GENRE:   Nonfiction / Career Guide

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BOOK BLURB:
Accelerate your marketing career by learning concrete strategies to reignite your creative spark and build a compelling case for your promotion to director. From creating a standout project portfolio to evaluating your skills to  salary negotiation, networking, and interviewing best practices, this book equips ambitious marketing professionals with the tools necessary for long-term success.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Every person applying for a marketing director position has the same hard skills. This makes soft skills the differentiating factor. As one marketing director shared, “Everyone wants the title and the responsibility, but are you good at growing people? At managing a team? At strategically getting things done?”

And the best way to develop such skills is by practical application and/or getting the advice of an experienced person. Good mentors will help you polish your soft skills in particular. They help identify gaps in your leadership skills and overcome them. That way, you do not become a “manager” or a “boss,” rather, you become a transformational leader.

Transformational leaders define a big vision and activate the people around them toward vision achievement. They serve as a facilitator, solving problems that the team cannot. They empower the team to do a lot of the front-line tasks while they stay at the helm and make sure that the boat is headed in the right direction. They connect big company goals to individual goals and ease the team’s path forward. They keep information flowing because that is the key to their, the teams’, and the organizations' success.

Teams with such leaders are eager to evolve and grow because they are united under a single banner and are willing to put in the time, effort, and energy to help the organization succeed. These leaders become excellent directors who lead the company to great success.

GUEST POST:

Overcoming Writing Obstacles (389 words)

Authored by Sumayyah Rafiq (co-author)

I don’t think it’s ever possible to have any writing project and not face some kind of obstacle. That said, I feel like the hurdles you face while writing non-fiction are easier and harder than the problems you face while writing fiction.

It’s easier to resolve them because you can use best practices, SOPs, stuff like that, to overcome whatever hurdle you’re facing. Or you can also just talk to experts, gain insights, and course correct. Both are issues that I faced while working on Resparking Creativity.

But honestly, the biggest hurdle was maintaining motivation and energy through the writing process.

Admittedly, I committed to a creatively grueling process. Writing the book was six straight months of a minimum five hours of writing per weekday. I would start writing at 10-ish AM, pause for lunch, and then write until 4 PM. Writing this book was my full-time job. And that commitment… it was hard.

There were days where I’d wake up and feels so much dread. “How am I going to write this part? How am I going to do this? I have no idea what this section is going to have.”

But I’d tell myself, “Just get it started. Once you start putting pen to paper (so to speak), the answers will come to you.”

This might sound like writer’s block but it wasn’t exactly that. It was… I knew what I wanted to write but I didn’t know how to put those things into words. Those were slow writing days but I’m glad I decided to stick with it because every word was progress forward.

So, my recommendation for overcoming writing obstacles is to take a whack at it. Even if the hedge is looking terribly overgrown and you don’t know where to start? You begin by deciding which corner to start with and cut that first bunch of leaves.

The whole process of trying to figure out the path forward can feel like trying to wade through jello but all that effort is worth it. Because you realize what works, what doesn’t work, and the end product is well worth the effort. You feel so gosh darn proud when you see your writing in the end. “I was struggling to find the words then but I figured it out. And I like what I see.”
