GENRE: Medical Disaster Thriller

BLURB:
In New Normal – Resistance, a deadly pandemic is sweeping across the globe. Country after country is disintegrating into a lawless, terrified conclusion as it soon becomes apparent that there is a fate worse than death. Violence and discord stalk the streets; governments are beginning to introduce martial law and curfews in a futile attempt to regain control of a world thrown into disarray by a silent, unseen killer.
Jolyon Jones, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, knows that it is a race against time to find a vaccine for this highly infectious virus before the consequences wipe out humanity. He also knows that the virus is not the only killer. Small pockets of resistance are slowly emerging; survivors ready to fight not only against the virus, but against each other.
In the midst of the battle for survival, the faithful know that their wait for the Second Coming is nearly over. They know that He is here again. But who is He and will He be able to stop the virus before science reaches an apocalyptic solution?
Resistance is the second in Dexter C. Channing’s New Normal Trilogy. The first being New Normal – Virus, which was released earlier in the year. The final instalment is due to be released at Easter 2021.

EXCERPT ONE:
Across the Atlantic, early evening sunlight bathed the White House in an auroral light, shimmering in the gentle breeze which sighed across the velvet green lawns. Inside the Oval Office, nobody cared for the view, despite how peaceful and ordinary it looked.
The President was wearing his most mulish look as the Secretary of State and the Defence Secretary reeled from his latest revelation. For a moment, only the distant wail of sirens could be heard in the thick silence which surrounded them following the President’s declaration. The sound mingled with the groan of despair from the Defence Secretary, an involuntary reaction to what he had just listened to.
‘Mr President, Sir,’ the Defence Secretary looked at the other man and felt like smashing his fist into the supercilious expression he found staring back at him. Did the President not understand what was happening and how there was a need for unity, not discord within global relationships? Obviously, he did not! ‘Could I ask you if Professor Benjamin did this without coercion?’
Spreading his arms out in a gesture that indicated he did not know or understand, the President replied, ‘All I know is that I have been told of a call made to Beyler School of Medicine from Professor Benjamin’s office. Who instructed him to make the call, I don’t know, but I do know that if there is a second spike, another “mutation”, then Watpharm had better understand it will need Gileath to bail it out of its fucking mess, pissing about with some bloody college students and those yellow skinned freaks!’
‘This has been done as retaliation because what, Watpharm didn’t want to set up shop with an American Company? Jesus fucking Christ!’ The Defence Secretary’s fist came down on the desk, making the other two men jump. ‘We’re in the middle of a fucking world changing crisis, Mr President, Sir! We have the threat of extinction and we have got non-humans running amok on the fucking planet and some idiot professor wants some more business for his company?’
‘This administration gives Gileath a hell of a lot of dollars,’ the President glared at his Defence Secretary, ‘and I don’t want those dollars wasted! Working with Watpharm might also go some way to restoring America’s credibility on the world stage.’
‘I think what the Defence Secretary is trying to say, Mr President, is that if there is a second spike or another mutation of this current outbreak, then the world stage may not have much of an audience left to play to, Sir.’ The Secretary of State intervened.
The President threw his papers down onto his desk and stormed out of the office wearing a truculent expression.
The Secretary of State shook his head. ‘Sometimes, the thought crosses my mind that a couple of cups of disinfectant or bleach wouldn’t go amiss.’
They were both thinking of a disastrous video link press conference which had been held towards the end of April. It had been beamed around the globe, one of the few broadcasts that were made that day and America still hadn’t recovered from the backlash. Both men looked to the door, which the President had just slammed.
‘How much is a bottle of Clorax these days?’ Asked the Defence Secretary and they both burst out laughing, amazed that they still could.

GUEST POST:
Inspired by Headlines: How to Put Your Spin on Real Life Events
As most (okay, to date – all) of my books have a real life event which has sparked my interest and led me to write about it, I thought I’d tell you about how I decided to write #Faction.
Faction is a great way to combine real life facts with your own version of events – or in my books – the more likely real version of events.
