EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT:
The aid car took off quickly with Tera, siren blasting. Another car arrived minutes later and took three more men down the mountain, including the man I’d helped with the water. The fourth man said he felt okay, well enough to drive himself to town anyway. That left Susa, Alex, Siggi, Nate and me.
None of us had any idea what we were supposed to do next.
We gathered in the kitchen. “Maybe we should clean up,” Siggi said doubtfully.
All four of us gave her horrified looks. “Not happening,” Alex mumbled.
“No, no, not in there. I meant the kitchen. Like we usually do. There’s still some dishes we need to load in the dishwasher.”
“We could do that.” Alex sounded relieved.
“No,” I said. “Don’t. Jean Bancroft said we should preserve everything the way it is. There’s bound to be an investigation.”
“Jean who?” Alex raised an eyebrow. “Who’s going to investigate what and why?”
“Jean Bancroft. She’s one of the medics. She’s also a cop, part time.” I gave him a level look. “At the very least, the health department is going to want to investigate this. Since five people got sick from ingesting something.”
I hoped it was only five. If everybody got sick after eating our food, we were screwed. On the other hand, Alex didn’t look like he believed me.
Nate raised his hand. “Roxy’s right. Don’t wash anything more. Leave it. The health department will want to see it. If we’re lucky, they’re the only ones who will.”
He stepped into Tera’s pantry and grabbed a box of zipper lock bags and a couple of containers. “I’m going to put all the leftovers into these and date them. I’ll tape them closed so that they’ll know they haven’t been tampered with. This is a serious situation. Potentially anyway.”
“No shit,” Susa mumbled.
Alex folded his arms across his chest. “Siggi and I didn’t do anything. We carried the food out and brought the plates back. That’s it. We didn’t touch the food.”
“I made drinks,” Siggi said. “I poured wine.”
“From sealed bottles. There was nothing wrong with the wine.” Nate gave Alex a long look. “And there was nothing wrong with the food. But I can’t prove that until they’ve examined the leftovers and checked the dirty plates.”
Alex threw his hands up. “Okay, whatever. I’m going home. I’m done, completely done with this evening.”
He strode through the kitchen door, leaving the four of us staring after him.
