Quiet the Waves by Michael Ross - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Quiet the Waves
by Michael Ross

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Romantic Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

For Ryan Gould it's just another pay day, collect a car from Portugal deliver it to the UK. Nothing too complicated - until he decides on an unscheduled stopover in Northern France, in the city of Rennes, a quiet drink in the town square, where life would have turned out so differently if he not noticed the girl sitting on the bench was sobbing her heart out.

From there onwards his life twists and turns out of control until he finds himself in police custody charged with abduction and a journey to get to the truth. The girl on the bench, Claire, had misled him from the very beginning; who was she, and how had she managed to wreak so much havoc in his life?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
The room stinks, the historic stench of soiled human bodies is overpowering.
There are No Smoking signs posted at either end of the room but the smeared and dirty state of windows suggests years of people defying that advice. When we first met, I was willing to give the man the benefit of doubt, but the way he looks at me now is a challenge; maybe I was right - he is a total bastard after all. In all fairness it’s been a long day for him, and an even longer one for me. Leaning back in his chair he stares into space for a full two minutes before speaking, his voice gravelled with fatigue.
“Let me ask you this Ryan. If we swapped places and you were me, sitting here in my chair, would you believe one single word of the statement you’ve made today?” He takes a breath before continuing. “You need to quiet the waves.”
“Sorry?”
“You need to pull something special out of the bag to get you off the hook here, Ryan. You’re on your own in a single boat in the middle of a raging storm and without a change of direction to pacify me you’re in real trouble my friend.”
My friend? I’m screaming inside - it is not a story - it’s the truth, but the point he’s making is fair, because even I have a job to believe the witness statement I’ve just signed. Much has happened in the few days since I left Rennes, almost too much to recollect properly and somewhat impossible to comprehend. Last Friday seems like a hundred years ago, and yet it feels like only a few hours have passed since I was sitting in the city square, relaxed, drinking coffee and reflecting on my life.
GUEST POST:
Five Reasons You Should Read My Book
1.) The genesis of the book came from a real event, reimagined as a starting point.
This book has been hanging around in my head for 30 years, after the time I delivered a car from the UK for a friend to Portugal. I loved the journey, just me, foreign travel, time to stop and start whenever and wherever I pleased. I stayed the night in a random hotel in Northern Spain and when I paid the bill in the morning the receptionist was moody and wouldn’t meet me in the eyes, I got back into the car, and as I drove south whichever radio station, I tried they were playing the most miserable music, even down into Portugal. After lunch that day I got a phone call from a friend telling me that Princess Di had died in a car crash that night. My oblivion to this world-shattering event has stuck with me, I started twisting the story to have my main character delivering the car back to the UK, not realising just how important this journey would be in the story of his lifetime.
2.) The reader is travelling the same road as the writer.
I had no idea of the direction or style (or title eve) of the novel, but once I found my main character and the setting for the book’s opening the ideas came faster than I could type them. There was no plot defined in my head and there little that I deliberated over changing, except if I had been a big named author I would have most likely ditched the prologue, but I’m not so I didn’t. I think as a reader it is a must-read understanding that you are travelling the same journey as the writer. I had no list of characters with well researched back stories, I had no conclusion that I was heading for, no landmark everts to slot in.
3.) Because of the above, hopefully, it clears the reader’s mind of trying to second guess what happens next, if I did not know how could you?
4.) There are many opportunities for the reader to examine and ask, what would I have done if I was in that position; as a character, or as a writer.
5.) It’s a page turner, and the only real criticism I have received is that it should have been longer, but I must admit I do like leaving gaps for the reader’s imagination to fill in. It’s the short story writer in me.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Anna Hale cranked up the volume on her headphones, desperate to study for her high school English exam scheduled for the morning, but the hypnotic beat couldn’t mask the loathed voice of her stepfather growing louder by the second.

“You whore! Sneaking around and giving me those pious looks. You don’t think I don’t know better. I should throw you out right now, you and your bitch of a daughter!”

The soft sounds of her mother trying to pacify him were indistinct, impossible for her to hear.

Pass out already, old man.

She tried forcing her mind on the textbook, but the lines of printing blurred, making it hard to concentrate. If the subject at hand was a math or science quiz, she’d ace both without much effort. And that one computer module they’d had this semester had fascinated her. She yearned for a career in data processing, discovering all the secrets. That was if she got a choice. Her stepfather was threatening to make her leave school early to help bring more money into the household. She rolled her eyes in disgust. The guy just couldn’t hold down a job. Never his fault, like his shitty attitude wasn’t a factor. Or that his breath so often stank of booze, and his body of stale sweat.

