She’s the One Who Can’t Keep Quiet

The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters

Book Five

by S. R. Cronin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Do you know what your problem is?

Celestine, the fifth of seven sisters, is tired of hearing about hers. Father thinks she’s frivolous because she likes pretty clothes and caters to the crowds in the taverns who adore her music. Mother thinks that because she’s the most social daughter in the family, she can’t keep quiet about anything.

They’re both wrong. Celestine hides a secret she has kept for most of her life.

As the family beauty and a talented musician with a lyrical voice, she has the best prospects for marriage to a prince. When such a liaison never happens, people assume Celestine is too choosy. But even in somewhat tolerant Ilari, a daughter hates to disappoint her family. How can she tell them she’s in love with a princess instead?

Lucky for Celestine, all her sisters are obsessed with an invading army headed to their realm. Celestine would rather ignore the threat and enjoy the freedom their lack of attention gives her. But, her voice can unlock a power that may help save Ilari. And the woman she loves is determined to fight these invaders. And her family, for all their talents, seems clueless about how to motivate the masses.

Celestine knows she can inspire the citizens of Ilari to do what needs to be done. Is it time to put her inhibitions aside and use her voice to save those she cares about?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:

Pilk changed with the coming of spring. Yes, of course, the birds sang more, the sun shone longer, and the crocus leaves peeked through the snow, but that’s not what I noticed. Those things happened every year. I saw a new sense of urgency in people’s behavior. In every crowd, I sensed something important on their minds as I performed. Something no one would speak of.

I altered my opening dialogs to give less banter and more comfort. Sometimes I added in a short ditty about staying strong and having hope. People responded well to my new approach.

The number of Svadlu in Pilk grew, and the taverns saw less of them. In subtle ways, people showed the soldiers more respect, the way people do when they expect danger.

My own life faced changes, too. I loved living in Pilk, with its crowds and noise and wonderful shopping, but I neared the end of my studies. In two eighths my quartet had to be something my parents would consider a real job, or I was doomed to the drudgery of a wheat farm where I’d help with the world’s most boring chores while I sought a husband I did not want.

There was another reason I mourned the end of my studies, one I hadn’t counted on. My only foray into science, an introduction to the heavens, had become my favorite class.

I’d never guessed the pictures humans saw in the stars reflected so many passionate stories. I’d had no idea how those pictures moved throughout the night, revolving around a mysteriously important point in the sky. What about this single dot allowed it to command the entire heavens? Except for the moon, of course, which much to my delight was commanded by no one.

I learned that those with exceptional vision could see many tiny stars making up what appeared to others to be a single point of light. Ancients elsewhere called the most famous of these “the seven sisters.” The instructor smiled at me when she said this, and I blushed.

And that was the real problem.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is an exciting, intriguing, captivating, and engaging read!!

Another fantastic addition to an already successful book series!!!

This is the NINTH book I’ve read from the impressive and talented writer, S. R. Cronin.  To say I’m a fan, would be an understatement lol!!

As usual, I was swept away with Cronin’s storytelling and her ability to completely engage the reader from page one!!

This book is Book Five in the War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters Book Series.  Each book in this book series focuses on a specific sister, her story, her special abilities, and her contributions to helping her family and community fight an upcoming war.

Each book in this book series is like a puzzle piece, and each piece provides a little more insight into the big picture of the overall story.  Like a puzzle, it can be solved following a multitude of ways, these books can easily be read as standalones, or in any order.  However, even though they can be read out of order, I wouldn’t strongly recommend that.  As it seems evident the author wrote this series in this particular order for a reason, and each book seems to fittingly complement the next, properly setting up the tone and speed of the next book in the series.

This book follows the main character, Celestine, the fifth sister, and the twin of Olivine, the sister from Book Four, “She’s the One Who Doesn’t Say Much.”  While Celestine seems like the most “normal,” sister of the bunch so far, her story is also unique, and continues to add to the mystique, intrigue, and enchantment of the upcoming final showdown battle that this book series has intensely built up to.

