Imperfections by Ann Chiappetta - Book Tour - Guest Post - Giveaway - Enter Daily!

Imperfections
by Ann Chiappetta

GENRE:   YA Contemporary Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
For Lainie, feeling unwelcome is only the beginning of her struggles. Her mom is addicted to painkillers, her stepfather is a felon, and her dad traded her in for a new family.
So what if she’s kicked out of high school? Determined and attractive, Lainie sets out to make her own path.
Shane, the young man she begins dating and believes is trustworthy, transforms into a possessive and cruel boyfriend. When Efren, Shane’s older cousin, enters her life, Lainie grasps onto a shred of hope, falling in love. Shane’s obsessive and abusive treatment of her, however, casts a deep shadow over Efren and Lainie’s chance to find  safety and a future free of the fear of Shane’s  sadistic retribution.
Will their love persevere, or will Shane’s pervasive and negative influence push Lainie and Efren apart, forcing them to love secretly?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

Shane wasn’t who he once was, and I needed to do whatever I could to help her feel safe. Witnessing the abuse and shame she’d endured because of his sick obsession twisted me, and I wanted nothing more than to pummel his snotty little face until he begged for mercy. How could anyone abuse someone like Elaina?

She strode past Shane and into my suite with the final armful, ignoring him.

“I’m done,” she said.

“I hope she doesn’t disappoint you in bed,” said Shane.

The anger boiled, but I kept myself in control. “Enough of that. This isn’t the time to rearrange your face, you snotty wanker,” I said, my voice thick with anger.

I waited until Shane dropped his gaze, then I said, “I hope that day comes soon, cousin. I hope you step over the line so I can make some improvements to your complexion.”

He retreated to his room. I heard the lock engage, and I permitted myself to feel a little regret at not defending Elaina’s character with direct contact of my fist against that arse’s face.

I entered the room. Elaina had stacked her belongings, her life, into a corner of the sitting area. It saddened me to know that a few cases and boxes were all that remained after Shane had stolen and sold the rest to get high.

There was so much about her that I wanted to know. Why her father never helped her. Why she didn’t ask for help from her relatives in New York. I knew her mother was an addict and that she and Elaina did not speak. She was enrolled in East Bay Community College and was close to earning an associate’s degree. She wanted to obtain a bachelor’s degree in kennel and stable management. So focused, and yet she seemed sad.

The fair gowns hung on a hook in the closet. Her fingers caressed the pewter and black one.

The gesture brought me a sense of gloom, as if she were saying goodbye. After I had crept into Rita’s box and listened to her sobbing, the moderate measure of guilt I felt for punching Shane, the wanker, then asking Rick to assist in throwing him over the fair gate, had been assuaged. Shane should have gotten a sounder beating, but he was still blood kin. That was the only thing that had saved him from my rearranging his mug.

Listening to Lainie’s sobs, I realized I wanted to pick her up off Rita’s back and be the one to absorb those tears. I needed her to trust me. She was so vulnerable and isolated that I wondered if she would ever take a chance on sharing the abuse I knew she had endured during her time living with Shane. I hoped when she finally decided to trust me, I would be able to handle it.

GUEST POST:

World-building can be the most important element of your book. What media outlets, role-models, and real-life inspirations did you draw from while writing this book?

This is a great question. My book’s main location is San Jose and the Santa Clara valley and the towns and cities surrounding it. Towards the end of the book Lainie and Effren make a trip back to New York. I drew upon plenty of my personal knowledge for the chapter written for the trip to New York, having lived in both locations. I grew up in New York but also spent eight years in the Santa Clara valley, bummed around in Santa Cruz and San Francisco.

I used the web for researching professional dog kennels and spoke with a few dog trainers I know. I am a guide dog user, being blind for over thirty years. I know more than the average person about the handling and training of service dogs and am fascinated with Schultz Hund and military working dogs.

As for role models, I create a character layer by layer. I am a retired family therapist. Delving into personalities and crafting memorable characters is challenging. I actually enjoy it. Ray Miller, Lainie’s boss, is modeled after the high school principal I knew and liked. Ray is a combat veteran with a below-the-knee limb loss. I came into contact with men and woman veterans in my profession and creating a positive sketch like Ray -- overcoming a devastating trauma and injury -- solidified Ray’s character on the pages and readers found him engaging.