The conversation from earlier between her and her mom bothered her like a harbinger of things to come, making it harder to focus. “I’ve made arrangements. If anything happens to me—go next door. Alex and Cindy Pace will look after you. And you get along so well with Josh and the twins.”

Her mom had talked over Anna’s every denial of anything ever happening to her. Anna was going to keep her mom safe. Learn karate or something badass at the gym to give her the upper hand. But her mom had made her promise and she had gone along with it. Anna didn’t want her mom worrying more than she already did, not that she wouldn’t stay and help her if worst came to worst. She’d never desert her mom. They had to stick together, no matter what.

Another loud series of barks drew her attention away from her favorite daydream of getting a high-paying job, of taking her mother far, far away. She’d also warned her to stay out of it, that her stepfather couldn’t help himself having to work at a job he hated, but Anna’s stomach churned with the effort. She wiped her damp palms on her patched jeans, straining to hear, the test long forgotten.

A loud crashing sound of something falling erupted downstairs. She dumped the headset and jumped off the bed, then raced down the narrow staircase in her sock feet, her pulse hammering in her ears, her head about to explode. She rounded the sharp corner that composed the L-shaped kitchen and living room, the clean but faded linoleum with most of the square-shaped pattern worn down to gray splotches, slippery beneath her feet. Her disgusting bear of a stepfather stood over her mom, his meaty fists raised like a boxer, his pugnacious face darkened by raw hatred.

100 Things Duran Duran Fans Should Know & Do During This Life by Sandy Lender - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

100 Things Duran Duran Fans Should Know & Do During This Life
by Sandy Lender

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Entertainment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Best-selling, award-winning author and life-long Duranie, Sandy Lender, offers a delightful guidebook to the fun and sometimes wacky events that bring a fandom together. 100 THINGS DURAN DURAN FANS SHOULD KNOW & DO DURING THIS LIFE is a unique, positive, optimistic, totally new take on exploring nostalgia alongside your BFFs with the supergroup that continues to provide the dance track for so many people’s lives.