I think I really liked Celestine the most, because she is likable, realistic, and easy to connect with.  She is beautiful, outgoing, charismatic, friendly, and is a very talented musician with a magical voice.  Out of all the sisters she is considered the likeliest to be able to nab a prince.  While her parents seem disappointed with her life’s direction and all the distractions, as they hoped she would marry well and settle down, it seems there is more to Celestine than just being “too choosy.”  Celestine is in love, but not with a prince – a woman, Firuza, her former teacher.  How can Celestine tell her parents that she has already met her soulmate?  Will her parents understand and be able to accept her for who she is?

Furthermore, this book does continue to lead up to the impending war, and highlights Celestine’s magical voice contribution of being able to engage, gather, inspire, sway, and encourage a crowd.  Her gift is crucial to helping win the war as she proves to be an important key asset among her other uniquely gifted sisters.

Another special addition to this book is that is delves into the girl’s mom’s story as we finally get to learn more about her, her history, background, and her role in this storyline.  Not much, or more specifically very few positive or warm details about her are mentioned until this particular book.  Let’s just say there is way more to her story, and this deep dive into her character offers the reader significant insight and understanding into not just her, but the family, community, and culture.

I would also like to point out that as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, I appreciate the author using her platform to educate the public about understanding and accepting diversity, creating positive environments, and continuing to support equal civil rights and gender equality.  I think the author took great care in properly, fairly, and respectfully representing this community.

This book is clearly another enjoyable read in Cronin’s latest successful book series.  However, fair warning that these books do end with cliffhangers and with many questions still unresolved.  I hate cliffhangers lol – but I understand their importance and necessity in a book series, especially a long one.  Only two books left to go and I can't wait to find out what happens next as this story continues to climactically unfold and sadly, but eventually end!!

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it – and this book series!!  I think all historical fantasy readers will like this book too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!!

EXCERPT ONE:

As I packed up my things for the carriage ride home, a familiar-looking young woman knocked on my door.

“Your ensemble is catching on,” she said.

I studied her face. She had a small mole in the middle of her chin but otherwise unmemorable features. Except for her eyes. Those large beguiling eyes looked familiar. Wasn’t she the one we’d auditioned on the day we found Mirva? The one with a squeaky voice and no musical talent?

“I’m Ura,” she clarified. “You didn’t have a spot for me earlier, but I thought you might want to reconsider.”

Did I? Five was a good number for a group.

“I’m helpful, dependable, and eager to learn. I’d make a fine addition.” She twirled her hair between her fingers as she spoke.

Those were good qualities.  Perhaps I’d been too hasty in rejecting her. Maybe she could be taught.

No! What was I thinking? This girl had no feel for music at all.

“I’m sorry. We have all the people we need right now.”

She seemed surprised by my rejection.

“Perhaps you haven’t fully considered the advantages of adding me?”

Well, maybe I hadn’t … Maybe I should ask her more questions….

“Celestine!” Zamarran’s voice came from outside my window. “We’re all out here waiting for you. What’s taking so long?”

“Sorry,” I yelled back. “On my way.” I turned to Ura. “I have to go. The answer is no, we don’t need you but I hope you can find another group.”

“I hope so too,” she said. “Or I’ll be back.”

It sounded oddly like a threat.

BLURB:

Do you know what your problem is?

Olivine knows hers. This quiet thirteenth-century artist has been hiding a secret as she travels to K'ba to meet her friends. Others assume she's fallen in love with another artist, but it's much worse than that. For on the way to K'ba is the dirt poor nichna of Scrud, a place scorned by other Ilarians. And in Scrud is the one man who understands her.

However, Bohdan recognizes the dangers posed by an impending Mongol invasion. When he learns of Olivine's unusual visual powers, he convinces her to pick up her bow and start practicing.

She does, though she's more concerned with moving to K'ba where she can paint all day and see Bohdan whenever she wants. If only her sister hadn't decided Olivine and her fellow long eyes held one key to defending the realm.

Then, as if life wasn't complicated enough, Olivine learns the artist community she yearns to be part of has developed a different take on the invasion. They're sure the only way to survive is to capitulate completely to the Mongols’ demands. Artists who feel otherwise are no longer welcome.

