Fierce Female Lead Characters:

I've always admired strong females both in the real world and in the world of fiction where imagination can create inspirational role models that reflect the authors own values. In Sophella's Birthday Wish, the lead character, a little girl named Sophella, epitomizes my ideal of a strong young woman as she learns about herself and the world, and draws from her inner strength. It's something I've always related to myself growing up as an only child where I would write stories and transport myself into fantastical dream worlds.

For me, I think creating a strong female role model in a story involves drawing from one's own values, challenges, and victories. To celebrate both the person you are and the person you dream of being. I thought a lot about my own childhood when creating the character of Sophella. Nowadays I draw inspiration from my grandchildren. Their fierce sense of exploration, initiative, intelligence paired with their strong sense of kindness and caring.

The story may involve fairies but the true narrative is the journey of Sophella as she traverses different challenges on her way to self-discovery. She makes friends and helps those in need. And does it with grace and empathy, something I admire about her. I wanted Sophella to embody the warmth, love and aspirations that I cherish in the people in my life. That is how I brought her character to life for the story. I hope to communicate this to the readers through the course of her boundless travels.

Strong female leads are so vital in children's books I believe because it helps inspire little girls to live true and strong. To challenge themselves and push through hurdles with intelligence and empathy. I hope you find some inspiration in this very special book that is close to my heart. Maggi was born and grew up in the UK and later moved to Canada with her husband and sons. Inspired by her grandkids, she started writing stories for and about them and is currently working on her next Sophella book, and a book aimed at a slightly older readership about time travellers.
