BLURB:

When Teresa Diaz's father is arrested in an ICE raid in a Los Angeles area city and deported back to Mexico, her family begins to come apart. She is a student at UCLA on a scholarship for undocumented aliens (Dreamers) looking to have a life in the U.S. in communications. Her brother in High school and her elementary school sister begin having serious troubles without a father in the household.

At work in a fast-food drive-through, Teri, as she wants to be known is approached by a Mexican gangbanger who offers to take you to her father. Doubting the guy wants more than picking her up, she resists, but day by day, as her sister is sent home from school and her brother is brought home dunk by the police, she gives in and goes across the border with him. Against her wishes, he takes her to a beach house in Tijuana and leaves her. She learns that illegal activities are going on in the house but without transportation, and without a birth certificate --either Mexican or American-- she can't cross the border alone.

After several days, virtually a prisoner, the owner of the house, a fat woman known as Mama Gorda arranges to get her across the border with a young Mexican man who rides a fast motorcycle. On the way, he takes her to lunch and there offers to talk her deeper into Mexico to find her father. She agrees, travels in his private plane and begins a romance while searching for her father in Michoacan state. The more she becomes involved, the more she is involved in activities she doesn't understand but suspects they're illegal.

Returning to Monte Vista, her LA area home, still without her father, she finds she can no longer return to UCLA, seeks a job, connects with a Latina who bullied her he school. When her brother is arrested for jobbery, Teri returns to Mexico seeking help from the people she suspects to belong to a cartel.

Ultimately, she is sponsored by the people in Mexico to participate in the Miss Mexico contest, not realizing it is the Cartel that is promoting her. In the end, she will face a life-changing decision whether to continue her romance with the son of the cartel's head or try to stand on her own. And whether to remain in Mexico or return to LA.

EXCERPT THREE:

Javier looks over at me from the pilot’s seat. He must have noticed my clenched hands, or my pallor or the way I sit slumped down in the seat. “First flight in a small plane?” he asks.

“First flight, period.”

He laughs. “An American girl like you has never flown?”

I think I hear a hint of sarcasm in his voice when he says, “American girl.”

I am an American girl, but not a privileged one. Mama wasn’t anxious to go any place that might require IDs. There was no extra money for vacations to places that required a plane ticket. At first, our family spent all our holidays with Rogelio and Lupe, but after Antonio died, mama and Lupe drifted apart.

“There’s only one place I’d want to go,” papa always answered when the question of travel came up, “back to Michoacán where mama and I grew up. I’d like to show you the beautiful land we came from.” At that, he always paused, getting a kind of sad-eyed look. “But we can’t go there, my little dove. So, we’ll go to Disneyland or Magic Mountain instead.”

To Javier, I’m an American girl, To Ryan, I’m a Latina. Mama Gorda said I was neither. She said I was lost. Who’s right? Who am I? I feel lost in this airplane. I sit up straighter in the cushy leather seat next to Javier.

“I am American,” I tell him. “I guess I’m a pretty naïve one though, jumping into a small plane with a man I hardly know. You think I’m a fool, don’t you? Or something worse.”

“Not a fool, Teresa — please let me call you that — but perhaps too trusting. That could get you in trouble in Mexico. Here it is better to trust no one.”

“Not even you?” I tease.

“Not even me.”

I hadn’t expected that. “Tell me why?”

“Please call me Javier.” His smile is warm and genuine, but he keeps his eyes straight ahead and his hands on the controls.

I wait for more.

Reluctantly, in little bits and pieces, as the plane flies on, he tells me about himself. He says his family is in the export and distribution business. They’ve done well, and he is benefiting from it. A little embarrassed, he says he hasn’t done much to contribute to the family business since graduating from Stanford.

“So why were you at Mama Gorda’s?” The question has bothered me from the start.

His eyes scan the horizon. It’s several seconds before he answers. “We each have our embarrassments,” he starts. “Sometimes it’s good not to ask too many questions. I won’t ask you about what you were doing at Carmen’s house, and I hope you’ll do the same for me. Suffice it to say my family’s company does some distribution work for her. Most of her business is over the Internet, of course, but we deliver some DVDs to L.A.”

“Smuggling, you mean?”

“As I said, some questions should not be asked or answered.”

We fly on in silence and land in Culiacán to refuel. Javier leads me into the tiny airport restaurant where we eat a quick lunch in silence. Questions ricochet in my head like the bullets that killed Antonio. What kind of danger am I in? Am I in danger with Javier? Who are all these people? Ever since I agreed to cross the border with Knobhead, it feels as if one bad decision after another is plaguing me. My life is out of control.

