Western Justice

Doug Fletcher Book Series

Book 14

by Dean L. Hovey

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BOOK BLURB:

When human remains are found at the Vore Buffalo Jump, the short-staffed local sheriff’s department requests assistance from Park Service Investigators Doug and Jill Fletcher.

ATV tracks lead the investigators to the victim’s boots and a hunting blind constructed on the edge of the Black Hills National Forest. With more questions than answers the Fletchers find themselves pulled into the community dynamics of tiny Aladdin (population 15) where the cafĂ© and general store are the hub of information for the county.

The surprising identification of the victim only opens more questions about him, and his connection to the location of his murder. When the Fletchers follow up on the few leads provided by John Doe’s identification, they unwittingly open a can of worms.

EXCERPT TWO:

“I don’t know if you remember me, but this is Hank Stoddard. I’m the Crook County sheriff, in Wyoming.”

“I remember you, Sheriff. Have you had any shootouts lately?”

After a chuckle, Stoddard replied, “Well, we haven’t had to shoot anyone, but a body was found on a National Park Service site. I was wondering if you happened to be in the neighborhood and would be willing to take a look at it.”

“I’m in Texas right now. But you’ve intrigued me. Did you have another person fall at Devils Tower?”

“A volunteer found a body in Vore Buffalo Jump when they were cleaning up for the tourist season opening.”

I searched the recesses of my mind and vaguely remembered seeing a sign for the historic site but couldn’t recall the location. “Where is the buffalo jump?”

“It’s just west of Beulah, within sight of I-90.”

“That’s just across the border from South Dakota, right?”

“That would be the spot. I was hoping you were visiting your South Dakota in-laws and might be willing to take a peek at the mess that was once a person.”

“Let me make a couple of calls, Sheriff. We may need to make an unexpected trip to Spearfish.”

“I’d be mighty appreciative if you could make that happen. This death is strange. The coroner and I have stewed over this a lot. It appears the victim was dragged across the prairie like a horse thief, then dumped at the buffalo jump site at some point over the winter.”

“Dragged like a horse thief?”

“Dragging a horse thief across the prairie was called western justice.”

The Craziest Things I've Done for Research

Wow! You've given me so many possible topics, and I'd like to respond to each of them.

Let's talk about the craziest things I've done for research:

First of all, let me say that I'm a science geek. I love doing research and including tidbits of scientific detail in my books.

The most unusual research is probably my visit with the FBI tape expert. Yes, the FBI has a person whose entire job is understanding and analyzing the adhesive tape found at crime scenes. It was a fabulous afternoon and I learned that criminals prefer duct tape to almost any other variety of tape. Because of that, the expert, who is a Ph.D. chemist, had samples of duct tape mounted on Plexiglass sheets. She explained that each manufacturer has their own proprietary design, fiber pattern, and adhesive formula, which makes them identifiable. With that knowledge, she can analyze a piece of tape from a crime scene and tell the investigators which company manufactured that piece of tape. Beyond that, most manufacturers use natural rubber to make the adhesive. Being an agricultural product, natural rubber takes on the characteristics of the area where the rubber trees grow, the soil composition, the weather while it grows, and particulate contamination unique to the places it was processed, stored, and manufactured. Because of those things, the adhesive on a roll of tape is as unique as a fingerprint, and often allows the analyst to differentiate rolls of tape from different manufacturing runs.

During my discussion, I saw a "stadium" blanket mounted in a frame. The expert explained that an entire murder case had been proven based on the evidence collected from that blanket. They'd found DNA from the murderer and victim, fibers from the trunk of the murderer's car, fibers from the murderer's and victim's clothing, mud unique to the site of the murder, and other trace evidence linking the murderer to site and victim.
I've used bits of learning from that tour in at least half a dozen books.

