Move the Stars
by Sandy Lender

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: YA Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

“Move the Stars” offers a sometimes-humorous, but always magical, story of 16-year-old Ava Stonebreaker finding and using her voice for the good of her world. With Eddag Fen afire behind her, she journeys to her father’s home, at first fearing she returns to him with failure as her legacy. Bringing with her a half-blood fae, a star reader’s apprentice and news of storm stars closing in, she also carries hope. Fanciful creatures have encouraged her to seek out the giant dragons beyond Modric’s Pass. With spunky shoulder dragons and the endangered arabesque to whom she sings accompanying her, Ava devises and undertakes a daring plan to re-shake the world…and move the stars.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
Ava didn’t stop but raised a curved hand to signal that the man should follow. If he could. She saw none of the faces in the chaos around her, merely hoping her few friends in this wretched place would be safe.
She dodged cracking branches, a tipped, stinking waste bucket, and stumbling people to cross a heaving floor. Few elders would risk the loose and waving ivy ladder; they could barely descend it if someone held its base on a calm day. Tonight, Ava tugged its anchor to assure herself it was secure, threw the mass of woven twigs-and-ivy over the side of the gatherers’ floor, and swirled around to climb down.
On the far side of the gatherers’ quarters, she glimpsed one of the elevators made from carved wood and iron bolts splintering under the pressure of too many elders crowding onto its base and too much shaking ripping it apart. The steam that powered its cogs and wheels failed, spewing a plume of vapor through a moonbeam.
She looked away, unwilling to see anyone plummet to a long death. Their screams descended in volume as they accompanied the breaking elevator to a pile of bars and bolts and bones below.
A voice whispered directly in her ear, “This way, Ava.”
The luminescence of an arabesque glowed softly near her hands. Another of the floating globes bobbed near her feet, offering a gentle pink light there as well, guiding her down the ladder as it undulated from the quake’s unending shocks. She’d never descended the ivy as fast as she did that night, making a quick leap to the floor of the fen. There, she positioned herself to hold the ladder for what few elders could follow her.
MY BOOK REVIEW:
This book took me on an exciting, magical, and mystifying adventure filled with cleaver story lines, and well-developed characters, or technically well-developed creatures!!
This book is interesting, intriguing, and entertaining!!
I really enjoyed the many main and supporting characters – Ava, Devon, Brydei, Jayndor, Ava’s brother Leon, Ava’s sister Alleeta, Arabesques: Celia and Frond; Shoulder Dragons: Strike and Flame; Giant Dragons: Stone-Crusher, Ice, Mountain-Dweller, and Dust-Maker; Elder Goira, Elder Aldoy, Elder Mace, and Jack!!  They all were important to the story and played their roles well, especially while engaging with the main characters.
I really liked Ava the best as she was a sweet 16-year-old girl, who was strong, tough, brave, sincere, honorable, persistent, caring, compassionate, and hopeful.  She worked hard in the kelp swamps which caused her disfigurement and pain.  But she knew she needed to provide for her family as they needed the money.  So, she continued to plow away and put her family’s needs above hers.  In what little down time she had she was spending time with Devon, the star reader’s apprentice, as he was educating and teaching her.  It’s clear that Ava is quite special and has a way of engaging and interacting with all creatures and elements of the world.  So, it was no real surprise that Devon would want her on his mission to save the world.
There are many characters and creatures thrown at you at the beginning of the book and it’s somewhat difficult to determine who to pay attention to and remember all their details.  However, it isn’t long before the book mellows out enough that you’re able to catch up and realize what you need to know.
I was intrigued by the author’s world-building and the development of such unique creatures.
This book genre is marketed as a young adult/fantasy book and yet the author found a way to throw in adventure, mystery, intrigue, and suspense elements into the book.  It definitely added a fascinating extra component to the story!