Sitting at a table in the small airport lounge, Javier breaks the silence as I sip an iced tea. “Look, I’m sorry if I shock you. I thought it was better to be honest with you from the start. You don’t understand life in Mexico so let me try to explain—”

“Explain? What’s to explain? You all but said you are a smuggler, Javier. what’s to explain?”

GUEST POSTS:

World-building can be the most important element of your book.  What media outlets, role-models and real-life inspirations did you draw from while writing this book?

La Paloma is a novel inspired by newspaper headlines. Several stories in the press came together in my head over time to form this story. First, and always for me, the character is primary. To begin with, Teresa Diaz, my primary character, is the recipient of an AB540 scholarship given to an undocumented alien by UCLA. Then she grew into the story of a DREAMer being deported from the U.S. and the uproar over their futures. Then came the border walls built to stop migrants coming across. (we used to call them fences now they’re walls.) Finally, the press was filled with stories about Mexican cartels.

My novel is not a gritty crime story, it’s a coming of age novel about a young undocumented Latina college student searching for her place in the world. Is it Mexico, the land of her birth and heritage? Or is it California, the land of opportunity she has been told to aspire to? Teri Diaz, the primary character, falls down a rabbit hole when her undocumented father is deported to Mexico and she must go in search of him to save her family. Her world and everything she thinks she knows is turned upside down. The story unfolds from there.

Falling in Love with the Main Characters:

I write about strong female characters. All my novels, Dream Helper, Delfina’s Gold, Their Golden Dreams and The Girl from the Lighthouse highlight females who are strong, self-reliant women. Virtually all my reviews stress the believability of my female characters. That doesn’t mean I have a formula, or even know how this happens. But I believe it comes from the organic way I write. That is, I do not plot stories; I let them evolve. Plotting, or deciding ahead what will happen in the story, only creates wooden, improbable stories with wooden improbable characters. Throughout the writing of La Paloma and my other novels, I tend to have an ongoing dialog with my primary characters. On more occasions that I care to mention, I’ve had characters tell me that what I have written for them will not work, that they would not do what I have written for them to do. And yes, they tell me how to correct my errors. When the writing is going well, my character, female or male, and I are in sync, and each character is different from all the others; they all have unique personalities; unique strengths and weaknesses. To be sure they have weaknesses, in fact, that’s often what makes them so real to my readers.

Five Reasons You Should Read My Book:

1.)  La Paloma is partly set in Mexico, a country with a bad reputation right now, but a beautiful, welcoming place, too, with an exciting history that may surprise readers.

2.)  Teresa Diaz is a beautiful Latina who is very committed to her family and knows she must step up when her father is deported.

3.)  La Paloma is not a crime story; it is a suspense/adventure about a young woman searching for her place in the world.

4.)  In one way or another, the questions Teresa faces in La Paloma are questions we all must answer as we become adults.

5.)  La Paloma is an exciting story that keeps the reader turning pages to find out what will happen to Teresa next.

6.)  The introduction to La Paloma is by Ocativo Paz: “To live is to be separated from what we were in order to approach what we are going to be in the mysterious future.”

