“Maybe it’s a missile, or a rocket,” Emily said. “Jesus, it’s really moving fast.”

“Is it me?” Carol said. “Or is it coming right at us?”

“It’s not you,” Maggie said.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Lisa said.

“Do meteors split off from the flock?” Carol said.

“I don’t think meteors travel in a flock,” Maggie said.

“It’s like somebody aimed the thing right here,” Emily said.

And then they were silent, watching whatever it was shoot toward them. A fireball, they were now realizing, that was going to hit New Jersey any second.

“Jesus,” Lisa said, and the women dove to the ground. There was no time for them to think of their husbands, who, as it happened, were face down on Peter’s green, or their children, who were unaware that some kind of cataclysmic crash was about to occur. 

No time even for their lives to flash before their eyes because the thing was low in the sky now and not aiming for New Jersey or Bergen County or Paramus. Aiming for The Stars. And not just for The Stars, for Hope Circle.

With a blinding blast of flame and a supersonic swoosh, the thing shot over their heads and hit the Devines’ roof at a forty-five-degree angle on the front side. There was a smashing sound that was oddly muted and echoless, though the original crash was followed by three successive lightning-quick crashes, and then there was nothing.

Maggie got to her knees first and followed the black, smoky, fast-dissipating trail over their heads to her house, where smoke was wafting around the hole in her roof where whatever it was had gone crashing in.

“Oh no,” she said, “My kids.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Have you ever had an imaginary friend?

Dozens of them. I’m a writer, remember? Imaginary friends are tools of the trade. When my children were young and living at home, they would stand at my office door, listening to me have full conversations with people not in the room, and say things like, “There’s something wrong with you, Daddy.”

Do you have any phobias?

Don’t love hanging around wasps. But I don’t beat myself up over because I don’t know anyone who does.

Do you listen to music when you're writing?

I do not. I need to hear the sounds of the world I’m creating. In fact, I wear noise-cancelling headphones. No sounds other than the voice of my characters and the locations they inhabit.

Do you ever read your stories out loud?

When I was writing movies in LA, something I did nonstop for 15 years, I would often read my scripts aloud so I could hear the characters say the lines I was writing for them. I still do it on occasion with my novels but less often. I’m better at hearing what the words really sound like coming out of this or that character’s mouth. At least I like to think I’m better at it. Anyway, I hope I am. I better be. Geez, I mean after all this time.

Tell us about your main character and who inspired him/her.

Mike Devine is a 12-year-old uber-genius trying to live a normal seventh-grade-girl life. She likes soccer, the Talking Heads, baked ziti, and dinosaurs. She’s never had a boyfriend, but, man, she’d sure like to. All normal stuff for a normal girl living a normal life in the suburbs of New York. Unfortunately for her—though good news for the planet, not to mention the cul-de-sac—she has to be a genius to save the world. She’s sassy and snarky and funny as can be. She’d be even funnier, I think, if the fate of the Earth wasn’t in her preteen hands.

Rich Leder has been a working writer for more than three decades. His credits include eight novels for Laugh Riot Press and 19 produced movies—television films for CBS, Lifetime, and Hallmark and feature films for Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Tri-Star Pictures, Longridge Productions, and Left Bank Films. 

He’s been the lead singer in a Detroit rock band, a restaurateur, a Little League coach, an indie film director, a literacy tutor, a magazine editor, a screenwriting coach, a wedding consultant (it’s true), a PTA board member, a HOA president, a commercial real estate agent, and a visiting artist for the UNCW Film Studies Department, all of which, it turns out, was grist for the mill.

 This is it.

He would shoot some of them, then kill himself with the last one.

Maka counted his rounds. One in the chamber, four in the magazine. That was enough. And he had the grenade. He clipped off a cartridge and put it in his pocket. How many could he get? One? Two? More? He decided on three. A good number. He’d kill two on the road, then at least one more with the grenade when they stormed the house.

Three lives for his. It sounded like some sort of a deal.

He placed the muzzle of the automatic rifle into the rugged hole and took aim at the nearest soldier. He was about thirty metres away. Maka would drop him with a single slug. But when he looked at the man through the sights, over the blued metal of the gun, he felt bitter about dying this way. He knew the man outside was there to kill him and his kin, but what if he, too, was somebody’s father? He was probably in his forties and distantly resembled a clerk who had worked in the post office in Srebrenica. This Chetnik also wore a šajkača, with its V-shaped top making his head look like a pig’s hoof. He had a messy stubble and a moustache that seemed to hang from his long, thin nose, as he stood under the sun with weary eyes.

So, you’re here to kill me?

It’s you who’s going to die now. But I don’t do this because I like it.

If there were a way to leave this situation without killing anybody, let alone himself, Maka would do so. Just it was too late. It was far too much, and nothing could get it undone. He positioned the sights in the middle of the man’s chest and calmed his breathing down. He took the slack out of the trigger, until he felt the tiny resistance of the firing mechanism in his fingertip.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes, the story is closely based on someone I know, this Bosnian couple. I sat down with them for a series of interviews, then constructed the novel based on what had happened to them during the war. It’s an accurate account, but a work of fiction in the sense that there’s a lot of my interpretation and many of the side characters and such are fictional. But those also I created based on people who had been there, or who could have been there. I mixed up some things and added a few things. I had myself been a soldier in the Bosnian army, and I weaved in a couple of details from what I’d seen and experienced in the war. But it’s not my story at all.

Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones?

Of course, I like to know what the reader’s experience was. You can always take something home, especially from the critical ones. There’s no need to “deal” with either good or bad reviews. The reader always interprets your work through their own lens, so their response is always valid, even when it’s different from what you intended.

What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?

A good story and a good technique. I see some writers who’ve honed their technique through practice and studying, so their prose is well polished, but the things they have to say are very pedestrian. I guess when most of us lead somewhat boring lives, it tends to result in boring narratives. Then there are the ones with interesting ideas, the kind that could contribute something to humanity if only they understood some basic creative writing rules. “Rules” and “creative” sounds like an oxymoron, but they’re there for a reason. Then you have the painful types who can’t handle either element, and finally those rare, brilliant ones who master both. I don’t know which category I fall into. That’s up to my readers to determine. But I’m of course trying not to be in the first three.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

I believe that if you understand basic human psychology and have normal empathic skills, it shouldn’t matter much what your character’s gender is. One thing we men sometimes forget, though, is that for many women, the daily power imbalances and fear of gender-based violence are very real. If a male writer can weave that sentiment into his female character, he’s doing pretty well.

What are you reading now?

I often alternate between two or three books. Now I’m reading Steinbeck’s "East of Eden," and Coetzee’s "Life & Times of Michael K." Magnificent works, both.

Richard looked at the beautiful young woman who strolled beside him, the sun picking up copper highlights in her rich dark curls and catching golden flecks in her green eyes. She had been through a lot. He wanted to put his arm around her shoulder and draw her close, hold her, and protect her. Instead, he pressed his hand for a moment on the small of her back, allowing himself to feel her warm skin through her white cotton artist’s blouse before he let his hand drop.

His touch caught Claire by surprise. The gentle pressure on her back felt so intimate and filled her with unanticipated pleasure that stirred sensations in her groin. She felt an aching need to lean into him. Instead, she wandered away from his side to regain her balance. Looking in a shop window, she let herself be distracted by the display of distinctive, hand-painted pottery.

Richard felt chastened. She was so light and free with me on that amazing afternoon we spent together in Jerusalem, he thought. She seemed to love exploring the old city and markets, but since London, she’s been cool. Whenever I get close, she tenses up. I should keep some distance and not crowd her. It’s a bad idea to push unwanted affection on her when she’s obviously still grieving for Jake. It’s too soon for her to think about being with another man. And then there’s the lie I told her about Hilde.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Coffee

Which mythological creature are you most like?

The griffin, half lion, half eagle. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts, and the eagle the king of the birds, by the Middle Ages, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Since classical antiquity, griffins were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions.

What is the first book you remember making an indelible impression on you?

The story of Peter Pan, read to me when I was small on my mother’s knee, where readers are born. She was warm and smelled of Oil of Olay.

How do you develop your plot and characters?

I like my characters to be at a crossroads in some aspect of life, practical or emotional: work, money, health, relationships, loss, migration, travel, transition, fame, betrayal, or disillusionment. Anything that makes them ripe for adventure and transformation to provide a strong character arc.

The reader joins the main character as they face a pivotal moment in their life and are pulled into some life-changing encounter or event. I want a rich plot in pursuit of an outward goal—new love, success, solving a puzzle or mystery, but the course of action also triggers inner transformation. I also like the adventure to go beyond the mundane into the dramatic and eventful, which sometimes might even be mystical, supernatural, or otherworldly.

Describe your writing space.

I don’t have a set space. I move from space to space in our house depending on whether I am seeking quiet, warmth, light, coziness, energy, novelty, or a view. I might sit in my egg chair to write, bathed in sunlight with my morning coffee. Or sit cross-legged on my bed in pajamas on a Sunday morning. Or on a chaise out on the deck under the shade of a tree. I seek out a space to suit my mood or satisfy my need for certain conditions or a specific vibe.

From A Reservoir Man - Book One:

Michael had now become, after these last six months, a little more world weary and worse for the wear. Sitting on his bench, entering his last year at college. Michael still had not found his soul or his truth. His emphasis on sex was unfulfilling and empty. He wandered in the shadowy corners, the lightless streets, leading to a dead end and the darkness of an empty truck. Loneliness had become a fixture of Michael’s being. He longed for a few hours to be with Carol, Claire, or Raphael.

One day, while sitting on the bench, Michael heard in the distance Otis Reading’s “The Dock of The Bay” playing on a portable radio. The music came closer and closer and then quickly turned to the Four Tops' “Reach Out (I’ll be There).”

Picking up his head, Michael saw this extremely attractive ethnic guy standing right above him. Michael said ‘hello,’ and the young man answered.

“My name is Nick. Do you dance?”

Michael said, “Sort of, but I do not have much of a chance to go dancing.”

“You want to go tonight?” Nick asked with a smile, and he started to sing “Baby I Need Your Loving” by the Four Tops.