I really liked all the additions to the book besides the story.  This book included a map at the beginning of the book.  It showed the continent, Frumschaft, where the story takes place.  It was great to see all the villages and towns that are mentioned in this book.  The characters go on a big adventure and it takes a while to get to each place, so it was cool getting to see how far they journeyed around Frumschaft on a map.
Furthermore, at the end of this book is a list of a few characters names, creature types, locations, and a brief description of each.  This is truly essential and a huge benefit for readers who easily forget things (like me lol!!!) or get overwhelmed with books that are character heavy.  Being able to quickly turn back to reference the characters or find out their relation to the story or their relation to other characters, etc. is a huge relief to be able to quickly find these answers and not feel so lost or confused and then be able to instantly go back to where you left off and continue reading.  I love that the author took the time to include this extra into the story.  And I enjoyed reading how she put old words together and created new words for the story.
However, I felt the glossary was quite limited as so many items were missing.  For example, the glossary lists adornment as a group of arabesque and lists a smoulder as a group of shoulder dragons, but does not define what an arabesque or a shoulder dragon is.  Of course, it’s somewhat described in the book, but it took several chapters to finally have a better understanding.  In case the author decides to add to the vocab list at the back, I would have liked all the main characters to at least have a brief bio, each creature type to have a description, and the words: fen, steam elevator, an invalid, tendrils, tallow candles, patchwork of sunbeams, undulating cells and cilia, delicate vibrissa, weeping yadoe trees, etc.  Those are just a few of the lines that I Googled from the book to get a better understanding.  And I can only hope that my search returns matched up with the author’s meanings, since they had mentioned that many of the words used were created by combining old words and making up their own.
I really liked the story line concept and found it very intriguing!
This book has a couple important take-away messages that the author skillfully integrated into the storyline and plot points!
I loved the level of detail and specificity that the author spent on her world-building.  However, I felt that the detail got a bit over too specific at times.  For instance, the number of times the word kelp is used while describing Ava’s job is over 57 times!!!  It just felt repetitive and felt a bit overwhelming and annoying to keep going back to that same reference.  In addition, I found some exact same sentences repeated throughout the book.  For example, the sentence: “Shoulder dragons understand the language of their chosen humans, but Strike ignored Ava’s command on purpose.”  (Lender 7) is used at least twice word for word on page 7 and page 163.  At times, I felt like I was re-reading some phrases over and over again.
Although the story line worked and there were definitely quite a few plot points to keep the story going – this book seemed on the longer end even though it was technically only 165 eBook pages.  This book felt a bit complicated and confusing at times as there was so much going on in the story.  This is not a book that you can read lightly while doing other things.  This book needs your full attention to comprehend the full picture otherwise you get lost in the words and it’s just a jumble of letters.
There are some predictable scenes.  However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
This book is Book One in The Gentle Dragons Book Series.  It can be read as a standalone.
All in all, there were just a few hang-ups for me, but overall, I still enjoyed reading this book and would still recommend it!  I think all YA Fantasy readers and dragon story fans will like this book too!  So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!
BLURB:
Molly is in trouble. Running away from home to escape the dangers of her coven, she ends up in Edinburgh at a time of Corona. Homeless and running for her life, she must find a new coven and get the help she needs to protect herself, or she is not going to make it back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