Where does her future lie? The invasion is coming soon and Olivine doesn't have much time to decide.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
My parents preached tolerance and never specifically forbade courtship with anyone. They preferred to focus on the sort of man they favored. Or rather on the sort my mother favored. To be honest, my father said little on the subject, acting as if matchmaking was best handled by women.
Scrud was the poorest nichna in Ilari, followed by Eds, I supposed, and maybe Faroo. People from all three tended to marry their own, though exceptions happened. They seldom happened, though, with families like mine. Those with less education and little social standing faced this situation.
Yet, my parents were reasonable people. Perhaps if they understood how much I cared for Bohdan, and what a good man he was, they’d welcome him into their lives. I’d never know unless I made some gentle inquiries. And what better day to do it than on a day already centered around love?
The more I thought about it, the more I felt certain Coral’s wedding would be the perfect day to learn more about Mom’s flexibility when it came to selecting a mate. She’d be in her glory, having orchestrated the marriage of one daughter to an honorary prince. My question about finding love in an unexpected place would be as well received then as it could ever be.
Then once I confirmed she was as open-minded as I hoped, Bohdan and I could face the question of whether we wanted a future together, and what that future would look like.
Then, as if life wasn’t complicated enough, Olivine learns the artist community she yearns to be part of has developed a different take on the invasion. They feel certain the only way to survive is to capitulate completely to the Mongols demands. Artists who feel otherwise are no longer welcome.
Where does her future lie? The supposed invasion is coming soon and Olivine doesn’t have much time to decide.
EXCERPT ONE:
“What’s your name?”
The softness in his face told me he meant to be polite, nothing more, but such a direct question from a Scrudite made me nervous. Yes, I needed his help, but I’d been taught to use caution when dealing with these people.
“Must you know my name in order to tend to my injured horse?” I asked. I stood tall, willing my slight frame into all the bulkiness I could.
He laughed, but his shoulders slumped as he turned away from me.
“No, I’ll help you no matter how disagreeable you are.”
Bold words from one such as him. “I’m not disagreeable.”
“Perhaps not,” he said. “Maybe you’re frightened. I have trouble telling the difference.”
His words froze the response on my lips. I was scared of him and his people. Most Vinxites, especially those from families like mine, had never spoken to a Scrudite.
I turned my artist’s eye upon him. Despite his weathered skin he was young, like me. Unlike me, he had muscles from a life of strenuous work. His hair, lightened by the sun, shown with glints and his clothes were the usual mishmash of tattered rags worn by Scrudites.
“It’s just a sprain,” he said as felt around my horse’s front right ankle. The mare stood still, unusually cooperative around a stranger. He massaged her leg gently.
“I’ll get a poultice on it. Let her rest overnight; she’ll be able to walk on it tomorrow and carry your things, though you shouldn’t ride her yet. Not for a few days.”
“She can’t possibly rest here for the night. I’ve no place to stay.”
I had to pass through a small piece of Scrud to get from my parents' farm to the art studios in K’ba where my friends lived. I knew our poorest nichna lacked the inns found throughout the rest of the realm, but I hadn’t worried. My journey was short, and I didn’t intend to stop. Who knew what a stranded traveler did here.
“No Scrudite would expect a stranger to sleep alone in the desolation.” He seemed offended at the thought as he pointed out toward the dusty openness. “Our wolves are far too bold. You’ll sleep with me.”
“I’ll do no such thing!”
Another laugh, this one more amused.
“That’s not what I meant. The people of Scrud do not force themselves on each other, much less on those passing through. One of my sisters will be glad to share my hut to put you at ease. I’ve room for three. I’d prefer to send you to her hut, but your horse needs to remain still, and I suspect she’ll only do so if you stay nearby.”
This man, this Scrudite, was doing his best with me. It wasn’t his fault my horse had managed to step into a hole only paces from where he made his pitiful life. Despite his situation, he’d offered me as much courtesy as any gentleman in Pilk would have. Perhaps more.
“Thank you. If your sister is as kind as you, I look forward to meeting her.”
