“How
was your day?” Milaine asked. “Your grin tells me it was good.”
“I
met the most stunning man and he invited me to a picnic,” Hélène said, bouncing
from foot to foot, and then deciding to place her painting material on the
floor.
“I
want to go, but I’m not sure I should. He’s gorgeous, and he has the cutest accent,
but I don’t know…”
“Hold
on, hold on,” Milaine said. “Who is he? Where is he from? What kind of cute
accent?”
“His
name is Hans Werner,” Hélène recounted, pacing. “He’s from Berlin—”
“Hélène,
never trust a German!” Milaine stopped for a moment for emphasis. “None of us
Belgians do, after what they did to us during the Great War.”
“You
don’t understand. You should see him; he’s so handsome.”
“Such
a good-looking man is probably married,” Milaine said, “or more likely in a
liaison.” “He doesn’t wear a ring.”
“Hélène,
you’re so naïve. What if he is one of these Nazi maniacs we see in magazines
and newsreels in the movie theatres?”
“He’s
so nice,” Hélène said, pouring herself a glass of Chablis in one of the two
cheap wine glasses that came with the apartment. “I’ll ask him all these
questions next Sunday.”

“Our
Time Will Come” is a love story between Hélène, an inexperienced,
nun-educated, twenty-year-old French-Canadian girl, and Hans, a
twenty-something, more matured German young man. They meet in Paris in the fall
of 1938, where they are both art students. Despite differences in culture, and
ethnicity, their love and passion progress, and after a few months, they become
lovers, and plan to be married. That part of the story will please devotees of
Young Adult and Romance genres.
“Our
Time Will Come”, like all romance novels, has a black moment in the spring
of 1939, when Hans receives a letter from Berlin telling him he is drafted in
the German army. After much hesitation, and despite Hélène’s plea to forget
about the letter, and come with her to be married in Québec, Hans decides that
his duty is to serve when his country calls. He promises to come to Québec as
soon as the “certainly short” war ends. Hélène returns to Québec, realises she
is pregnant, and faces her life as a single parent, with the strong possibility
she will not see Hans ever again.
Hans
soon realizes his mistake. The war will last for a long time, and his country,
he was willing to serve, is lead by monstrous psychopaths. He plots to attempt
what seems impossible, to reunite with his love in Canada, while he is in the
German army in Europe, in the middle of WWII. This is where “Our Time Will
Come” becomes a thriller. The suspense becomes even more intense after they
reunite and are hunted by the Canadian police and Nazi assassins.
“Our
Time Will Come” is a historical novel where the historical facts timeline
is respected, and where I tried to capture in my characters the mindset of
people living during the 1938-1943 period. Aficionados of the Second World War
novels will appreciate scenes aboard U-boats, including an attack by an RAF
Liberator.

AUTHOR BIO:
Jean Gallant Marcoux was
born in Quebec City Canada, where he earned an MD degree from Laval University.
As a board-certified allergist, he practiced in Quebec City from 1970 to 1977
after which he continued his career in Houston Texas until his retirement in
2007.
Passionate
for history, he has published articles for historical society magazines in his
native Quebec. This is his debut novel. Dr. Marcoux lives in Houston with his
family.
