Sword of Shadows
by Karin Rita Gastreich

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Dark Fantasy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Sisters in magic, Eolyn and Adiana seek to revive a millennial tradition once forbidden to women. When war strikes, their fledgling community of magas is destroyed; its members killed, captured or scattered.

Determined to defend her people, Eolyn seeks to escape the occupied province and deliver to King Akmael a weapon that might secure their victory. Trapped by the invading army, Adiana is taken prisoner and placed at the mercy of the ruthless Prince Mechnes.

Even as their world is torn asunder, Eolyn and Adiana cling to a common dream. Courage and perseverance guide them toward a future where the Daughters of Aithne will flourish in a world set free from the violence of men.

"War propels the story forward, and the characters are at their best when circumstances are at their worst." -Publishers Weekly

This is the second book in THE SILVER WEB trilogy. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, or as the sequel to the first book, EOLYN.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
A hush of wings on the windowsill interrupted Eolyn’s thoughts. She looked up to see a Great River Owl, its proud silhouette outlined by moonlight.
Eolyn rose to her feet in surprise, keenly aware of its penetrating gaze, though she could not see its round eyes in the dark. A breeze ruffled its feathers. Its aura was impossibly familiar: intense shades of gold, burgundy, and forest green, shot through with streaks of deepest indigo.
She held her breath and let it go in a whisper. “Akmael?”
More than a question, it was a hope, a fear, an invocation.
A shimmer passed through the owl, followed by a flash of white light. Suddenly Akmael was with her, the heat of his hand upon her throat, the strength of his fingers intertwining in her hair, the demand of his lips upon hers, warm and full of passion. The magic of the South Woods blew through the window in a humid gust, swirling about them, begging Eolyn to remember who she was and what she once meant to him.
Akmael kissed Eolyn until she had no more breath to give. Then he paused and held her close, their foreheads touching as her fingers traced the familiar prominence of his cheekbone, the line of his jaw, the curve of his full lips.
All she could hear was his desire, carried on the rhythm of his heart. She dared not speak, for if she did, she might stumble upon words of caution or prudence or common sense, and none of that had any place here. Not when he was so near, nearer than he had been in such a painfully long time, closer than he might ever be again.
This is a gift from the Gods, Akmael had once said. To deny it would be an insult to them.
“Eolyn, I—”
She hushed him with a kiss.
SOULLESS
by Jacinta Maree
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Dystopian New Adult

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Welcome to Soulless.
We are the generation that laughs at death.
Reincarnation; what was once considered a gift of immortality has become an eternity of nightmares.
Nadia Richards lives in a world plagued by reincarnation, a system of recycling souls where all past memories, personalities and traumatic events are relived daily in disjointed sequences. Trapped within their own warped realities, not even the richest and most powerful are saved from their own minds unraveling. Madness is the new human nature, and civilizations are crumpling beneath themselves trying to outrun it.
Within a society that ignores death, Nadia appears to be the one exception to the reincarnation trap. Born without any reincarnated memories and with printless eyes, the hot tempered 19 year old quickly becomes the ultimate prize to all those wishing to end the vicious cycle, or for some, to ensure they could evade death forever.
Readers discretion: Adult language, violence and some adult scenes. For mature audiences only.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

The world had turned to waste; immortality was never meant for man and it drove humanity to the edge of destruction. There had been plenty of stories about how the human race would end. Unlike the movies from Hollywood, there was no big bang caused by a sun exploding; there was no catastrophic moment where our world was flipped upside down like in a nuclear war or zombie virus outbreak. It was gradual, like a seeping virus that withered everything within its path until it ground us down into brittle, hollowed out cores. It wasn’t out to destroy our bodies; it destroyed everything we once treasured. Hope, love, compassion, joy… even our mortality. It was all gone. And now it mocked us with a peace we could never achieve: death.

I kept my hand behind me, ensuring Annie was safe before slowly creeping out. The steady thump of the Sweepers had almost gone silent as they walked further away down the block, but it was Annie’s sudden scream that spun me around. A dark shadow stepped up behind us just as a snap of red crossed my vision.
No! Before I had time to jerk my head away, the Sweeper lurched forward and snared me by the shoulder. My body seized underneath its grip as it hoisted me up from the ground.

“Run, Annie! Run!”

Annie squealed and pressed herself up against the building. “Nadia?”

“Just run!” I screamed as the robot reached over and took the shotgun from my hand. It crushed the barrel easily before finding the pistol in my back pocket. It smashed that one, too.

In its inhuman static voice, the machine said, “Corrupted identification code detected. Blacklisted threat. You are under arrest.”

“I’m not one of them!” I screamed as I wrestled in its grip. “Let me go. I’m not one of them!”

Griff Montgomery, Quarterback
by Jean Joachim

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Two people, two tragedies, two deep, devastating secrets…. Griff Montgomery is the headline-making, heart-breaking star quarterback of the Kings – a 6’4”, 33 year old womanizer. Lauren Farraday is a beautiful young interior designer, bitterly scarred by divorce, whose life is falling apart. Though they violently oppose one another in court over her beloved pug (she thinks he’s arrogant and conceited, and he thinks she’s a bitch on wheels), something happens....

These are the bare bones of this sizzling romance, riddled with passion -- the first in a brand new series that’ll tantalize football fans and have readers glued to every page and on the edge of their seats!