Michael became a little concerned about the message of the song, so he suggested that they might talk over coffee before they venture out dancing. Michael decided to cut his next two classes and have coffee.

They spent hours talking about their lives. Nick was older than Michael by nine years. Nick said he had to prepare for graduation as did Michael. He was in the school for Education and would be graduating that year.

He was first generation Greek from Cyprus and spoke fluent Greek. His family lived in Harlem on 137th Street off Broadway. He had siblings, a brother and sister. Michael was taken by him.

He made him laugh and feel amazingly comfortable. Nick invited Michael to dinner Saturday night. His mother would make Doimadakia, Humus, Tzataki and Moussaka. Michael agreed to go.

Nick’s parents were great. His mother was shy, his father a little less. They spoke with a broken accent, which Michael loved. They had a great dinner and talked a lot. Michael learned a lot about Cyprus.

Nick said after dinner, "Dancing, right?”

Good morning L. J. Ambrosio and welcome back to Fabulous and Brunette!! Congrats on completing your trilogy!! We are excited to learn more about you and your intriguing new book series, "The Reflections of Michael Trilogy."

Tell us how you decided on the names of the book titles and book series.

All three are metaphors. The Reservoir Man is like corruption in the form of love, deceit,  anger, and  disrespect of our neighbor. Reflections on the Boulevard is like a mirror reflection of us ourselves, who we are, and our loves. Ron finally sees Michael at the end -  Michael’s reflection. Ron permits himself to continue his journey having the right of passage to freedom liberty and truth. Exiles is like the exit door to explore new paths, finding creative and political freedom

How would you describe your books in just one sentence each?

Reservoir Man is searching, experience of a young to old man.

Reflections is the journey of leaning all truth.

Exiles is finding peace and the union for those who care and understand.

In previous interviews, you have described your books as "buddy books." Can you elaborate on that description?

In my understanding the buddy book is a staple of American story telling. Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Bing Crosby, and Bob Hope. They were helping each other in their relationship. They took us through adventures, escaping evil, corruption and more. They all have some way to escape and were safe. Their relationship was caring and was no different than Ron and Michael’s relationshp or Ron and Louie’s relationship.

As these books are extremely personal and based on your life and experiences, has publishing these books changed you or your life in any way and if so, how?

It has liberated me. I can forgive those who hurt me and embrace, even closer, those who love me. I want to celebrate my feelings. My memories are much clearer. The path to the end is clear.

How have your friends and family responded to your books? Have they identified themselves as any of your characters?

Family and friends' responses are personal to them, I don't want to violate their privacy, but it was incredibly positive.

Now that you have your story out and completed your trilogy, what is next? Do you have plans to continue authoring books?

One last book which will be the continuation of the Ron and Louie relationship and their journey. The novel will begin at that moment on Walden Pond as “Exiles” ended. They have a few dragonflies circling near them as Rhonda lies on the shoreline of the Pond sleeping. Our courageous young men are fascinated by the ripples in the water.

Wow, three books in three years, how did you keep focused, stay on schedule, and meet deadlines?

The deadlines were the next day. That is all the deadlines I had. I wrote two hours per night five days a week. Saturday if I was home. The next morning, I would re-read, making any additional changes.

In previous interviews, you have identified yourself being new to the writing and publishing industries. What steps or skills did you seek out to help you write this series?

I ran two major theatres; I had a bi-coastal talent agency  that produced numerous films I just jumped in and asked a lot of questions and moved on and did it. The skills were the same skills I used in my other ventures…“just do it,” it all comes together.

As you started writing the first book did you plan on it becoming a trilogy?

No! Not at all I just wanted to talk about the rite of passage and its journey. The second and third book I had more to explore in the characters as well as myself.

Can these books be read as standalones and/or read out of order?

Reflections and Exiles can easily be read out of order. Reservoir Man stand alone.

If someone could only read one of your three books, which one would you recommend to them and why?

Reflections because it has great insight in what is the right of passage and growth for a young person—the ordeal of sorry, anger, loss,  and love. It is also funny and demonstrates the best-off America’s beautiful locations also gives you a peek of Paris but that is Exile

Do you read your book reviews? If so, do they have any impact or influence on your writing style or how you approach writing your next book?

Oh yes, they are important. Reviews give someone else's insight into the book.  They are constructive.  There is never a bad review---what I like about the reviews among these host that reviewed my book is their honesty and support towards all writers they encounter

Do you respond to readers' questions and comments? If so, and as a new author, what has been your overall experience with book tours, book reading events, and social media? Has it helped you engage with readers, as well as reach and target new audiences?

I always respond to readers' statements.

I like book tours. The longer ones are good but not always. I like the blast,I think they are more productive.

Who are three celebrities you wish would read your books?

Anyone---from independent film or theatre.

What insight, messages, or take-aways do you hope your readers will gain after reading your books?

The reader should take aways the enjoyment of the book and then the lessons of the characters'  lives.  It is not for me to teach just to tell.

Looking back on your writing journey, what are some of your favorite moments or highlights over the course of completing this trilogy?

 All the journeys the characters took. I still get emotional just thinking of them and their journey to their freedom.