I looked around. He and his family had to be part of the clan of Scrudites who lived in tiny huts hugging the forest’s scraggly edge, making their meager living carving the beautiful hard woods growing at the margins of their nichna. Our entire realm valued the products they produced, and some thought his clan accessed ancient magic to infuse into their creations.
I’d always considered that last bit to be wishful thinking. Some Ilarians imagined they saw the old magic everywhere they looked.
As he turned to fetch his sister, I reached out for his arm to stop him. He seemed startled at my touch.
“Olivine,” I said. “My name is Olivine.”
“Odd name. Mine’s Bohdan.”
“Thank you for helping a traveler, Bohdan.”
MY BOOK REVIEW:
Another powerful story from S. R. Cronin!!
The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters Book Series continues with an exciting, intriguing, engaging, and stirring read in Book Four, “She’s the One Who Doesn’t Say Much.”
This is the EIGHTH book I’ve read from the inspiringly talented writer, S. R. Cronin.  To say I’m a fan, would be an understatement lol!!  Earlier this year, I had the privilege of diving into her new Book Series, “The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters.”  Although, with a family emergency and health issues, I sadly wasn’t able to partake in all her exciting book series tours.  I was fortunate to read Book One, “She’s the One Who Thinks Too Much,” and now Book Four, “She’s the One Who Doesn’t Say Much.”
Having missed Book Two, “She’s the One Who Cares Too Much,” and Book Three, “She’s the One Who Gets in Fights,” I was worried that I might get lost jumping into Book Four.  However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Right away I was fully immersed back into the story line and into the 13th century.  S. R. Cronin, seems fully aware that readers may not always read her book series in order, but that’s okay, as she uses her creative story telling to fill in any unknown background info that plays off as a light handed, friendly reminder for those who did read the previous books, and an enjoyable quick highlight reel to those who may have missed a few books in between.  This is truly an important skill that S. R. Cronin has not only found, but also exceeds in.  Although, I think everyone, myself included, would get the most out of these books and this series, if they were read in order.  However, the author provides enough info to keep the reader engaged and able to easily follow along regardless of the order her books are enjoyed.
This book is filled with interesting, intriguing, and enchanting content!!
Olivine, a free-spirited, talented artist steals this story with her striking and passionate dreams of a better place.  However, her mother and sisters are quite worried and concerned with the decisions she’s making and her plans to stay in K’ba.  Olivine, possesses a very special gift, which is referred to as “LongEyes.”  This special ability allows her to view an object that is far-away, but as if it were up-close.  While this unique talent is extremely beneficial in her artwork, it is also considered to be a key asset in her families upcoming battle against the Mongols.
While this story strongly focuses on the upcoming war preparations, there is a bit of a sweet, but forbidden love story with Olivine and Bohdan.  Olivine is clearly the rebellious sister lol.  But her clever wit, feisty attitude, and whimsical charm prove that this sister should not be underestimated.  Ultimately, Olivine is left torn between the artist community life she dreams about and helping her family fight the impeding invasion.  With time running out, Olivine must quickly choose which side she’s on.
So far, each book focuses on a specific sister, understanding her unique ability, and how she plays a part in this upcoming war.  I love seeing all the different angles of this story as each sister brings a different viewpoint!!  Reading each book is like collecting puzzle pieces!!  It is so fascinating how each piece fits together!!  At first, it’s like you can’t quite see the whole picture or how it’s all going to turn out, but with each piece you get a little more insight and a little closer to figuring it out!!
As per usual, I was swept away with Cronin’s storytelling and her ability to completely engage the reader from page one!!
S. R. Cronin’s worldbuilding skills are strong, consistent, cohesive, and believable!!!  Her writing process and development are full of original, carefully thought-out, and thoroughly extensive details!!
I am excited to continue on in this book series, collecting more puzzle pieces, and hopefully finding time to swing back to the previous two I missed out on.  I can’t wait to learn more about these incredible sisters and how they saved their realm.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all historical fantasy readers will like this book, and this book series too!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