Griff looks like a super hero with his tousled, mahogany hair, dazzling smile, dark, sexy eyes, and a body that does something indescribable to a tight pair of jeans. Though Lauren’s sworn off men forever, one look sends shivers down her spine, making her feel lonelier than ever before. Her lustrous, long hair, sparkling green eyes, and nonstop curves make his fingers tingle at the thought of touching her. How do they deal with their cataclysmic attraction? Will they be able to drop their protective facades – his to camouflage his grief over his sister and her family, for whom he was a surrogate father, moving 3000 miles away…. And hers’ to shield her from the incalculable loss of her husband and hoped for child?

For Griff, the thought of falling in love is as foreign as toe shoes and a tutu. For Lauren, it’s like putting on cleats and a helmet and running 50 yards…. Can they, will they, risk it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
After three days of leaving a crying dog at the door, Griff tucked Spike under his arm and strapped him in the backseat of his fancy car. Once he got to the gym, he wasn’t sure what to do, so he fastened the leash to a machine by the door.
The pug curled up and was snoring, until three teammates walked in. Spike jumped, barking at the men, startling them. They laughed at the little dog, with the fur on the back of his neck standing up and his little legs stiff.
Griff put down the barbell and took hold of the lead. “Whoa, Spike. These are friends.”
“You can’t have a dog in here,” Bullhorn Brodsky, offensive lineman, said.
“What’s the matter? Don’t you like dogs?” Griff asked.
“Hell, yeah, I like dogs. Not in the training room. What if he takes a shit in here? It’ll stink up the whole place.” Bullhorn wrinkled his nose in anticipation.
“He just did, Bull. Not likely he will again.”
“You’d be surprised. My dog takes a dump three times a day.”
“You’ve got a Rottweiler. Big dogs, big shit.”
Devon Drake, the cornerback, crouched down and extended his hand to Spike. The dog sniffed it then gave him a lick. “He likes me. I say we keep him. He can be our mascot.”
“Just so he doesn’t shit in here, Montgomery,” Bullhorn said.
“Speaking of shit, ever smell yourself after a game, Bull?” Griff made a face. “Makes Spike’s smell good.”
The men laughed as they chose their machines. Buddy joined Griff in the weight area.
“You’re keeping this dog, eh?” Buddy asked, adjusting the weight on the apparatus.
“Yep. Gives me a reason to go home.”
“How about a warm, naked, female body under the covers?”
“Got someone in mind?”
Buddy chuckled. “I wish. I guess a pooch is better than nothing.”
After working out, Griff took Spike out to the field to run with him. The small dog sprinted for a bit then trotted over to the cool grass that had recently been watered and lay down, panting.
“Is that a dog or a rat? He’s got no stamina,” Brodsky said, as he started a lap.
“He’s a little guy. Leave him alone, Bull.”
“You’re worried about me hurting his feelings? Bullshit! He’s an animal, Griff.”
“I know, I know.” Griff couldn’t account for the protective feelings he had for the pug. Maybe it was the fact the canine had been abandoned and starving that touched the quarterback’s heart. Whatever it was, he had become insanely attached to the creature, quickly. Although he’d never admit it, he guessed that he and Spike had an understanding about loneliness, about being deserted, and had formed a silent pact to have each other’s backs.
Conquered
by Paula Quinene
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Erotic Historical Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Conquered is a passionate love story, as much about its main characters, Guam native Jesi Taimanglo and American GI Johan Landers, as it is about author Paula Quinene’s passion for Guam itself. As her characters try to find a place for themselves amid the war, Jesi’s relatives, and the Chamorro traditions, Quinene charts a path through a seldom told story: Guam’s place in WWII. An original idea written with an original voice that invites readers in to the exotic world of the Pacific, complete with coconut trees, banana doughnuts, dolphins swimming in the ocean, and moonlight on Pago Bay, Conquered also recounts the brutal horrors of the Japanese occupation on Guam, a US territory largely forgotten back in the States. In addition to learning about a singular and little-known culture that has played a part in the world wars of the Pacific, readers will undoubtedly crave the recipe for banana doughnuts.
—Stacey Donovan, Writer, Editor, and Author of Dive
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT THREE:

Somewhere in chapter 9

Johan stood beside her, and could feel her arm against him. The slight grazing of her skin assaulted his senses. Christ Landers, they’re praying and you’re thinking of that. She did the sign of the cross again, and the prayer ended.

“Come, Johan, you and your men eat first,” Mrs. T said, appearing out of nowhere.

“We can wait, Ma’am.”

“No, you’re our guests. Jesi and Peter, show them what we have.”

Jesi led Johan, more like pulled him first, to the table. Peter helped the other soldiers.

“It’s not fancy,” Jesi said as she handed him an old bowl and spoon. “We’re blessed we didn’t lose our house.”

“It smells delicious, and reminds me of you.” Johan smiled, remembering the coconut oil.

“You know what rice is right?”

“Yup.”

“I hope you like seafood.”

“Sure do.” A grin spread across his lips. “My favorite is brown trout because my Pops used to take me fly-fishing in the Catskills, and we caught a lot of that kind of fish.”

“You’re a fisherman?”

Johan watched as she ladled fish, shrimp, and white broth into his bowl.

“I wouldn’t go that far. I was mediocre on my best days. Pops was great at it. We’d come home with tons of fish.”

They moved down the table.

“Sounds like you miss him.”

“I do. He passed awhile ago.”

“I miss both my grandpas.”

In an instant, he saw the joy dissipate from her face. Don’t make her cry.

“What is that?” Jeez, I might have to eat it. “If I eat whatever that is,” he nodded toward the bowl of beans and something, “will it bring that pretty smile of yours back? I didn’t mean to make you sad.”
