“Mason, take me home.”
The neurologist glanced at Mason and then at Winnie.
“Mrs. Firestone, you and everyone else in this room want you to go home. We all have your best interests at heart.”
“That’s bullshit,” Winnie mumbled under her breath, expecting no one to hear, then realizing everyone did.
Mason shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He had never heard Winnie swear. The others exchanged varied expressions of amusement across the table as the neurologist spoke again.
“Mrs. Firestone, if you decline, we may need to keep you in hospital longer to do some other evaluations. I’m really hoping that if you complete these activities today, we can discharge you sooner rather than later. What would you prefer?”
Winnie extended a trembling hand to Mason, the dread of failure clearly written on her face.
“I’ve known Mrs. Firestone for many years,” he said, taking her hand, “and more recently, I became her legal representative. Our goal, whatever it takes, is to place Winnie safely back in her own home where she can continue to enjoy a quiet life.”
“And that’s exactly our hope too,” the neurologist stated. After introductions, and a brief explanation of the process, he said, “Do you understand what we are offering you?”
Winnie looked at Mason and rolled her eyes as she nodded.
“Well then, you better get on with it,” she said, glaring at the neurologist.

AUTHOR BIO:
Yvonne Van Lankveld's love of words began in childhood. As a nurse, her writing skills earned her acclaim in many clinical settings, however she never lost her desire to become an author.
The Park Street Secrets is her second novel, which she wrote during the pandemic. Her first book, The Road to Alright was originally published in 2019. She is working on her third fiction novel, Follow Polly's Lane. Yvonne lives in Ridgeville, Ontario with her husband.