GENRE: Fiction/Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Jennifer Torres, one of the three FIGs (Females of Intellectual Genius) who is a genius in both music and art, is the last to leave the closed rehearsal for her upcoming performance over Thanksgiving break at Carnegie Hall when she hears something in the darkened Hall. Recognizing the tilt of the woman’s head and the slight limp of the man as they hurry out an exit door, she realizes it is her parents who were supposedly killed in a terrible car accident when she was 15 years old.
Devastated and feeling betrayed, she sends a text to Carolina and the other two FIGs—THURGOOD. It is the code word they all agreed to use if ever one of them got into trouble or something happened that was too difficult to handle. They would all meet back at Carolina’s bungalow at Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women to figure it out.
As soon as they receive the text, because of their genius, Dara starts thinking of words in ancient Hebrew, German, and Yiddish, while Mackenzie’s visions of unique math formulae keep bringing up the date October 11, 1943. That is the date during World War II when the Nazis—the Kunstschutz—looted the paintings of targeted wealthy Jewish families and hid them away under Hitler’s orders. And as Carolina waits for the FIGs to return to Wood Rose, she hears warnings from Lyuba, her gypsy mother, to watch for the nightjar, the ancient name for the whip-poor-will.
As they search for “The Nightjar’s Promise” and the truth surrounding it, Carolina and the FIGs come face to face with evil that threatens to destroy not only their genius, but their very lives.
EXCERPT TWO:
The sudden loud clash of cymbals resounded across the stage and reverberated throughout the empty seating gallery bringing forth the image of the pitiful souls living in the dark, dank underground of Grand Central Terminal. The cacophony of sound created by a syncopation of strings, brass, and percussion filled the famous Hall of Carnegie until, on cue—the conductor’s gimlet eye—Jennifer gently raised her violin to her chin and began playing the soulful music she had created filled with emotion expressing fear and passion, heartbreak and sadness. It was the final movement—the third in her fugue of The Wish Rider. It was the movement that revealed the love Dara’s mother felt for her daughter and, once again, her heart-rending disappearance.
Images of that horrible underground dungeon and the invisible, forgotten downtrodden who existed there flashed into her thoughts, the memory of rancid and damp earth smells, the long-forgotten deteriorated red train car with the number 61 painted on its side in bright yellow, and Dara—sitting on the torn, broken-down sofa, alone, knowing her mother had left her—again.
Note after note, altering tempo and timbre, volume and pitch, Jennifer’s fingers tenderly, almost magically, caressed the neck of her violin, while the horsehair-stringed bow amplified the heart-felt passages, penetrating the very souls of all who listened. Jennifer was aware of nothing or no one. There was only The Wish Rider. Then, one by one, other instruments joined the principal violin—the string section, the woodwinds, and the brass, and finally the percussion. After reaching a crescendo, Jennifer once again picked up the melodic theme, this time in legato—slowly, softly, mournfully, until the notes disappeared—just like Dara’s mother—into haunting silence.
The Hall was hushed. The conductor, slightly disheveled, his arms now limp by his sides, smiled. They would be ready for their Thanksgiving performance. As before, no one spoke to Jennifer. They knew not to. After all, she was a genius with an unpredictable if not strange and prone-to-violence temperament—a FIG. She would remain turned inward, listening to the notes she had created and seeing the images until they were no more.
Not wanting to disturb her, the other musicians quietly packed up their instruments and followed the conductor quickly off the stage. Only Jennifer remained behind, still listening to the heart-breaking music, knowing what each note meant, lost in her “other” world. Liz, the graduate student at Juilliard who had been assigned to assist Jennifer with her needs while she was a student there, would be waiting outside for her no matter how long it took. She would make sure she got back to her room safely.
GUEST POST:
Using Historical Facts in the F.I.G. Mysteries:
Dara Roux, abandoned when she was 7 years old by her mother.  Exceptionally gifted in foreign languages. Orphan.
Mackenzie Yarborough, no record of her parents or where she was born. Exceptionally gifted in math and problem-solving. Orphan.
Jennifer Torres, both parents killed in an automobile accident when she was 16. Exceptionally gifted in music and art.  Orphan.
The Nightjar’s Promise is the fourth and final book in The F.I.G. Mysteries, and it was probably the most difficult and emotional one to write. The series begins with The Cadence of Gypsies, when Carolina Lovel takes the three F.I.G.s (Females of Intellectual Genius) to Frascoti, Italy, just before they are to graduate from Wood Rose Orphanage and Academy for Young Women. Her purpose is to keep her three students from getting into any more trouble with the headmaster, but to also to help her learn the connection between the Voynich Manuscript, the most mysterious document in the world, and a letter that was given to her on her 18th birthday when she learned that she was adopted. What they discover are Gypsies.
In Book 2, The Wish Rider, it is Dara who needs to find answers; specifically, why her mother abandoned her all of those years ago. With the help of Carolina, Mackenzie, and Jennifer, her search takes them to a secret, terrifying world—a sub-culture—beneath the Grand Central Terminal in New York City.
The Clock Flower, Book 3, is Mackenzie’s story. As she struggles to exist in a world that no longer has Dara and Jennifer and Carolina within touching distance, circumstances take her to an ancient world in China where she almost loses her life when she discovers her own truth.
In each of these books, I researched the historical subjects (the Voynich Manuscript and Gypsy culture, the underground of Grand Central Terminal, ancient Chinese beliefs and immortality) that related to each story and to each F.I.G. Jennifer’s story, however, was different in that she already knew what happened to her parents and why she was placed in Wood Rose Orphanage. That would all change when she discovers that what she thought she knew—that her parents had been killed in a horrible car accident—was wrong and her life is being threatened. This shocking realization takes Jennifer and her three best friends—Carolina, Dara, and Mackenzie—on a dangerous journey connected to Hitler and World War II.
As in my nonfiction books for adults, such as Velvalee Dickinson: The Doll Woman Spy; Kathryn Kelly: The Moll behind Machine Gun Kelly; and Assata Shakur: A 20th Century Escaped Slave, it is critical to be authentic and accurate when referencing historical facts in fiction. It is what makes a novel credible and more enjoyable to read. And, strangely enough, it adds a depth of emotion that would otherwise be lacking.
BLURB:
He never expects to find her there…
Officer Quinten Blackthorne is working undercover to bring the Rudnikov Mob Empire to its knees. He never expects to find his best friend’s baby sister, Becca, in the center of a powder keg situation at the infamous mobster’s home. With her life on the line, he does the only thing he can think of to save her – he pretends that she’s his fiancée, who knows nothing of his clandestine activities with the criminal enterprise, and stands as her stalwart protector.
Forced into marriage…
But Quinten never expects the mob boss to force them into marriage at gunpoint as a test of loyalty. Not to mention, the idea of her belonging to him isn’t unappealing, nor is he as averse to the prospect as he lets on. Becca, with her sweet curves and take no prisoners attitude, fascinates him, stirs him, and leaves him craving her submission. Yet his past is fraught with broken dreams and death, so he uses his friendship with her brother as a shield against his yearning to claim her as his own.
Resistance is futile…
However, circumstances soon compel Becca and Quinten to become the most unlikely allies in a deadly game of deception. Now they must depend on one another for survival. As they race to unlock the keys to breaking the case, will Quinten be able to maintain his hands-off policy with Becca? Or will he surrender to the earth-shattering passion and turn their marriage of convenience into the real deal?
Publisher’s Note: This steamy friends to lovers romance contains elements of power exchange. While it’s the third in the Crescent City Kings series, it can be enjoyed independently.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT TWO:

Not six weeks ago, she’d danced with the man at her brother’s wedding. Quinten was an officer with the New Orleans Police Department and one of her brother’s best friends. He’d been a groomsman in the wedding party, and had looked downright sinful in his tux, like a dark prince of the underworld.

Why was he here? What was he doing with Rudnikov?

Tonight, Quinten wore a charcoal gray suit, almost identical to the rest of the crime lord’s hired goons. Shock flitted through his warm cognac eyes the moment his gazed landed on her. The man was mister badass personified. The utter confidence Quinten exuded in his pinky made the hired goons look laughable at best in their attempts to seem imposing. He was the alpha of alphas, top of the food chain, and he knew it. The suit, combined with the ivory dress shirt, was unbuttoned at the neck and stretched over muscles that should be indecent. Becca knew that from experience. The night of the wedding, as he’d held her on the dance floor, she’d had the good fortune to feel those muscles flex beneath her hands. The man was ripped, and solid as a tank. He wore his hair, black as midnight, in a military style cut. And he had one of those masculine faces that tended to have perpetual dark stubble which, combined with his strong angular jaw, full lips, and dark slash of eyebrows, only served to make him hotter. As in:
five alarm fire, panties have disintegrated into ash, and a woman was ready and willing to do whatever the man wanted.

“Miss O’Malley, a pleasure to meet you. I thank you for coming to meet with me on such short notice. I’m Anton Rudnikov. My associate, Sasha, speaks highly of you and your gallery. I admit, I’ve not had the chance to attend one of your showings, but I am impressed with your use of color in your art,” Anton Rudnikov stated with a friendliness that belied the underlying air of hostility in the room.

“Thank you, Mister Rudnikov. You have a lovely home with some rather spectacular artwork. If I’m not mistaken, you have an original Renoir in your entryway.” Becca redirected her attention to the mob boss. She shook his hand, hoping she was hiding the dread coursing through her.

“You’ve got a good eye. If we had more time, I would give you a tour,” Rudnikov said with a frigid smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Did that mean her time was running out?

Quinten marched up beside Rudnikov, directing a scowl her way. His fury was evident; he glowered, apparently angry that she was there. Well, that made two of them. Becca wasn’t thrilled about the fact either. But he held her gaze, trying to impart some indistinct meaning that went straight over her stunned head. If she were being fanciful, she would have said he was pleading with her.