I first became aware of my subject matter – Sars-nCoV2 way back in December 2019 – I’m a sort of sad, techno nerd who attaches themselves to a pc or a tv and then I search for – not to be too technical here – stuff. Stuff that interests me, or stuff that I think has a back story. Believe me, what people don’t tell you within a news report is more interesting that what you get to hear on CNN or the BBC or in any MSM outlet. Again, believe me when I tell you, there is always a back story.
So, I heard the words Virus, China, Bats, and my interest became immediately sparked. I still have the notebook (real old fashioned, huh?) in which I wrote the word VIRUS in huge upper case letters. I read up on some stuff which the MSM has spun out and then I did some reading of the real facts, arriving at the conclusion that I’m sure many of you have reached now anyway – it isn’t a virus.
Well, it is a virus, but I don’t buy the whole pandemic thing, it’s more of a plandemic if you as me. Here’s an interesting thing that I discovered – which is mentioned in the book – Sars- nCoV2 – or as we know it – Covid19 is not on the Highly Infectious Disease Register.
Let that sink in. It’s not on there. The original SARS is, and so is MERS, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. Covid19? Nope.
Then I knew I just had to write to book. Well, to be honest, both books sort of wrote themselves. As I was dealing with some very current events, I based the whole series of books – there’s three of them, I’m in the middle of writing the final book – I based them on a sort of newsreel effect – date stamping when an event happened and what happened and then, whilst the fact is the basis for the story, I then added my own version of events.
I remember when my editor read the first book. She mailed me and said something like ‘Whoa! I cannot believe what I have just read! Where does the factual bit end, and the fiction begin?’
That, I think is the key to writing about real life events. It’s very difficult to write a fact based book because the final outcome – the book – depends on whose version of the facts you base your research on. MSM isn’t the answer, so I dug deeper and started to look at Universities, Research papers, Drug Companies, Government records – now they make really interesting reading!
Maybe I’m best showing you an excerpt from the book, so you kinda get what I’m talking about. Virus and Resistance – the books – are a bit like truth or dare. I dare you to find the truth in them. Here goes – this is from Resistance –
5th May 2020
A further six hundred and ninety-three deaths from Covid-19 were recorded, making the total number of deaths from the virus in the UK the highest in Europe. This news was imparted in a daily briefing – they were still broadcast, somewhat sporadically, now, but on this day, there was quite a lot of news and Jolyon Jones, the Prime Minister, was making a speech. People who were at home, scared and worried, clicked their televisions on and off, in the hope that there was something on the screen. Today, they were not disappointed.
Virgin Atlantic announced that they were having to shed three thousand jobs and cease operations at Gatwick Airport when they returned to pre-Covid operations.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Motor Traders told of the lowest figures for new car sales since 1946.
One of several critical care temporary hospitals was opened in a virtual ceremony by the Health Secretary. Various celebrities who were bothered enough, also took part. For others, the stress of Covid-19 and its resultant chaos and fear were just too much to bear. Whether or not there would be any staff for this facility was doubtful in the face of the real terror which was gripping the nation.
The Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government criticised the apparent lack of testing availability for Covid-19, as if this would make any difference now. Jolyon had listened to his adviser with a look of incredulity on his face and knew he had to take him to task for adding fuel to an already burning fire. Right now, though, Jolyon had a speech to make. He was at the beginning; the one which Tommy Clegg had helped him to find.
“Good Evening.
We find ourselves and our nation, along with our fellow occupants around the globe, in unprecedented times. Therefore, we find ourselves, as your Government, having to take unprecedented measures.
The boundaries of law and order have been stretched to breaking point, indeed, in some places, they have been broken. We must repair the break; we must do this to protect the innocent and the uninfected. Law and order must prevail and to enable this, we have today increased the number of armed police and army personnel on the streets. We invite retired soldiers, retired police officers to return to work and take up the task of regaining control of our country.
A curfew will exist on the streets throughout the United Kingdom. Our devolved countries parliaments have already agreed to this and therefore, throughout the United Kingdom, you may only be outside of your homes between the hours of 8am and 9am, or between 6pm and 7pm, for shopping or exercise, unless you are a medic or a member of the key workers’ workforce. You must have identification on your person. If you do not, you will be shot. If you are outside at any other time, you will be shot. This is a severe extension of our lockdown laws, we appreciate that we are moving towards the removal of certain civil liberties, but we want to ensure that we are able to return to a time of liberty, in future. We must all give up freedom now, for freedom in the future. For safety, in the future.
