BOOK BLURB:
In the spring of 1975, Ben Friedman will celebrate his rite of passage into adulthood. When his beloved grandfather suddenly dies and leaves him a mysterious inheritance, Ben begins to discover who he is and where he belongs. When he chooses a path his powerful father opposes, their relationship becomes volatile. Will Ben withstand the pressure?
In 1914, Dovid Weisman, Ben's great-grandfather, struggles to protect his family when Germany declares war on Russia and the brutal Cossacks occupy his village of Siedlce, Poland. He finds that love and opportunity are still possible. If they can escape with their lives.
Slipping between war-torn Poland and modern American life, one family’s story is woven together across three generations.

EXCERPT TWO:
Aliza trudged down the street toward the intersection where Nanci’s white Volvo was stuck in the snow and was relieved to see Steven’s green Lincoln town car already there. As she got closer, Steven blared on the horn and shouted through the open door, “Stay away!”
Aliza shined the flashlight on Nanci’s vehicle, and her heart stopped when she saw the power line draped across the roof of the Volvo. The plain-clothes policeman was on his radio. The policeman in uniform yelled from the street, “Nanci, help is coming. Stay inside your vehicle!”
“Steven, I’ve got to get out of here,” she bellowed through the open window from the edge of her seat.
“Don’t get out! And don’t touch anything metal!” Steven blanched as he spoke.
The color drained from Nanci’s face, and she went white as a sheet. A vortex of wild auburn curls framed her sober expression as she scooted back into the driver’s seat. She looked suddenly overcome. “This can’t happen without Ira. Who’ll take care of Rubie?”
Aliza flinched at the sight of the downed power line as it sparked and squirmed, demonstrating that it was energized and live, carrying a lethal dose of electricity. Nanci sobbed and Aliza yearned to hold her. She could see that Nanci was near her breaking point, feeling that she couldn’t do this alone.
“I can’t touch you, or we’ll both be shocked. The ground around the car is energized by the power line,” Aliza shouted.

MY BOOK REVIEW:
“Anna’s Promise,” is a powerful, compelling, and emotionally charged read that follows three generations and their experiences (including many hardships) during their time in America. This book begins in war-torn Poland in 1914 and follows the family on their journey (and resettlement) to America spanning through the years of the 1970s.
This book, “Anna’s Promise,” delves deep into the lives of a family and their struggles they faced. This book is enriched with engaging, but educational historical content.
This book is currently not part of a book series and therefore can be read as a standalone book.
This book is comprised of 312 pages and spans over forty-three short chapters. While at first it seemed a bit on the longer side, it’s important to remember that this book does stretch across several decades, thousands of miles, and covers a wide range of topics and events.
In addition, I really enjoyed that the author included a glossary section at the end of the book, providing definitions for uncommon Jewish terms that were used throughout the book. While I truly appreciated the vocabulary reference, I would have loved the pronunciation of such terms, as I am sure I embarrassingly butchered many of those words.
Also, I thought it was very intriguing and thought provoking that the author included a page of Reading Group Questions. Great questions and topics for a book discussion! I truly enjoy these extras and appreciate that the author took the time to include them!
All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