April 14

Yesterday, I finally met another witch.

Her name is Gemma. She’d just graduated from nursing school and was volunteering to help out with testing patients for the virus.

I had seen her on the street, falling on her knee, while walking a dog, and her body magically heal the wound. I walked to her to ask if she was alright, coming close, but still pretending to keep that two meter distance.

“Just a scratch,” she assured me, and got up without help.

The dog was being difficult and kept pulling even when she was still on the ground. I offered to help and take the leash, but she shook her head. He was a friend’s dog, but they were self-isolating so he was stuck at home all day. She was trying to show patience.

I told her that we had a dog back home and that she was also finding it difficult. She asked where I was from and the conversation flowed from there.

We must have walked together for about half an hour before I felt she could be trusted. I was not about to make the same mistake twice.

She told me that there were many witches in the city, some solitary and others belonging to covens. Luckily for me, she was one of the later, and she invited me to the next coven meeting. We exchanged numbers.

I still couldn’t sleep right at night. Even after that ray of hope.

There was no accommodation anywhere and I must have checked five times. Apartments were difficult too. I could forge the documents for the lease, but I would still have to open a real bank account, and get some sort of job, which was dangerous, because I might have to expose my true identity. Even to Gemma, I gave a different last name. Wood, instead of Evans.

I ended up back in the forest under Arthur’s Seat, in my tent spell, that failed to really make me feel safe, despite the conjured mattress and warmth.

I hate being homeless.

In the morning, I felt I needed to move my legs, after all those nights of troubled sleep. I went up Carlton Hill. That place in the photos where people go to get a view of the whole city.

A message from my moms, from last night, reminded me of the dangers I had ran away from. It came from Sally, my birth-mother, who was usually high spirited, and perhaps one of the happiest people I’d known in my life. But from the tone of her note I could tell that she was worried.

Two witches from May’s coven had been seen outside the house. When my mom, Joe, came out to talk with them they left a message for me. Alice wanted to speak with me. Urgently.

“Keep safe,” was the end of Sally’s message.

I had promised myself that I wouldn’t cry, but the past few days had been so difficult.

When I reached the top and looked down at this beautiful city, the frustration, the fear and the exhaustion of the past few days hit me like a boomerang, and I couldn’t stop the tears anymore.

7 Steps to Clarity
by Nicole Stephen

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Self-Help
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

The sheer amount of decisions in life can become an overwhelming burden. Sometimes we just want to know the answers to our questions. We want to know we are making the right choices. It can be hard to see the right path with the noise of the world. There are voices and media all around us, influencing everything we do. In all that noise, where is the true voice, the one that knows? You can call it God or Source or the Universe or your Higher Self, but it is contained within you. Accessing it and giving it room and silence to speak to you is the real key to achieving your best life.

In seven steps, Nicole Stephen shows the way to a happier, more peaceful daily life. To reclaim yourself, you need to shut out the "shoulds," but in order to do that, you need to notice them. Exploring the questions and challenges that Nicole includes in this book will open your eyes to the pressures that you may have been submitting to unknowingly. In clearing up the way you see the world, you can clear a path to knowing yourself, and with that true voice guiding you, you will always find the way.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
You have so much more potential than you realize. You are not your body. You are not the roles you play. You are not the jobs you hold. You are a soul having a human experience and you always have access to higher guidance. You do not have to believe this for it to be true. But you do need to fi nd a way to understand this at a deep enough level, in order to accept the magnificent implications of it. Your soul is an individuation of God. You are a part of God and God is part of you. Because of this, you have access to your higher potential in each moment. Now some people prefer not to think of God and so it is equally appropriate to think of your connection to Source, to the Universe, Life, or even your Highest Self. It matters not what your belief system is. If you are focused on the brain, then know that the brain is like a muscle that will continue to grow and get stronger as it is exercised. If you are focused on the body, know that you have only barely begun to see what your body—made up of 11 interdependent systems—is capable of. If you are focused on your senses, know that the 5 senses you use on a daily basis are just the tip of the iceberg for what is available to us—most of us know about our unrealized 6th sense, but the more likely number is 9, and some people believe there are upwards of 20 senses! Are you consciously tapping into all these potentials each day? I know I am not, but how amazing if we started to move in that direction. By expanding your view of what is possible, you will invite opportunity to use new ways of thinking and being which will create a virtuous cycle. Unfortunately, for many of us, we create a vicious cycle by using less and less of our minds, bodies, and senses, and drawing the square around us so small that we barely believe we can get through the day. This sense of limitedness is not how we are meant to live.
GENRE: Paranormal, Sci-Fi
BLURB:
Remembrance Day is just an excuse for vampires and humans to throw themselves a parade. They like to pretend they did us werewolves a favor. But I guess it's not all bad. I do get cheap booze, live in an underground lunar city, which some would find cool, and I am employed. Sejanus Industries isn't a benevolent corporate ruler, but they're the devil I made a deal with. My life is quiet and mostly non-violent but one message from my cousin could cause me to lose everything I've sacrificed for my peaceful life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