The Renaissance fair knowledge is both personal and researched. In a weird twist of fate, I experienced both a Renn fair in New York for many years and prior to New York, spent an entire weekend at the one held in Northern California.
I did the most research with the timeline in relation to cellular and mobile phones and computers. Lainie began her journey just prior to Silicon valley exploding with the commercial production of the semiconductor. She didn’t have a cell phone when the book begins and by the end of the book  four years transpire, enough for me to insert mobile phones and household computers. I do admit shortening the smart phone and pc revolution in terms of time and I do blur the boundaries a bit to suit the story.

Thanks so much for hosting me and my book, Imperfections. 💖

Next Stop, Boston

by Iris Dorbian

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Contemporary Fiction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

Sixteen-year-old Geri Randall's life is turned upside down when her late sister's fiance, Dez Deacon, a washed-up rock star, is named her guardian. Whisked away from the only life she knew and taken on a rock and roll tour, Geri is initially desperate to win Dez's approval. That desire hits a sour note when Dez's treatment of her becomes too much to bear. What ensues is a battle of wills between her and her temperamental guardian, a collision course that will push Geri to do the unthinkable to get what she wants.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
If there was one thing she’d learned with this tour, it was that time operated on a whole other scale. It wasn’t weird to go out and have a burger at two in the morning, or stay up until five, eat an early breakfast, and then crash until noon.
At first, she’d felt like a vampire, but after a month of this nocturnal schedule, she’d gotten so acclimated to the lifestyle, she wondered how she would ever be able to go back to a daily schedule that consisted of her going to sleep at ten o’clock at night, waking up at seven o’clock so she could arrive at school by 8:30, and be in classes until 2:30 in the afternoon. Then do it all over again the next day. Lather, rinse, and repeat.
“It’s a soulless existence,” Dez said to her a week into her attempt to adjust to life on the road. He was opining about the nine to five normies. “Absolutely brain-atrophying. These poor people are like ants. Hamsters on a wheel, doing the same thing over and over again. That’s why what we do is so important to these people. For two hours, Ger, we bring them the excitement and adventure that’s missing in their dull, defeated lives. We’re like saviors to them.”
Geri clicked on her personal photo gallery. She pored through an unending succession of shots of Dez, as well as shots she never would post on her account: various hotel rooms, desk clerks on phones or dealing with customers, piles of suitcases gathered in a mound in lobbies, regular people sharing drinks at a bar, working on their laptops. She loved the simplicity of these images, which captured life in hotels with an organic detail and vibrancy. She stopped at the bar shots, then zoomed in to snag a clearer view at the people in them. The barflies seemed to be swigging whiskey or scotch, she wasn’t sure—an alcohol connoisseur, she was not; however, she’d seen so many adults in her young lifetime down gallons of liquor, she might as well be.
She studied their features to see if Dez was right about these normies. No, he wasn’t. They didn’t look defeated at all, only tired.
The Key to Circus-Mom Highway
by Allyson Rice
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  Contemporary Fiction (Family Dramedy)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
In an attempt to secure an unexpected inheritance—and hopefully find a few answers—two estranged sisters and their newly discovered brother embark on a comically surreal trip through the Deep South to retrace the life of the mother who abandoned them as infants.
On a Tuesday afternoon, sisters Jesse Chasen and Jennifer McMahon receive a phone call notifying them that their birth mother has died, leaving behind a significant inheritance. But in order to obtain it, they must follow a detailed road trip she designed for them to get to know her—and that includes finding a brother they never knew existed.
For the next week, this ill-assorted trio treks across Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia to meet their mother’s old friends, from circus performers to a juke joint owner, each of whom delivers a shocking vignette into the life of a young mother traumatized by loss and abuse. Along the way, these three siblings—Jesse, whose fiery exterior disguises a wounded, drifting musician stuck in a rut; Jennifer, whose carefully curated family life is threatened by her husband’s infidelity; and Jack, whose enigmatic Jackie, Oh! persona in the New Orleans drag queen scene helps him escape the nightmares of Afghanistan that haunt him at night—must confront their own demons (and at least one alligator). But in chasing the truth about their real mother, they may all just find their second chance.
This uproarious debut novel is a reminder that sometimes, the family you’d never have chosen may turn out to be exactly what you need.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

“We have a long drive ahead of us. Don’t make me turn this car around.”

