Entheóphage

by Drema Deòraich

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Medical Mystery / Ecofiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Dr. Isobel Fallon thinks she's found a treatment that will help her son and others suffering from Milani Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder.  What she doesn't realize is that harvesting the source of this treatment in the only accessible place on earth it grows, a coral reef in the Nlaan Islands, is going to have consequences far beyond the disruption of the fragile ecosystem on one small reef.

CDC researcher Nadine Parker and her team are baffled.  Lukas Behn’s daughter Kyndra has contracted a bizarre new virus that leaves her screaming in pain.  But they can't identify any physical, biological source for that pain, not in Kyndra, nor in the dozens, then hundreds, and finally millions of children worldwide succumbing to the same virus.  And no one seems to have made a connection between what's happening with the infected children and the events on a small coral reef in the South Pacific.

Eventually, Nadine has to face the unlikely truth, and the enormous implications of it.  The children aren't sick. They're changing.  But will anyone else believe her?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT THREE:
Mitch grunted acknowledgment. “First off, your official designation for this virus is Novel Juvenile Cerebral Bacteriophage or NJCB.”
“That’s a mouthful,” Nadine said. “Let’s go with NJace.”
“Whatever you say. Good idea, I suppose, since we’ll be saying it a lot more in the coming days.” He hesitated. “This thing isn’t contained in Austin anymore.”
“Yeah, I saw on the news that the chickens got out of the coop. Texas, Idaho, where else?”
“Virginia and New York, cases that all match the working case definition.”
“Any luck in contact tracing?”
“Not yet. Tracking programs blew normal expectations all to hell. That initial case in Idaho—NJace’s first appearance outside Texas—had no exposure we can find to an infected kid from Texas. But at least that supports the argument that it isn’t airborne, which is a good thing.
“Yeah. It’s already bad. Rhue Children’s Hospital discharged most of their non-critical cases and sent the patients home with medicines and a list of instructions on how to recuperate on their own. Phage cases are being lodged in every available room and Rhue staff even reached out to non-pediatric hospitals in the city looking for more space for future cases.” Nadine pinched the bridge of her nose. “If we don’t figure out how the dang bug’s getting around, stopping its spread is gonna be harder than cracking a macadamia.”
Mitch listened in silence, which made her twitchy.
“What else you got?” she asked.
He sighed. “The Department of Homeland Security is treating this as a possible terrorist attack.”
Hope, Strength and Courage:
With Stories in Medicine Training and the Atypical Sibling Rivalry
by Kathryn Lee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Autobiography – Medical and Family

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
This book has been a self-reflective journey of a medical doctor as an ordinary person going through ordinary life's ups and downs. In epistolary form, its articles were written during the special time of her first year of training to become a general practitioner/family physician, including making the tough decision to give up hospital specialist training, "withdrawing" from fast-paced hospital work, transitioning to working from a metropolitan hospital to a rural community clinic, witnessing and getting used to a younger sibling's growing up, and being independent from a close and loving family. Some also feature a promotion of the author's new academic career at the start of the COVID 19 pandemic and how it was perceived. The book shows a journey of love, strength, perseverance, purpose and encouragement. Lots of anecdotes, lots of stories, lots of quotes. With love and respect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Yes, I think I am depressed. I am tired, strained and exhausted. Since the last year of medical school, I have lost interest in all things in life. I have a hard time concentrating and sleeping. I am constantly worried and frightened that something wrong might happen to my family. I lose sleep and joy over the slightest word, action, or movement of my brother or my parents. Whatever they are doing, I find implication that they are hurting the family or damaging our family dynamic. While some patients express their suicidal ideation, I am the only one who knows that I plan it and think of it myself. Yet I am the one who tries hard to encourage everyone else. You know, Leo, I grew up not having ‘I’ as an identity. I learned early that everything and everyone in the family comes together as a whole and all of us are an inseparable ‘family’. Only in the past three-and-a-half years of working as a doctor have I realized that I am myself, and I am responsible for the things I do, the thoughts I have and the words I speak. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it can be confusing, especially when I face the rebelliousness of my brother, who for so long I’ve felt responsible for. I need to separate myself from this somehow, but it is hard to break habits. Responsibility is such a big part of my nature. I also feel responsible for the quality of people’s lives at work, which is a huge source of stress. It weighs on me and the long hours and endless duties cause me to struggle and feel withdrawn sometimes. This has really manifested in the past few days. I can’t wait to go to bed and I dread the thought of a new day, because I’m overwhelmed and too busy. I feel ashamed for thinking these thoughts, and I also feel like a big failure because I have not been with my family, supporting them, cheering them on or earning enough money to sustain them.

by Barbara Ebel, M.D.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Medical and Historical Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Fierce weather stalks Karen Puno and her dog, Putt-Putt, as they flee their home and reach the barrier island’s bridge where both their destinies change. Karen is about to give a woman named Jennifer Barns a gift that she’s been praying for … a new liver.

As a cascading medical crisis begins, it interlocks the lives of Karen and Jennifer’s college-aged children, an anesthesiologist, a crafty surgeon, and a feisty pilot involved with the organ harvest procurement.

Will Jennifer live through the heart-stopping surgical tension in the O.R.? Will Putt-Putt find shelter from the devastating storm and circumvent the horrific events that befall him? From tragedy to triumph, Outcome is an intense, heart-wrenching, and climactic novel.

*****

Has it been a long time since a book made you cry, or cheer, or make you regret finishing the last page?

If it has, then put OUTCOME on your reading list.  It’s an emotionally-charged novel about the families, health-care team, and pilot involved with a liver transplant. Keep a box of tissues within reach. You’ll also need them for the heartbreaking yet glorious plight of the donor’s dog who goes missing in the original disaster.

*****

This is a totally new edition of Outcome which was first published in 2011.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
A feeling of uncertainty and alarm mounted up in the medium-sized dog as grains of sand blew across the dune and pelted the aluminum shutters on the face of the house. Putt-Putt had been scared before, but never like this. Not only did his instincts tell him that over the last few days the atmospheric pressure, the winds, the surf, and the growing darkness had grown unnatural and that now something was vastly wrong with the weather, but also Karen, his master, scurried everywhere and with such haste and busyness that she barely glanced at him.
Normally, he liked to lie on a rug or the carpet inside his open crate. But well into this night and the early morning hours, he preferred to stay on the cold tile floor before the hallway entrance to the basement steps. That was the best spot to stay out of Karen’s way as she ran up and down the steps, carrying things down, but not back up, and to keep his paw on the pulse of what she was doing, wondering what her increased activity meant.
The furious shaking and blowing against the house intensified as the hours ticked by.  The unstable situation made his blood speed and his heart race, and also increased his need to urinate. He got up once and circled by the main side door to give Karen his usual signal. After a half hour, to no avail, he went back to his previous perch; she had never ignored his cues before.
Hello... I'm back!
Hi everyone!  As I am sure you have noticed by now, it has been quite a while since my last post.  Unfortunately, I have been dealing with some very serious family health issues.  My days have been filled up with driving, attending doctor’s appointments, running errands, providing full-time care, etc.  This has led to zero time for blogging and has sadly caused my blog to suffer.  Thankfully, I am able to report that my family is doing much better and is on the mend.  In addition, my days have started to clear back up and I am able to get back to my passion – blogging!  I truly appreciate everyone’s understanding and kind words during this difficult time.  I have missed you all and I am very excited to get back to sharing stories, reviews, articles, news, and updates.