The salt of my perspiration mingled with the tang of copper and I shifted focus to my ribs, neck, knuckles, and legs. I could feel pools of blood passing through burst capillaries begin to collect under the surface of my skin to form bruises. Air recyclers and purifiers pushed a drifting breeze and the moisture on my body lifted the heat off my skin. I felt a massive swell of energy coming up from deep within the ground through my feet. It surged with something not quite electric, but it had a familiar thrum. The depth of power terrified me. Strange as it sounds, it felt sentient in a way. As though the pool of boundless power wanted me to tap into it. I ignored it, focused on the strength within me, and visualized wisps of gold light filtering through my injuries, pushing away and draining the inflammation around them. The crack in my rib needed more attention, so I let the light linger there, and when it was healed, I eased out of the trance.

GUEST POST:

Overcoming Writing Obstacles:

Writing is not easy. Beyond the often herculean efforts of learning the craft like grammar, dialogue structure, general writing dos and don’ts, just sitting down to right brings its own sets of challenges. Over the last five years I’ve come up with ways to overcome the three biggest life challenges when it comes to writing, so I can spend more energy focusing on what matters most.

1.)  Time

I never felt like I had enough of it. When I started to pursue writing seriously, I was in rehab, had a three-year-old son, and work. Finding a solid chunk of time to write while juggling the rest was borderline impossible. So, I had to get used to doing a lot in a little bit of time. My job as a massage therapist offered a lot of flexibility when it came to that. I got in the habit of bringing my laptop with me, even if I was fully booked for the day, and leaving it setup in the breakroom. That way if I had a client cancel, or run late, I could hop on, and write what I could within that time. The trouble with writing in sprints, at least personally, is that I need time to warm-up to get my mind focused. My shortcut was talking to anyone who would listen about my projects, within reason, of course. I have a solid base of clients who are happy to critique my ideas, offer insights or ask difficult questions about the work which kept the world fresh in my mind so I knew what I was going to write before I sat in front of my laptop. I don’t think I’ve ever stopped working on a project, and I consider talking to people or thinking about it as working. It allowed me to use the limited time I had much more efficiently. Writing sprints are a busy person’s best friend. If you want to learn more, check out Chris Fox’s free book 5,000 Words Per Hour.

2.)  Focus

Staying on task and avoiding distractions, especially social media, while writing is tough. On the off chance I had more than an hour available to write, I used a productivity app called Freedom on my laptop. What Freedom does is block any activity on websites or apps for a set length of time and doesn’t let you turn it off until the timer reaches zero. So, if I had two hours, I’d tell the app to block all distractions (the list is also customizable and you can add any website, or program you want to the list) for two hours and press start. That way I had no choice but to write. You can also sync the desktop app to your phone. I swear I’m not getting paid by them to promote their product, but it was a lifesaver. Otherwise I’d spend an hour and a half laughing at memes on Reddit and Facebook and have one sentence written: “What am I supposed to write about again?”

3.)  Writer’s Block

The bane of every writer’s existence. Writer’s block was something I didn’t struggle with early on just by virtue of being an addict with a hyper-active brain. However, when I did struggle to put words on a page, the two apps I used the most were Fighter’s Block and Write or Die. Essentially, what they do is force you to keep writing until you hit a specific time, or word-count goal. With Write or Die, if you don’t consistently write, it will warn you in a variety of ways like making a sound or having spiders crawl on your screen. In hardcore setting it will actually delete words. These apps were essential for marathon sessions like NaNoWriMo. They forced me to hit my daily word goals and I finished the manuscript for NaNo in around twenty-five days. Using those apps taught me it doesn’t matter what you put down at first. Sometimes I’d write “This is dumb. Why can’t I think of anything, I was on such a roll yesterday…” but eventually something would click, and the words would flow.

I know this list isn’t exhaustive, but I believe these are the most universal issues I see writers talk and seek help for. Hopefully my solutions to these issues will help others get around their troubles, or inspire more creative answers that fit their specific goals and obstacles.