“You can’t say that when you’re not driving, Jen,” said Jesse. “It makes no sense.”

“I know! I was kidding!” She let out an exasperated sigh.

Jack stroked Sean’s head and returned to staring darkly out the window at the passing scenery. Jesse eyed him surreptitiously in the mirror.

Over the next hour, Jennifer occasionally attempted some small talk to ease the tension, but no one was having it. Nerves were frayed and tempers were short after too little sleep the previous night. Not to mention the disturbing story from the previous day that they were all still attempting to process.

After another hour, Jennifer couldn’t stand the crypt-like silence anymore. She reached for the radio, asking the others what they wanted to listen to. Jack answered “Country” as Jesse simultaneously said “Anything but Country.”

“What’s wrong with Country??” he roared. “They’re the best damn storytellers in the music business!”

“If you have to even ask that question,” said Jesse, “then it’s pointless in even responding to you.”

“Good! I don’t wanna hear it!”

“Fine!” Jesse snapped.

“Fine!” he snapped back.

“Fine!”

“Fine!”

Jennifer was morbidly curious to see how long they’d keep that call-and-response going, but after 3 more rounds of “Fine!” she yelled, “SHUT UP!! I don’t want to hear another word out of either one of you for the rest of this drive.”

That seemed to do the trick.

That is, until Jesse mumbled, “You’re not the boss of us…”

GUEST POST:

Music Playlist Inspired by My Novel

I’ve put together a music playlist inspired by my novel, The Key to Circus-Mom Highway. I used to be a DJ for blues dancing events, but haven’t done that since before the pandemic, so this was FUN! Some songs relate to themes in the book, some relate to the characters, some I chose purely for the song title, and some of these songs are mentioned in the book. So the genres in this list are all over the place. Hopefully, it’ll make you curious...

1.)  KEY TO THE HIGHWAY by Luther Allison (though the original is by Big Bill Broonzy.) This song appears in the book in a flashback about their deceased mom (“I’m gonna leave here runnin’, cuz walkin’s much too slow.”) The book title is a play on this song name, so it’s the first on the list!

2.)  TOXIC by Britney Spears. This song is in the first scene of the book. It’s playing in the strip club where Jesse bartends, the dead-end job she leaves after that first scene.

3.)  NIGHTMARE by Halsey. This might be a good theme song for Jesse. It’s got a harder edge and it talks about going through difficult things in life. It’s defiant. (“I keep a record of the wreckage in my life. I gotta recognize the weapon in my mind”).

4.)  NEW BLOWTOP BLUES by Deborah Cox. For when Jesse gets the phone call about the death of her birth mom. (“I got bad news, Baby. And you’re the first to know.”)

5.)  I SMELL TROUBLE by The Ron Teamer Band. When Jesse shows up on her big sister’s doorstep needing a place to stay. Jennifer opens the door. Cue music. (“I smell trouble. Trouble just walked through that door.

6.)  I CAN FOLLOW THE RULES SONG by HeidiSongs (Heidi Butkus). I stumbled across this “indoctrination” song on YouTube when I was looking for a theme song for Jennifer, songs about always following the rules. It was created to teach young kids in school. I think this was probably Jen’s favorite song as a little girl! Lol

7.)  PEOPLE ARE STRANGE by The Doors. Chose this one mostly for the title, once Jesse and Jen start meeting the, uh, unusual cast of supporting characters.

8.)  YA YA by Buckwheat Zydeco.  This song appears in the book when the sisters arrive in Thibodeaux, Louisiana. Harville Poupard is playing it as he cooks crawfish etouffee.

9.)  IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME by Cher. In the book, playing in the club in New Orleans when Jesse and Jennifer walk in.

10.)  JACKIE ONASSIS by Human Sexual Response. In the book– the first time they see their brother Jack. He’s onstage.

