Prologue

Palm Grove Country Club

San Diego, California

Mitchell Pierce pushed back the fancy, linen-draped chair and nudged himself to his feet. Casting a quick glance around the flower-strewn outdoor tent, he tapped his heavy class ring against the side of the champagne flute two or three times. All around him, conversation dwindled to a barely-discernible buzz.

“If I could get everyone’s attention, please,” he said loudly, effectively shutting down the last of the whispers. “For those I have not yet met, I’m Mitch. Today, I have the honor of serving as best man at the wedding of my good friend and business partner, Brad McKenna, and his beautiful bride, Jody Fields McKenna.”

A round of applause echoed through the room, and Mitch used the interruption to swallow a mouthful of his sparkling cider before he continued.

“I’ve known Brad since childhood. First grade to be exact. The two of us caused quite a bit of mischief at McLaren Elementary. Which was likely the reason his parents pulled Brad out of PS112, and sent him to that fancy private school upstate. It didn’t matter though. We kept in touch, and then met up again our first year of college. Throughout the many, many years since, we’ve been inseparable. Or—at least we were—until Jody came along.”

The blushing bride shot him a mock glare, and then blew him a kiss, causing those closest to the head table to laugh.

Mindful of the crowd around him, Mitch cherry-picked a few of his favorite anecdotes about his and Brad’s adventures at UCLA, and during the first few years of their business partnership. In deference to Brad’s grandparents and parents, he made sure to sanitize a few of the more colorful stories.

Laughter—at his best friend’s expense—quickly became the highlight of Mitch’s entire day. It wasn’t that he disliked weddings. They were okay, he supposed. As long as they were someone else’s, and not his. Once another rash of snickers died down, Mitch began his closing remarks.

“I’d always considered Brad to be close to perfect. However, falling in love with Jody has made him an even better man. And, whether she realizes it or not, she’s also helped me win a rather sizable bet. One that Brad, Mike, Jason, Steve, and I made years ago.” Turning to face his best friend, Mitch added, “That’ll be five bucks and one pack of Transformer’s 1985 G1 Trading Cards each. Because you, Brad—and the three who fell before you—have made me ‘the last man standing’, and I intend to collect.”

This retelling of books V and VI of the epic poem Paradise Lost, written by John Milton, follows the story of Satan's rebellion and fall from grace. The Father announces his heir, Satan rebels, Abdiel tries to reason with the fallen angels, followed by a war scarring Heaven's landscape. Brother against brother, the rebellious few against their Father, a family torn apart by war, concluded by the victor, the Father's chosen Son, casting the disobedient out of paradise.

EXCERPT THREE:

At God’s declaration of war, dark clouds covered all of Heaven and smoke began to roll down the sacred hill. Then the countless hosts of Heaven marched on the enemy, fully armed from head to toe with helmets, spears, and shields.

Satan gathered together his army as well. He stood on his chariot, bright as the Sun, surrounded by his fiery angels with their golden shields, and marched toward the throne of God. He hoped that if he moved swiftly enough, he could reach the throne unopposed. Michael’s army dashed his hope very quickly. Before the armies clashed, Satan dismounted from his chariot and met with Abdiel on the battlefield.

Satan taunted him, “I see you have decided to bend your knee to the new Lord of Heaven. Tell me, Abdiel: is it your laziness that led you to accept eternal servitude?”

Abdiel was unfazed and responded sternly, “Better to serve in Heaven than rule in Hell!” With that, Abdiel threw a single strike on Satan’s helmet so lightly as to be done in mockery. It was so unexpected that it knocked Satan back ten steps before he had to bend to one knee to stop himself from losing balance and falling over. Both armies watched in disbelief. The rebels became filled with rage and the saints were filled with joy, and then Michael sounded the trumpet for his army to march.

MY BOOK REVIEW:

This book is an interesting, intriguing, and thrilling children's read!!

This book is a uniquely clever retelling of a powerful and classic story retold for a younger audience.  While the message is still deeply profound and challenging, the authors were able to find a way to successfully adapt this story for children.

The illustrations are significantly well done, with extensive detail, and help move the story along.

This book is full of strong, deep rooted messages and life lessons that are sure to connect and resonate with young readers.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it!! I think all children’s books readers will like this book too!! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading - you won't be disappointed!!

AUTHOR BIOS:

From a large Croatian family, Joseph Stemberga grew up with three sisters, a father, and a mother.

He studied theology at Concordia University, earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, as well as a bachelor’s degree in history and religions.

