BLURB:
A
small town. A world wide web. Is the net really a friend?
What
do you do when the children have flown the nest and you have time on your
hands?
Six
women in the Australian riverside city of Albury realise that, without social
media skills, they’re staring irrelevancy in the face. Their book club won’t
cut it any more. It’s time to go virtual.
But
their decision to plunge into the on-line world brings shocking revelations and
unexpected outcomes. Friendships, new and old, are tested and their lives
teeter on the edge of collapse. They must navigate a path through the chaos.
But who exactly can they trust?

EXCERPT ONE:
[At Martin’s technology lesson, Sarah is shocked at an image on her
husband’s iPhone]
—Sarah
tried to smile, but her face felt stiff, as if she’d had Botox injected. Her
mind screamed: Who is this girl who looks so like Anna? Why is she on Rob’s
home screen? And why is he enveloping her in some sort of … horrible hug? It
wasn’t the kind of hug you’d give a girlfriend, more like a father’s proud
embrace.
Andrea
cleared her throat loudly in a distracting way, quite out of character.
‘Sorry,
but I have to go soon,’ she said, gathering her things. She slid her iPad into
its leather satchel. ‘Such a nuisance. It’s been fun tonight.’ She looked at
Martin. ‘There’s only ten minutes left, would you mind if we finished early?
Pick up on this again next week?’
Thank
you, Andrea. The ploy had given Sarah momentary breathing space. Her internal
scream quietened a little. She had to get out of here, away from the goodbye
chatter and the polite offers to take a slice of cake home. She needed to digest
what she’d seen and work out what it meant. She had to have time to think.
She
dreaded time to think. With the flick of a switch—what a cliché, but how true
in this case—her life had changed. It was all so confusing; her fragmented
brain whirled with questions. But an answer, barely thought out, misshapen but
insistent, was boring into her brain.
Rob
has another daughter somewhere. A daughter who’s the image of ours…

GUEST POST:
Describe Your Book Cover and How It Came About:
Once we decided to self publish, we knew it was going to be
important to find a great cover. Loretta‘s first book for middle grade readers,
titled ‘Stand up and Cheer’, had a
wonderful designer—Christabella designs—and we definitely wanted to work with
her again.
Our story is about a group of mature-age women who switch their
book club into a social media club to keep up with the times, and it reveals
the secrets and dilemmas that occur as a result of the change. It’s set in a
small town and we wanted the cover to reflect the warm, intimate atmosphere
which the characters and setting evoke. As part of the brief to the designer
Christa, we gave her a photo of a pomegranate flower from our garden to convey
the sense of colour, vibrancy and beauty that we wanted:
Christa came up with several designs, all of them wonderful.
This made the decision difficult, especially when friends we showed them to all
came back with a different first choice.
One of her early concepts really picked up on our brief by
highlighting pomegranates which stand out superbly in this cover:
Another design highlighted themes of a shared love of reading in
a convivial atmosphere which was very appealing.
A visit to our local bookshop was a great help because their
experienced staff gave us a tour of the shelves to help us understand what
covers really jumped out at buyers, and which ones appeal the most to their
readers. The winner was clear to us then.
A bright, beautiful cover with strong font for the title,
highlighting the story with all its twists and turns, and a fun secondary font
for our names to suggest the playfulness and lightness of the novel.
We’re happy!

Carolyn & Loretta ~ Good morning ladies! Welcome to FAB! It is so great to have you here! Congrats on your new book and good luck on the book tour! :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. ~ I agree! I like the cover you picked as well :) The others were lovely, but the winner just has that eye-catching look to it! I love the bright, lively, welcoming colors that give it that extra pop! :)
Hi Ally,
DeleteThanks so much for hosting us on the tour and for displaying the covers so beautifully.
It's great that you feel the same way about our cover as we do, even though we loved them all. We'd love to hear what other readers think. Do let us know your choice!
Carolyn and Loretta
Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for taking time to bring to our attention another great read. I enjoy these tours and finding out about many terrific books.
ReplyDeleteDid you come up with the title of the book before you started writing it?
ReplyDeleteHello Bernie,
DeleteThe title has had a few changes. The name 'the IN-group' came about when our women switched their book group into one where they learned about social media - an Information Networking group. And as they all agreed, everyone wants to be a part of the IN group. So that was its first title.
Later in the writing, as we introduced twists and turns and surprises, we renamed it A Mingled Yarn. But eventually, we decided that due to the secrets that were exposed, Secrets of the IN-group was the best fit.
Great guest post
ReplyDeleteReally pleased you like it, Edgar.
DeleteCarolyn and Loretta
Thanks, Rita

DeleteThe colour of the cover is quite eye catching, isn't it? It was a difficult choice as all were lovely in their own way.
Best wishes
