Sophie Washington: Lemonade Day

by Tonya Duncan Ellis

GENRE:  Children's Middle Grade

When Life Gives You Lemons…Make Lemonade

Sixth-grader Sophie Washington and friends learn lessons about entrepreneurship and team work when they sign up for a city-wide, Lemonade Day event. Sophie wants to buy her mother something special for her birthday, but she’s short on cash. Her bestie, Chloe, comes up with the perfect solution. Build their own lemonade stand to raise money at Lemonade Day! The girls add friends Carly and Nathan, and Sophie’s little brother, Cole, to their team, and decide to donate some of their earnings to a local animal shelter to help save stray animals. Things are going great, until the family dog destroys their supplies. They get worse when Sophie tries to impress another boy in their class and upsets Nathan. Can they save their business in time for the event?

Mom just started her own consulting company, where she gives advice to people starting their own businesses. And already, I'm messing it up.

My mother's main job is helping out in Dad's dentist office and taking care of me and my eight-year-old brother, Cole. But before she got married and had us, she worked at a bank. Now that we're getting older, Mom wants to start working on her own again. This new consulting business is her chance.

"I'm sorry, Mom." I wring my hands when she crosses her arms around her chest. "We didn't mean to wreck your work. I'll fix these."

I set some files on the table, not sure what order they go in. Paper crinkles as Alexis imitates what I'm doing and mixes things up even more.

Mom rushes over to stop her.

“Why don’t you girls sit on the couch?”

My mother is meeting with Alexis' mother, Mrs. Gentry, to talk about ways to sell more of the scented candles she makes. Since Mrs. Gentry couldn't find a babysitter for Alexis she asked me and Chloe to keep an eye on her.

Mom made the big announcement about her consulting company at dinner last week.

"I know so many women with great business ideas who aren't sure how to get started," she explained to my father. "I want to help them get bank financing so they can be successful."

"Is that like Shark Tank?" asked Cole.

"Sort of." Mom smiled and rubbed his afro.

"What's Shark Tank?" I asked.

"That television show where people try to get investors to pay for their business ideas," Dad explained. “We watched it when you had a sleepover with your friends last weekend.”

It's a good thing that my father took my brother to his basketball practice this morning. If Cole saw this mess in the family room, I'm sure he'd have jokes.

I'll admit, the one he told at breakfast this morning made me laugh.

"What's a nosy pepper do?" he read from his joke book. "Get jalapeno business!"

SIX STARS!!!  Oh, wait, that’s not allowed?!?!  Okay, then – FIVE EXTRA LARGE STARS!!!  LOL!!!  Clearly, if I could give more than five stars, I would!!!

Another fantastic win from Tonya Duncan Ellis in her ever-so adorably, exciting, inspiring, encouraging, and intriguing Sophie Washington Book Series!!!

Sophie Washington has seriously become one of my absolute favorite children’s books/middle grade characters!!!  She is just such a cool girl – not to mention all her other highly desirable characteristics: she’s smart, caring, kindhearted, honest, polite, trustworthy, respectful, responsible, passionate, ambitious, inspirational, and charitable.

One of my favorite things about these books is how strongly character driven they are!!  Tonya has created well-developed, easy to relate to, and inspiring characters.  Without a doubt, readers will be able to easily identify with at least one of the characters in the book and find an instant connection.

Throughout the years and over the course of the book series, I have really enjoyed watching Sophie and her friends grow up, mature, and become exceptional young adults!!!  These characters are the role models we want our children looking up to!!!  These are what we hope tomorrow’s future leaders look like!!!

Whenever I get an alert that Tonya has a new Sophie Washington book out, I quickly pounce on tour sign ups as these books are not to be missed out on!!!  I honestly don’t even need to read the blurb to decide if I would be interested in it, as I already know that anything with Tonya + Sophie Washington is going to = a Highly Enjoyable and Engaging Read!!!

I really loved Tonya's creative story line of Sophie and her friends setting up a lemonade stand!!!  I remember my friends and I doing the exact same thing!!!  Although, I admit, I wish we had thought to donate the money for the animals instead of buying movie posters and wayyyy too much soda pop and candy lol!!!  I loved the idea of teaching kids the importance of hard work, understanding the value of money, learning business techniques, gaining insight to entrepreneurship, teamwork, and keeping those math skills active during summer break!!!

Another favorite, is that these books are full of diversity, acceptance, inclusiveness, and unity!!!  Tonya writes in an open, friendly, welcoming tone that all readers will find comforting and appealing!!!  This book series are exactly the type of books we want our young ones reading!!!

Even after having written twelve books in this series, Tonya continues to keep the story refreshing and exciting!!!  This book series has fiercely highlighted her creativity skills and showcased her talented story telling abilities!!!

This book is Book Twelve in the Sophie Washington Book Series.  After having read most of these books, I can honestly say that they can be read out of order and as standalones.  However, each book is truly amazing, offers so many important life lessons, and is just a pleasure to read - you'll definitely want to read them all!!!

This book is “G” rated as there is no swearing, no violence, no adult situations, and no sexual content.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it!!  I think all middle grade readers, YA fans, and even those a bit on the not so young side lol will like this book too – and this book series!!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!
