On one particularly bumpy part of the trail, Michael assured Ron.

"You look great and natural on that mule! Like Gene Autry!” Ron was falling over now, off the mule. Ron had some choice language for Michael. After a minute he also asked, “Who is Gene Autry?”

“He was the cowboy who sang 'Don’t Fence Me In'!”

The mule train proved to be extraordinary. The views were spectacular; being inside the canyon was the best. The formation of the rocks was either tilted, straight, or flat. The horizontal layers of rocks produced the colors yellow, red, and blue. The mule and Ron were no problem; he was a natural mule rider. Thank heavens he told the mule about his relationship with Rhonda - that was the key to their bonding. Ron had a wonderful time, even if his butt was in pain. He felt the saddle was still attached to his bottom even after they left.

They found a bench looking at their incredible view of the North Rim. Michael turned to Ron telling him how nice and cool their friendship was. Michael agreed.

“I had so many friends and partners, but I was never able to have as much fun and conversations as I have had with you, Ron.”

“Partners like Gail, your former business partner?" Ron asked.

Michael playfully responded, "No, like loving, and those other things.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Good morning L.J. Ambrosio!!  Welcome back to Fabulous and Brunette!!  We are thrilled to have you here and can’t wait to learn more about you and your new book, “Reflections on the Boulevard”!!

How did your book cover come about?

I contracted a young man from India.. We communicated solely by email doing the front and back covers. He did a brilliant job –he is currently doing the third book that will be coming soon.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

In the first chapter, how easily the ferry ride brings you into the story. I hope to do the same on the upcoming book as well.

What is the inspiration behind your main hero?

Michael's journey began in the first book of the trilogy, THE RESERVOIR MAN. He beats the reservoir man and finds his truth, which frees him, as it would everyone. t book –he beats the reservoir man and finds his truth –the finding of his truth frees him as it would do for everyone.  Michael Is not a hero but an antihero in its most classical definition. What I find is the battle to find their truth and fighting off all those reservoir guys and girls.

What media outlets, role-models and real-life inspirations did you draw from while writing this book?

The role model was me and the people I encountered in my journey.

What do you love the most about the local library?

The stillness is calming, and I find it's the best place to meditate.

What is one of your favorite things in your office?

A candle.

How do you create fierce female characters?

There is no formula for a female character; if you think this way you are restricting your creative freedom.  The female character should just evolve as all the other characters.

Tell us about your main character.

He is sensitive, determined, looking for answers, bright, understanding, and he has polite eating habits. He has a great need for adventure and can multitask.  The main thing, he respects the guy next door.

How do you deal with rejection as a writer?

Become a duck and let it roll off your back. Don’t believe that dark cloud. Understand what the person is saying and then reject it. Think of something else other than what horrible thing was said. Please, don’t care. Screw them all.

What are the five musts for writing a bestseller?

Good story

Fun language

Strong characters

Great locations—even if is a room

Honest and good honest research

What music do you like to listen to while writing?

Leonard Cohen, lots of disco.

Where do you find inspiration?

Nature inspires me, in the redemption of people and the human condition.

What's it like to share your most personal words with the world?

I don’t care. I am glad to be honest and if giving it as a part of me like that could help the next person that is great.

Feeling the hotel room being yanked out from underneath her, Cody lost her grip on her temper. “I don’t care. I arrived here first.” She wheeled on Velma. “Tell him.”

Velma had a hard time meeting the man’s glittering green eyes, and Cody feared the worst. “Velma, you have to go with the first person who arrived here, and that was me.”

Velma visibly wavered, and her gaze bounced between Cody, Mr. Never-Had-Any-Patience, and her twin, who looked ready to burst into tears.

“It’s not your fault, Sister.” She patted Delma’s hand. “You didn’t know we were upstairs. I’ll handle this.”

Velma faced her two potential guests and announced, “We’ll flip for it.”

Delma immediately beamed.

“What?” Cody cried.

“Fine by me,” the stranger snapped and crossed his arms on his oversized and quite muscular pecs. Not that Cody was staring.

Velma reached into her apron pocket and drew out a silver dollar. She smiled at Cody. “Since you were here first, you can call it, and you can have heads if you want. I always liked heads in a coin toss, and I always got lucky calling heads.” Her eyes twinkled at Cody.

“Fine. Heads it is,” Cody said.

The coin flipped high in the air. Velma deftly caught it with her right hand and smacked the coin on top of her left. “Heads it is,” she proclaimed.

Cody blew out a sigh of relief.

“Hey, wait a minute,” the stranger complained.

“See for yourself.” Velma angled her hand for him to snatch a glimpse and then chucked the coin back into her pocket.

Cody stared him right in the eye. “I win.”

He eased closer—almost nose to nose—and she reconsidered her idea to gloat. His emerald eyes darkened, turned almost black, and locked onto hers. She could hear and feel each breath he took, because she held hers. Waiting.

“Share it with me.”

His gaze never wavered. She could feel it, almost like a caress.

“I promise I won’t touch you . . . if you don’t want me to.” The latter implied he wanted exactly the opposite.

