much add to taste. I added a pitcher of water
to my chai tea concentrate, and a half-container of Berry Nectar (which
included apple, strawberry, blackberry and raspberry juices) and a bit of black
cherry concentrate.
Then, you’ll need to make the froth:
I
took the egg whites of 2 eggs, and heated them over low heat, adding a teaspoon
of sugar. Then, I whisked until it became froth, and added it to the rakeih.
And it came out looking similar to Will’s – not the exact thing, but pretty
close. You know how you make your mother’s cookies and they never turn out the
same? Same thing here. Anyway, thanks for joining me, and I hope you’ve enjoyed
this taste of Fallenwood!