This non-fiction foray into Duran Duran history is unlike any biography you’ve read before. Instead of dry stats and facts, it’s a reminder of the joy and positivity that comes from obsessing over a shared musical interest. Herein you’ll find a series of random acts “to do” and trivia you might have forgotten to celebrate. To-do: Dive in and celebrate again!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Introduction
Let me admit, up front, you’re about to read a frivolous romp through a Duranie’s brain. We’re about to dance together down Memory Lane, inspired by a Star Wars book title I saw about four months ago. To prevent myself from stealing the author’s intellectual property, I didn’t open the unauthorized 100 Things Star Wars Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die.
Instead, I’ve put together a Duran-o-rama of my own making. It’s arranged exactly as the title suggests: first an item of what a Duran Duran fan should know, followed by an item a fan can do. This order proceeds from one to one hundred in a conversational tone.
The prompts of nostalgia might be numbered, but they’re not in chronological order. Most of the to-do items are geared toward sharing your insanity with others.
Basically, you’re holding amusing reminders of carefree times when a ticket to a concert cost all of eighteen dollars, when you listened to the local radio station at midnight because they were playing the entire new DD release, or when you could grab a crew of giggling girls to plop down on the couch with a six-pack of Pepsi—because that’s what John preferred over the sponsor of the Arena tour—to watch and sing along to Arena: An Absurd Notion, complete with parental advisory.
Now, let me lift the needle off the record for a second.
GUEST POST:
What It’s Like to Share Personal Words with the World
When writing epic fantasy and genre fiction, I don’t typically have to worry about people seeing behind the author’s mask. I can hide any of my beliefs or mannerisms amid traits I’ve selected from other sources of inspiration and blended into different characters or creatures. One example is the shoulder dragons in “Move the Stars.” That’s a middle-grade fantasy novel and I based each of the shoulder dragons off a different pet bird in my life. No humans involved, but it’s easy to put my parrots’ characteristics into those smart little dragons.
Then I stepped into a non-fiction manuscript and realized I HAD to put real people and real situations into the narrative. For “100 Things Duran Duran Fans Should Know & Do During This Life,” I not only shared some of the wacky stuff my friends and I have done over the past 40 years, but I also admitted to a difficult time of “discipline” from my teen years.
It’s difficult to share personal words with the world. Picking and choosing what level of my story to share took reflection and self-inventory.
We’re taught to honor our father and mother that we may have long life and so on, right? But I think honoring our parents also teaches us humility and how to look at situations from different perspectives. When I was a teenager, struggling to understand why my parents didn’t believe I was your average kid who just happened to be obsessed with creative writing, music, and one specific band in particular, I had zero interest in the idea of “honoring parents.” I was more interested in getting through school and out of the house so I could have my own life. My own way.
Thank goodness I matured out of such angry thoughts. I can look at that teen girl’s rebelliousness now and see how both she and my parents weren’t talking to each other. We weren’t giving each other grace. We weren’t working together as a family to figure things out. We’ve grown past those fussy days, thank goodness, but finding a way to express that tumultuous time in a kind yet succinct manner for the introduction to this book wasn’t easy. It wasn’t comfortable. Yet it would have been disingenuous of me to write a Duran Duran book, suggesting to readers that I’d done all these fun, quirky activities during the ’80s, when, in fact, I missed much of the ’80s when confined to my soundless room.
Writing down and sharing personal words with the world may not be easy, but there’s something cathartic about it. I can admit—now that I’m ancient—that I was a silly teenage girl once upon a time who didn’t know how to communicate with young, worried parents. At the end of the day, I might still be silly at times, but I’m wise enough to recognize the silliness and turn it into a humorous, quirky book about a shared fandom.
This is Cricket, a green-cheek conure. In this photo, she had just taken a bath on her Sweet 16 Hatchday and was nestling in Sandy’s hand for warmth. In “Move the Stars,” the shoulder dragon named Flame is based on Cricket with tons of Cricket’s mannerisms and quirks.
EXCERPT TWO:
THE ROOT OF IT
When Denis and I started our organic market garden farm with our five kiddos in tow, we were excited to grow a bounty of wonderful produce for our local community. Ordering our first seeds had us dreaming about all of the exciting items we would produce. We couldn’t wait to hold the vegetables in our hands, taste the flavours, and share the harvest with our customers to enjoy around their dinner tables. Farm-to-fork deliciousness had begun. Our community was enthusiastic, and our CSA program was a smashing success.
Over the years, as we expanded our program, continued to grow a wide variety of vegetables, and fed hundreds of returning customers, we noticed a few recurring themes. Number one, although our customers loved their fresh produce and were excited by the incredible variety (“it’s like Christmas in a box each week!”), encountering new vegetables was daunting for them. And number two, they wanted guidance from us on how to fully use, store, enjoy, and make the most of their abundance of fresh vegetables.
The most frequent questions we get asked as market garden farmers are:
+ What is this?
+ How do I eat this? (Are all these parts edible?)
+ What sort of things can I make with this?
+ How do you store this to keep it fresh?
+ What can I do with my excess vegetables piling up in my refrigerator?
+ How can I preserve my vegetables to last through the year?
I wrote this book to answer all these questions and be a comprehensive guide for you to fully use and enjoy all your delicious, nutritious veggies.
AUTHOR BIO:
Andrea Kristin and her husband have been growing vegetables on their organic market garden farm outside of Edmonton, Alberta for nearly a decade. They sell at farmers markets and feed their local community through their thriving CSA program (@greyarrowfarm). In this book, Andrea draws from her wealth of firsthand knowledge to walk the reader graciously through all the ways to use, store, and enjoy your vegetables. She shares a bounty of insightful information, including which parts of each plant are edible, how to use them, what to do with your excess, and the various ways to preserve them to last throughout the year.
Pirate’s Promise by Bobbi Smith - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
Pirate's Promise
by Bobbi Smith
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Historical Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Tall and strikingly handsome, Adam Trent could tempt any woman, especially in his secret disguise as the swashbuckling Captain Spectre. But when this daring buccaneer wagers a seductive campaign against a beauty whose passion matches his own, he’s not prepared for what awaits him…
WINNING HER HOME WAS EASY…
Throwing a young woman out of her home is hardly decent behavior—even for a pirate. But when Adam Trent wins the Ducharme plantation in a card game, he knows it’s the perfect base for a covert scheme of revenge in which he sails the bayous as Captain Spectre. Adam agrees to let Lianne Ducharme stay until she comes of age—a decision he soon regrets. For Lianne fascinates him, and Adam cannot afford the distraction…
WINNING HER LOVE COULD COST HIM EVERYTHING
Too bad that the most virile man Lianne Ducharme has ever met is also the most infuriating. With no choice but to stay at Belle Arbor as his ‘guest’, Lianne gradually yields to her own desires. But there is far more to Adam than Lianne knows. And succumbing to a pirate’s promise of bliss could be the surest path to heartbreak…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Adam stood at the helm of the Sea Shadow issuing orders hard and fast to his crew. He knew his ship as well as he knew himself, and he intended to get every ounce of speed out of her he could. This was the moment he’d been waiting for—his final confrontation with the pirate Shark. There was no way he was going to act cautiously and give him the opportunity to slip away. Shark was his!