Inspired by a transcription of Dante’s Divine Comedy for a younger target audience, he contemplated and discovered that no such equivalent existed for another epic poem, Paradise Lost.

Thus, the work began . . .

Thomas Lane was inspired to work on the project in the same way the Irish monks copied and recopied older manuscripts to keep them from disappearing during the Dark Ages. Just as these monks never signed a single manuscript with their names, Lane prefers to use a pen name to honour their legacy and bring a classic work to life for its own sake.

Kamila Oleszczuk has been drawing since the age of three, but contrary to most children, she never stopped. Her passion for art and animation fueled her desire to create. Beyond the years of drawing throughout her childhood, she went on to learn more about different art mediums and forms by studying film animation at Concordia University. Kamila has been focusing mainly on children’s illustrations ever since.

Noon brought nothing.

Then the answer has to come at sunset.

Theneglamua, Lady Apex of the Triune of the College of Augury, rose again and groaned as much in frustration as at aching muscles and stiff joints.

Her simple, spare suite was the wrong place for answers, for the necessary calm . . . for anything. The whole building felt wrong as never before. Too elegant, too ostentatious, grandiose, its history of hubris . . . she wanted to escape. From the place, from responsibilities, from the last eight months.

We should never have moved here. That’s when all this started.

Only such a day could have boiled up the thought.

A small gulp of Temple Water and she returned to her mat, pulling herself cross-legged and irritably facing the northwestern window. At her knees, resting on a plain reading cushion, was the opened The Augury of Crisis.

The morning had been a protracted, unsuccessful struggle for serenity; it could not be so for the afternoon. Net and cage your thoughts, she heard her long-jarred teacher Zimnathua remind her. She did not feel her customary love and respect.

Where would you find serenity after these last eight months?

She took another deep breath in the continuing effort to throw off resentment. Sunset it would be then, a traditional marker of completions.

I’m the one caged . . . by blindness, she thought, staring at the book. Oh, largeness, grant me answers! Leave me not bereaved. Free me. Free us! Make me seeing!

The book was in the treasury of sacred tools and articles carried in a ceremonious procession to the new location when the college moved to Limneala House last year. Finding fresh places for the assortment, she had tapped the book up onto the top empty shelf of a tall case in her suite and forgotten about it.

Small, slim and bound on four sides, the book had been opened only twice before. The first: when the City was extricating itself from the crumbling Ritashra Empire, and the second: during the period after Independence when the City teetered on the cliff-edge of civil disorder brought on by squabbling schools. It had not been thought odd neither result had been preserved in any archive.

They wondered now.

Was Augury sick?

His fears escalate when Star warns him about two witches from school who plan on using his sister for a ritual. Lucas wants to trust Star; he needs someone to confide in since Melrose thinks his fear of witchcraft is irrational. But Star is unpredictable and has toyed with his emotions before.

As Lucas searches for answers, more mysteries begin to unravel about Melrose’s childhood, Star’s motives, and his own family legacy. Lucas will have to make life and death decisions; but whom can he trust, and how do you rescue someone who doesn’t want to be saved?

EXCERPT ONE:

Melrose sat on the bed across from someone with bouncy, blonde hair that flowed down her back. When the girl turned and flashed a smile at Lucas, goosebumps rose from his feet to his face. He did a little head jerk to move the hair out of his eyes, but yeah, Star, the hottest girl at Tangleforest High, was in his house, casual, like his sister’s room was a normal place to hang out.

Be cool, he told himself. “What’s up?” He looked to see what homework they had, thinking a tutoring session was the only sane explanation for Star’s visit. But instead of books or paper, a few oversized cards were laid out on the bed. A second ticked by before he realized what type of cards. Tarot. Immediately, the tension he’d felt earlier returned. “What are y’all doing?”

“Playing a fortune telling game,” Melrose said innocently.

Lucas’ adrenaline started to pump, and suddenly his ears buzzed, the details from the past erupting through his head in a concentrated instant: swirls of color, lost in the trees, gingerbread house of horror, the witch, the cage, the curse. “The hell you are.” He stormed across the room and with one quick whoosh, the cards went flying off the bed.

AUTHOR BIO:

Dorlana Vann loves taking elements from fairy tales (characters, mood, moral, plot) and mixing them with a paranormal element and then dropping them in a contemporary setting.

She has several supernatural fairy tale inspired stories, including novels, a short story collection, and Kindle Vella series. Her latest adventure is A Witchy Fairy Tale series; book 1: Potion.
