BLURB:

Is it possible to be addicted to food? When does indulging in 'comfort' food become substance abuse? Is it possible that there is more than a lack of will power at work when someone can't stop eating? In Food Junkies, Vera Tarman and Phil Werdell explain what is - and isn't - food addiction, tackling this complex and poorly understood problem through the stories of many survivors and from the perspectives of medical researchers/practitioners. They break down the science behind the research so that anyone can understand it, and take a fresh look at obesity, overeating, binge eating, anorexia and bulimia. For people struggling with these issues — and their families — recognizing the condition is the first step to gaining the kind of support and advice they need.

Food Junkies (finalist in the 2016 Voice Arts Awards) offers hope and guidance. Read by Lisa Bunting, according to one audible customer review, her "calming voice assists with decreasing the shame so often found with addiction and can open the listener up to actually hearing," while another noted the audiobook version "brought the science to life in a different way than the book. It made it even more real as one can't 'skim' or 'rush' through the life-changing content."

GUEST POST:

What Kind of Writer Am I?

I am a devoted reader. I love to read books, journals, listen to audible books - I often have three different books going at the same time.

But… I am a reluctant writer.

In my 20s, I aspired to be a writer: A poet, a prose writer, even a writer of manuals or reports. Writing was my vocation. Upon finishing my Master’s degree, I had to opportunity to get my thesis published. I was overjoyed.

The sheer thrill of seeing my book about nursing homes in print far exceeded the satisfaction I got in achieving my actual M.Sc. degree. I was a published author! The book was my child, and my ticket to immortality.  My name would live on in the bookstores and libraries of the future.

It was a bittersweet achievement. Because the topic of my book was targeted to a small academic audience, the book did not generate many sales. I was writing to an audience of left leaning academics who wanted to improve the health care system for seniors. Since I was a sessional teacher for three college courses, I imagined the book would become required reading for my undergraduates.

The same year that the book was published, I received a Saturday morning call that changed my academic life. A voice on the other end of the phone invited me to enter medical school. I hastily redirected my studies from academia to clinical work. There was no one to advocate for my book. Without a professor to reference my work, the book faded into obscurity. I was mortified and became embarrassed to talk to the publishers. Several years later I saw that the book was unavailable - even on Amazon. Out of print.  I vowed never to repeat the experience.

When people suggested to me that I write a book again, this time to promote my message of food addiction, I cringed. Really, again? Was I up for the drama of my expectations? Was I able to muster the mental discipline that was required to write?  I am a reluctant writer.

Devoted to my cause, I wrote. I did catch the “bug”, the excitement of writing. The thrill of an idea, the fleshing out of a concept, of exploring “thought” experiments, the savoring of a phrase swept me up. My preference is still to write small undemanding blogs and to enjoy the art of writing without the emotional commitment of a book. I have the greatest of respect for those who dedicate their lives to writing.