Adam’s expression was fierce and deadly as he kept an eye on the other boat. Every move Shark made, he countered with a better one. He was going to catch him, and he was going to see that Shark paid the price for all his murderous ways. Adam smiled grimly as the distance between them narrowed.

“We’re almost on him! It’s only a matter of time now…”

The Banshee and the Sea Shadow fired their weapons simultaneously, with the Banshee getting the worst of the exchange. Adam cheered along with his crew as their second barrage strafed the Banshee’s rigging and sent much of it crashing to the deck, taking most of Shark’s weapons out of commission at the same time. The Sea Shadow suffered damage to only one mast, leaving her completely maneuverable and ready to close in.

Adam’s dark gaze was riveted on the other vessel, watching…waiting. It appeared that chaos reigned there, but he didn’t allow himself the luxury of believing it. No matter what condition their ship was in, Shark’s men were killers. No one knew that better than Adam did.

Heart & Soul: The Soul Lives in What the Heart Loves by Toby Negus - Book Tour - Blurb Blitz - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Heart & Soul:
The Soul Lives in What the Heart Loves
by Toby Negus

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Lyrical Inspirational Prose
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Truths beautifully expressed.

Toby Negus, author and illustrator of The Heart Knows What the Mind Cannot See, has created a collection of lyrical inspirational prose messages coupled with colorful and mesmerizing symbolic illustrations that speak to the soul.

The author has continued his exploration of the most transformational psychospiritual concepts that lie deeply within all humans, bringing the wisdom of heart and soul into the light for our minds to connect with and grow from. He weaves his messages through a variety of topics, including love, freedom, choice, truth, self-awareness, the now moment, healing, peace, and most importantly, the role of the heart and soul in enlightening humanity’s journey on Planet Earth. Connections are made among these concepts to help readers make the same connections in order to find peace in their own lives.

As an artist, the author takes his ethereal subject matter, fuses it with the colors and shapes presented by his own spiritual muse, and gives the reader a visceral inner transformation through symbol, intense color, and cosmic shape.

Heart and Soul creates a deep and beautiful immersion for the reader into their own heart’s beautiful depths.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
There is a direct correlation between the amount of love we feel in life and the freedom we give to our soul.
It is true that the heart knows what the mind cannot see, and it is also true that the soul lives in what the heart loves.
The loves we have in  life allow us to know the soul’s resolve. They are urges of the soul’s wish to know life. They give us signposts of our soul’s intention, and where the heart can find joy.
They are the aspects of life where the soul seeks freedom; the times and places where we become, in that loved moment, set free from our labour and become the dream that we love.
We are then both lost and found at the same time. Lost to the mystery of life and found within the company of the love we have made.
If we do not love we confine our soul, for it is in the quest of love that the soul fulfils its purpose on earth.
Our love may be known from a sight in nature, a piece of art, a song, within the company of loved ones, or any of the thousand things that lighten the heart and inspire the mind.
Our loves are always close, beckoning us to adventure. Their presence has pushed and pulled us throughout our life.
Their persuasion is for us to make a way that is true to ourselves; an indigenous journey that honours the deeper truth of who we are.
They light the path to our true happiness, and often, to our greatest self-learning. For the journey that loves take us on is often not what we expect.
They will cause us to dig deep into the mystery of ourselves in order to summon the courage to surrender our old security for the adventure that love will always bring.
But when we love what we do, put our heart into it, then love’s providence empowers the heart and inspires the mind.
