GENRE: Cozy Mystery

BLURB:
Manhattan,
1926. A wealthy businessman found dead. A priceless elephant figurine from an
extravagant Indian prince gone missing. And famous astrologer Evangeline Adams
is a primary suspect. To save their
jobs, Adams’ assistants Mary Adler and Clara Cosentino investigate the
astrologer’s classy clients, oddball employees and offbeat associates to help
discover who really committed the crime.
And Evangeline solves her first case with the help of astrology in this
funny, fast-paced whodunit.

EXCERPT TWO:
“And
the story of this jewel comes from some of the scriptures of India going back
over a thousand years. And it’s a myth, of course, it’s a legend, told in
visual terms that would be memorable to the listener. There was a devout man
who worshipped the Sun, and the Sun god appeared to him one day as he was
praying at the beach. But he couldn’t see him for all his brilliance. So the
god took a jewel off of his neck, which was the source of his outward splendor,
and placed it on the man in honor of his devotion. No one recognized the man as
he walked home, as the magnificence of the enormous ruby gave him an aura of
vibrancy and blinded everyone around him. It was said that the jewel would
bring protection to the land and prosperity to its people. And it was soon
magically producing eight bags of gold a day. Lord Krishna suggested that the
man share it with his fellows, and give the jewel to their ruler. But he would
have none of it. The man’s brother wore it one day and was killed in a freak
accident. I think he fell from a tree and was strangled by the necklace, just
like that!” Evangeline snapped her fingers. “What a disturbing image. And, as
you might suspect, the bad luck didn’t end there, and the man was eventually
murdered and the jewel stolen. And after the thief made off with the ruby, and
Krishna left the earth, the city no longer had protection, and was submerged
into the sea. Quite a tale!”

ReplyDeleteThanks so much Ally and thanks for hosting on your lovely site!
DeleteCongrats on the tour and thank you for the excerpt and giveaway
ReplyDeleteThanks, James! This excerpt is on the more serious side of the book, the speaker is Evangeline Adams, an astrologer who's the sleuth in the mystery. I tried to communicate Evangeline's eccentricity and how she's able to conceptualize things, which eventually enables her to solve the murder.
DeleteThanks for hosting!

ReplyDeleteThanks again, James! Astrology somehow fits with Halloween, even though it's not the most typical association.

DeleteI love a good whodunit mystery, I normally never get it right! haha!
ReplyDeleteI generally don't, either. So far no one has guessed who committed the crime in my book except my sister! Maybe she knows me too well.
DeleteWhere did you get your ideas for this book-- characters, plot, and setting?
ReplyDeleteI wrote a biography of the astrologer Evangeline Adams, who lived in New York City in the 1920s, and I wanted to use her and that time and place since I'd researched it already and liked writing about that time. The plot was inspired by her real collection of elephant figurines. There's more on my website, which will link to my name above.