We do this because we need to know who the Covioids are. We do this because we need to ensure that Covioids are not allowed to spread the virus and infect people, humans.
In terms of the provisions of vital services – there will disruption to electricity and to gas supplies on a temporary basis, whilst we make the streets and make going to work safe for our people. Therefore, from 9pm each evening to 6am the next morning, there will be a total electrical blackout and gas supplies will be shut off. Hospitals and care homes will continue to receive a supply.
Due to the warm, dry weather, water supplies are dwindling, and we do not have enough staff to continue to ensure everyone is supplied every day, therefore, there will be some disruption to supplies on an ad-hoc basis. Ensure you have water stored to enable you to cook and to use for sanitization purposes for when this may happen.
The internet and telephony services may be interrupted. Service will be sporadic as staff levels are significantly reduced and the need for these services to be routed to only those for whom usage is vital, is tantamount.
We know and understand that food supplies will be interrupted as the food supply chain is significantly affected. There is food in the shops and the shops will be open outside of the curfew hours, buy what you need. Do not horde. We need to ensure there is food for everyone. You may only buy one of anything, that is all, and you are limited to five items. This cuts down waiting times, as you only have two hours in the day in which to shop. The shops will be closed outside of these hours.
Meanwhile, our doctors, our vaccinologists, epidemiologists, chemists and scientists are working hard around the clock to create a vaccine which will prevent this dreadful virus from spreading. This will mean that we can if not eradicate, then certainly, we can control the virus and that means we can win, we can beat this threat to humanity itself. You must help us. You must do as we ask, for a very short time. You must give up your liberty now, so that we can give it back to you in the very near future.
Thank you. Goodbye, good luck and may God go with you.”
***
It was an interesting speech, He thought. It made no mention of what the Prime Minister intended to do with the Covioids. It was clever. Maybe there was hope, after all.
Okay, so research the timeline of Covid19, and on May fifth, you’ll find that everything that I said happened – the number of deaths in the UK – Virgin Atlantic (my favourite airline, by the way) did indeed announce the loss of 3,000 jobs. It’s my readers job to look and see where the fact ends and where the fiction begins.
Or is it fiction?
That’s another good question because – we don’t know. Going back to what I said about whose version of the ‘truth’ you research – you’ll come to different conclusions.
That’s because they do say that the truth is usually stranger than the fiction. I think in the case of Covid19, never a truer word has been said!

AUTHOR BIO:
Dexter C Channing is something of a mystery to the literary world – and indeed, the team at Just Jane Publishing has never actually met this author, having been introduced through another writer during the Covid 19 Lockdown.
The
elusive author prefers to remain an enigma to everyone, simply stating a love
of city life as opposed to the country because “it’s easier to disappear in a
big city where nobody knows your real self”. That real self is “single, not
available” and prefers being alone to the “ruinous pathway of a love affair”.
Fact, fantasy and science all combine in this author’s often dark writing style, which takes you through conspiracy theories to conclusions you’d rather not reach in the real world. Or maybe, as Dexter says, you’re already there.
Is Dexter C Channing an American? There’s a possibility, but then anything is possible, if you believe what goes on in Channing’s imagination, often taking us to places we’d rather not go. It’s clear at some point that Channing did live in America, and still has some links to Miami and Deerfield Beach.
More of late, Channing has been residing in England and has actually allowed the team at Just Jane Publishing access to a list of favourite places which include Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Liverpool, and a surprising one, given the penchant for city living – a tiny village called Kettlewell, in Yorkshire.
What does a mysterious author who nobody really knows do when they’re not writing? Channing watches. Things. Events. People. Then they get written about. Is Channing a one trick pony? Far from it. There are links with law, property, and a love of music, which is always in the background when Channing is writing.
“Virus” was the first of Dexter C Channing’s world-changing trilogy of novellas. “Resistance” is the second in the series, and the final, concluding book, “Resurrection” will be published by Just Jane Publishing around Easter, 2021.