In "Western Justice", the most recent of my Park Service mysteries, I used trace evidence recovered from the victim's body to help the investigators identify the victim, whose body had been dumped months before its discovery, at the Vore Buffalo Jump. My visit with Jackie Wyatt, the president of the Vore Buffalo Jump Foundation, provided additional details about the site, a potential location for the discovery, and additional background information about the history of the buffalo jump archaeology. I had discussions with the local coroner, a man who'd hunted in the Black Hills National Forest, a rancher who lives nearby, and the people working in the nearby Aladdin (Wyoming) General Store. Each of those discussions provided details that were salted into the book to give the story reality and "texture". My readers enjoy learning detailed tidbits about the Park Service locations I chose, and the scientific details behind the investigation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Hours drifted away as they immersed themselves in the accounts of the murder day, meticulously examining interviews with the neighbors. It was during this exhaustive search that Sarah stumbled upon an article that sent a shiver down her spine. Her face turned pale, and she repeated the word "no" in disbelief.
Concern etched on his features, Damian inquired, "Honey, what's wrong?" His worry grew as he witnessed his wife's deteriorating condition.
Handing him the article, Sarah whispered, "Read it. It's about the little girl who was murdered. She was adopted, just like Alicia. And look at the name. Shantel."
Damian's trembling hands held the article as he absorbed its contents. Shantel had been ten years old, the exact age their daughter had been when they had adopted her and moved to this very town. The uncanny similarities between the two girls sent a chill down his spine.
"D-Damian?" Sarah attempted to regain her husband's attention, her voice quivering. "Damian?"
"I'm sorry," he replied, placing the article down. "It's just... It hits too close to home. I mean, what are the odds that we would move into the very house where she was killed?"
"And the name, Damian. Shantel. How could Alicia possibly know about her? We never disclosed the fact that a murder had occurred in our home," Sarah lamented.
"Do you think she found out from someone else?" Damian posed the question, searching for answers.
"Who, Damian? She hardly leaves the house, except to go to school. Yet somehow, she learned about Shantel. Unless... never mind," Sarah dismissed a fleeting thought, her anxiety evident. "I'm letting my imagination run wild again. I've watched one too many horror movies," she chuckled nervously, masking her unease.
If I'd Never Heard of Me, Would I Read My Book?
I would read this book based on the blurb. On my previous novels I made the mistake of not going above and beyond with getting an excellent blurb written. I basically made a description of the book and that’s it. This time I had several people help me write a captivating blurb that hooks anyone who reads it.
As an independent author, It is hard to grab the attention of the average reader. There are tens of thousand authors out there competing for the attention of readers. This helped me realize that the cover and blurb are of the upmost importance. This is the sales pitch for the book as it exists.
I put in more time on this book than in the past with the blurb creating a sales pitch that would do more to make people want to pick this book up and read it. So as a reader myself, I look at the cover, and read the blurb and I know that I would want to read this book, even if I did not know the writer.
Poetry From My Heart: The Journey Continues by Paul Guerin - Book Tour - Book Blast - Giveaway - Enter Daily!
"Poetry: writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm."
"Poetry: a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm."
Poetry means different things to different people. For me, it is all about feelings. If it captures the emotions of the reader, a poem will resonate and fill the soul. It can mean everything to one person and not much at all to another. The mood of the reader, and no one else, determines the outcome.
For example, love poems are wonderful when you are in love, and their passion is amazing. If you are facing adversity, however, love poems likely will just annoy you.
In this second book, Poetry from my Heart: The Journey Continues, I have again divided the poems into categories which will fit your mood no matter what you are experiencing at the time you choose to explore them. There should be something for everyone, whether you are in love, out of love, hurt, lonely, angry, abandoned, or facing other challenges in your life.
Poetry has a healing power that nurtures the soul and quietens the mind and so I hope that whatever your situation is in life, you have found something here that helped you safely on your own journey.
The green hills of Ireland
The green hills of Ireland are calling to me
I hear their soft whisper wherever I roam
No matter whether on land or on sea
The green hills of Ireland keep calling me home
I lived in old Ireland as a young lad you see
And I left my heart there on some mossy hillside
Now I yearn to go back to set my heart free
And awaken a dream I can no longer hide
For I love your high mountains and windy seashore
Your hills and your streams rolling down to the sea
And I long to go home to my lost land of yore
And return to the Irish that’s deep within me
Now sheep in the pastures are calling to me
From the craggy rock walls that keep them inside
While the streams that run down from the mountains so free