11.) NEW ORLEANS BUMP by Wynton Marsalis. I could hear this fun instrumental play over the scene where Jesse and Jen are putting on disguises outside the club in New Orleans

12.)  OLD SHOES (& PICTURE POSTCARDS) by Tom Waits. During the scene where the siblings are finally hearing part of their mom’s story and are looking through boxes of mementos. (“So goodbye, so long. The road calls me, dear. And your tears cannot bind me anymore. And farewell to the girl with the sun in her eyes…”)

13.)  SWEET THING by Rufus and Chaka Khan. This song is in the book in a flashback scene about their birth mother.

14.)  OUTTA MY HEAD AND BACK IN MY BED by Loretta Lynn. This song is in the book in a flashback scene about their birth mother.

15.)  ANGIE by The Rolling Stones. This song is in the book in a flashback scene about their birth mother.

16.)  MOTHERLESS CHILD by Bar Scott. For the scene with Jesse on the back porch in the middle of the night.

17.)  BAD DREAMS (Stripped) by Faouzia. Jack’s “issue” song.

18.)  EVERY DAY IS A WINDING ROAD by Cheryl Crow.

19.)  TURN THIS CAR AROUND by the Boom Chicka Boys. Chose this solely for the title.

20.)  YOUR WIFE’S BEEN CHEATIN’ ON US by Little Milton. This song is in the book. It’s played in the juke joint.

21.)  HIT THE ROAD JACK by Casey Abrams & Haley Reinhart. When Jack and Jennifer rescue Jesse.

22.)  I CAN’T MAKE YOU LOVE ME by Bonnie Raitt. This is in the book–Jennifer’s new ringtone for her husband.

23.)  BE MY HUSBAND by The No Shit Shirleys. When Jen opens up to Jesse about Sean.

24.)  ON THE ROAD AGAIN by Willie Nelson. When they get stuck in Milan, GA. (“On the road again. I just can’t wait to get on the road again”).

25.) REDNECKER by Hardy. For Sy. ("My truck's louder than your truck/And my collar's a little bluer/You might think that you're redneck/But I'm rednecker than you.")

26.)  MURDERED BY LOVE by the Toler Brothers. For the Sy/Shailene/Jimmy drama.

27.)  THE TWILIGHT ZONE THEME SONG. This one’s in the book.

28.)  GEORGIA by Ray Charles. In the book–Westley’s doorbell.

29.)  WIPER BLADES by Zane Taylor and Andre Hando. Jesse sitting with Jack under a tree in the rain. (“You got me feelin’ some type o’ way. But I don’t really feel right today. We like to wipe away them tears and fears, like wiper blades.”)

30.)  BURY ME IN GEORGIA by Kane Brown. When they go to their mom’s final home.

31.)  YOUR MOLECULAR STRUCTURE by Mose Allison. A funny song for when Jesse and Lex hit it off. Foreshadowing for another novel? Hmm...

32.)  THE FINDING-MY-FAMILY BLUES written by… me! You won’t be able to find this anywhere. (Yet.) It’s just the lyrics that are written currently. The lyrics appear in the book, written by Jesse.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
“Mason, take me home.”
The neurologist glanced at Mason and then at Winnie.
“Mrs. Firestone, you and everyone else in this room want you to go home. We all have your best interests at heart.”
“That’s bullshit,” Winnie mumbled under her breath, expecting no one to hear, then realizing everyone did.
Mason shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He had never heard Winnie swear. The others exchanged varied expressions of amusement across the table as the neurologist spoke again.
“Mrs. Firestone, if you decline, we may need to keep you in hospital longer to do some other evaluations. I’m really hoping that if you complete these activities today, we can discharge you sooner rather than later. What would you prefer?”
Winnie extended a trembling hand to Mason, the dread of failure clearly written on her face.
“I’ve known Mrs. Firestone for many years,” he said, taking her hand, “and more recently, I became her legal representative. Our goal, whatever it takes, is to place Winnie safely back in her own home where she can continue to enjoy a quiet life.”
“And that’s exactly our hope too,” the neurologist stated. After introductions, and a brief explanation of the process, he said, “Do you understand what we are offering you?”
Winnie looked at Mason and rolled her eyes as she nodded.
“Well then, you better get on with it,” she said, glaring at the neurologist.
