BLURB:
Jade
Greer is an outcast. Her only light is memories of her dead family. An unusual
call leads her to Serin, a prisoner trapped in darkness for twenty years.
Saving him leads Jade to a world for people with powers. A world her parents
were once a part of. Jura, the once vibrant world, is dying. The magic is
leaving the land. Jade and Serin have no homes to go back to, but they move
forward with hope because they're no longer alone.

EXCERPT ONE:
Jade
lunged at him. He fell backwards. She straddled his chest and beat her fist and
her frustrations into his face. No one would care what she did to him. He made
her relive everything this world represented and everything she couldn’t have.
Her fists burned. No one would care. People were supposed to care. He wore a
wedding ring. He had a wife and maybe children. This world didn’t raise people
to honor such commitments.
What
Mom and Dad had was beautiful. She once wished for something like that. People
like him turned that dream to ash.
She
punched and punched. He stopped moving. Why was she born into such an ugly
world? Why couldn’t she be selfish like everyone else?
His
face caved under her blows. Finally, something bent to her will. Her fist
drilled though his skull. Jade’s blood sang. His head became bloody ground beef
flecked with small hard pieces. She punched concrete. She needed to stop. Her
body wouldn’t listen. Sharp pain slid up her arms. Stop. Gore splashed into her
face. Stop. Her body froze.

GUEST POST:
Since I mostly write
dark fantasy, I usually don’t want to be my characters. They go through some intense stuff. Visible Through Darkness is different. I
started the story years ago when I was in college and feeling lonely. Back
then, writing was a way to express my emotions, to dream while awake. I didn’t
come to Visible Through Darkness thinking it would be anything except a way to
feel better. I definitely didn’t think it would become the first book in a
series.
I
was Jade. I put all of my emotions into her. She was called to save a man
trapped in darkness for several years. Serin turns out to be the first person
she feels comfortable around. She started the story depressed and ended
hopeful. Once I finished writing the story, I felt a lot better. That’s what
always happened. Years later, after I published my first book, I was searching
my backlog of stories for my next project. I reread Visible Through Darkness.
It had potential but needed a lot of work. The first two or three pages were
nothing but exposition making the opening a little boring. My writing style had
change so the story needed an update. Also, it was only 5,000 words. I didn’t want
to sell something so short.
The
new opening was the easy part. Making it longer was an adventure because I
didn’t know what would be next for Jade and Serin. The story turned
apocalyptic, of course. My books tend to do that. How the romance between Jade
and Serin progressed was another challenge. They’re adults but are babies when
it comes to relationships. They want to be around each other but they, in their
own ways, have problems opening up. They don’t care about this, though. Visible
Through Darkness is about two lonely people who enjoy feeling comfortable
around someone else for the first time in years. Through their adventures, they
get closer and learn more about their pasts.