Speak sparkling with hope and a joy they can’t hide
I long for the ocean on the Wild Atlantic Way
And the crazy coast road that winds in and out
And the sea breeze that whispers I hope you will stay
And the people all happily wandering about
I remember the old priory standing in ruins
Near Castletownroche with its bridge and its mill
I recall all the pubs with their loud Irish tunes
And my mind wanders back where my soul lingers still
I miss all the people so friendly and kind
With their musical language and soft Irish smiles
How they welcomed me home with a grace so refined
That I felt their great love from thousands of miles
The green hills of Ireland keep calling to me
Come home now we’re waiting to see you once more
For you know in your heart it’s the place you must be
So return again Irish to your green land of yore
About the Author:
Paul Guerin is an Irishman. He was born in September 1946 in Castletownroche, a small townland village in County Cork, Eire.
It was there in Castletownroche that his romantic imagination was sparked as he came to love and appreciate the magic of his surroundings. Those early experiences were the genesis of his poetry that emerged in later life.
As a young adult, Paul lived in London, England, where he became a chartered accountant.
At age 25, restless for adventure, Paul moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where he still resides today.
Paul is happily married and is a proud father and grandfather.
Paul writes poetry as the inspiration comes to him. As long as his mind, body and soul are willing companions and his spark of inspiration remains alive, he will continue to write.
This book is Paul's second publication in his Willing Heart series. His first book was published in the Spring of 2022 and is called Poetry from My Heart: A Journey through Feelings. The book reached #1 on Amazon’s Kindle chart in British Poetry and #2 in Poetry Anthologies November 2023.
EXCERPT TWO:
There were overhead cranes that slid on the metal tracking in the ceiling running the distances of the corridors. I was not sure why, but my gut was telling me there was something really strange going on. Something wasn’t right, I really felt like I was in danger. We were walking in a large group and being a Prospect I was at the back of the pack. Although I was walking, I became scared something was wrong. I didn't even have a gun with me. This was supposed to be a peaceful patch-over.
Then it happened, the shooting started. There were muzzle flashes all over the place. It appeared that we were surrounded and the guys were being shot and were dropping everywhere. Some of the guys were trying to return fire, but the shots appeared to be coming from everywhere.
I suddenly observed these strange metal objects rolling around with guns shooting at us. Something was killing us and there was blood everywhere. Suddenly these metal walls started falling from the roof, blocking doorways and corridors herding us into areas, to be slaughtered.
I had taken cover behind a large metal shelf and I heard somebody yelling at me to climb up the ladder to the roof. I looked over to the right and two corridors over someone else was climbing up another ladder to the roof.
I looked again and the guys were still being slaughtered. Out of fear and self preservation I climbed the ladder as fast as I could. Although I was afraid of heights I was more scared about being shot and killed.
I periodically glanced down and it was so strange, those mechanical things were still rolling around firing shots at everyone. I got to the top of the ladder and saw that there was a metal platform to stand on. I stood on the platform and I glanced down to where the other guy had climbed to. He had pushed some type of button and suddenly he went shooting down the corridor ceiling on some type of overhead crane track out of sight.
I saw some buttons on the adjacent panel and l pushed the green button. Holy shit! I went flying down the ceiling. It was a fast ride, like I was almost travelling through time. It appeared to have taken me thousands of feet in a few seconds. Then suddenly I stopped and I looked around. Off in the distance I still saw these weird metal walls dropping from the ceiling. They were blocking corridors and exits. They were still isolating the guys into smaller areas, to be slaughtered.
I then saw the adjacent guy diving into a room just before a metal wall blocked his exit. The large metal wall came down fast, then slowed for a few seconds before locking into the other metal wall. I looked to my left and saw a strange thing. There was a group of people all dressed in white coloured laboratory coats, rushing around in a room that had a large window overlooking the warehouse.
I was concerned that a metal wall was going to come down and that I was going to be trapped so I decided that I had to jump through the window and escape into that room. I took a few steps and jumped through the window as a metal wall started to come down. Shit!, I was going to be squashed and I was going to lose my legs. At the last second I was able to lift both my legs out of the way, while flipping over on my back. With a clang the metal wall crashed down.
I was laying on my back trying to figure out what the fuck was going on when I saw an Asian girl approaching me. She said, “Hi Rick, I’m Irene and I’m glad you were able to get out in time. You have to come with me now.”
“What the hell is going on?” I managed to ask.
She looked at me, “I will explain everything to you in a few minutes but we have to get decontaminated right away.” She turned and started walking. “Follow me, stay close and do what I do.”