Petie spent a large part of her career working at Walt Disney World—"The Most Magical Place on Earth"—where she enjoyed working in the land of fairy tales by day and creating her own romantic fairy tales by night, including her new series, The Cinderella Romances. She eventually said good-bye to her "day" job to write her stories full-time. These days Petie spends her time writing sequels to her regency time-travel series, Lords in Time, and her cozy-mystery-with-romantic-suspense series, the Mystery Angel Romances.

The do-gooder organization must have found something because they somehow managed to get an emergency hearing in front of the state appeals court and, not too long after, the appellate court overturned her conviction and ordered a new trial, at least nominally setting Sheila free after over two decades of incarceration.

Exactly six days later, Bernie Lyman sauntered into my gym and offered me some work.

“What news?” I asked.

“You’ve heard of Robert Harris, right?”

“Sure. The DA who prosecuted Hampton back when. So what?”

“Former prosecutor.” Bernie’s eyes were practically dancing in their sockets. “He got quite the splash for the Hampton trial, eventually made it up to Executive Assistant, then retired a few years back.”

“Wasn’t he a sure thing for the top job at some point?” I asked.

Bernie shrugged. “Everyone thought so, but he never went for it.”

“So what’s your point?”

“The point, my boy, is that six days ago Sheila’s conviction was overturned, the conviction brought about, primarily, through the efforts of former ADA Harris.”

“Uh huh.” I felt a sinking feeling in my gut that I was about to hear something bad.

“And this morning, Sheila was arrested for Harris’s murder.”

The character of Sam Quinton, private detective and former pro wrestler, originated from a couple of different sources. Some years back, I had just wrapped up the original sequel to The Group, titled When You Have to Go There. In between, I wrote my “weird creatures eating homeless people” horror novel, The Litter. This made two suspense procedurals and one grim horror novel in a row, and I was considering trying something a little lighter.

I thought of trying my hand at writing a private eye novel, a genre I enjoy reading, but at first couldn’t really think of any particular angle that sounded fresh. At the same time, by this point I’d been living in Columbia, Missouri, for around fifteen years and for a while had been playing with the notion of writing some sort of story featuring a fictionalized version of CoMo (as the locals call it). Thus, I had these two vague ideas in mind but nothing to really tie them together.

About a third of the way through that particular school year, a cluster of our senior boys suddenly became consumed by professional wrestling. It seemed almost over night that that’s all they wanted to talk about. (Then again, my senior year all of my coterie developed an obsession with Scooby Doo, so who am I to talk.)

One day, I was in the main office going over some paperwork, and two or three of these guys were also in there, going on and on about some wrestling program on TV the night before. As they were talking, one of my favorite PI series, the Spenser books by Robert B. Parker, popped into my head. In the Parker books, Spenser is an ex-boxer and former state police officer.

Now three things began coming together, and by the end of the day I had an idea for what seemed the most outlandish, off-the-wall possibility for a series. A retired pro wrestler who owns a local gymnasium and works part-time as a detective (emphasis on outlandish, not realistic). And why not set the work in a thinly-fictionalized version of Columbia, which means I would have a fully-fleshed out community all set to go.

As wild as the original premise was, I didn’t want to go in the direction of slapstick or satire. I wanted it to be as down-to-earth as possible (well, within the conventions of the genre at any rate) and at the same time have a little fun with the community that, at the time, had been my home for over a decade and a half.

About one year and 60,000 words later, I completed Squatter’s Rights. It has since been followed by Heel Turn and Double Frame, and this week I sent in the final edited copy of book number four, Clean Win. (Rather proud of that because I’ve never had a series go to four books before, and I’m currently committed to at least two more.)

All in all, as I look back on it I think I owe a little bit of gratitude to those students who overnight became obsessed with something as silly as pro wrestling.

A high-school teacher, former college instructor and fiction writer, Kevin R. Doyle is the author of numerous short horror stories. “You should not have come here,” Yron interrupted. He looked over my friends and then opened his mouth repeatedly, as if he were straining for air. “You should turn around now and go back home in that strange flying vessel of yours.” He waited, as if he truly expected us to go.

Duare broke the awkward silence. “We are here to ask for help, or at the very least, some information.”

“I have none of that,” Yron said.

“Help or information?” I asked.

“Neither. Both.” The jong appeared flustered by the request, and by our very presence. I wondered why our appearances here had so obviously upset this usually cunning and devious leader. Had I known that it was Yron we were dealing with, I certainly would have thought twice about meeting with him so far down in his own element.

“What are you doing out here?” I asked. Yron and his people lived thousands of miles to the north in the city of Mypos, so what had prompted them to establish such a far-flung outpost? And who had built it? I had been to Mypos and seen firsthand the fish-people’s poor sense of art and architecture. They certainly hadn’t constructed this outpost on their own.

Before Yron could respond, Ero Shan stepped forward and demanded to hear anything that Yron knew about Nalte and the strange soldiers who had taken her. Duare interjected and described the creatures we had encountered, their craft, and how they had absconded with our companion.

Yron looked anxious, if his rapidly flapping gill slits meant anything, and said, “It sounds like you’ve run afoul of the Linneauns.”
