Goddess of the Wild Thing
by Paul DeBlassie III

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Winner of the Independent Press Award and the NYC Big Book Award for Visionary Fiction!

Eve Sanchez, a scholar of esoteric studies, is driven into unreal dimensions of horror and hope as she encounters a seductive and frightening man, criminal lawyer Sam Shear.

Sam introduces Eve to a supernatural world in which the wicked powers of a surrogate mother’s twisted affection threaten love and life. Struggling to sort through right from wrong, frightened yet determined, Eve nears despair.

Goddess of the Wild Thing reveals the dramatic tale of one woman’s spiritual journey where metaphysical happenings, unexpected turns of fate, and unseen forces impact her ability to love and be loved.

In the magical realm of Aztlan del Sur, a mythopoeic land of hidden horrors and guiding spirits, Eve, with three friends and a wise old woman, is caught in an age-old struggle about love—whether bad love is better than no love— and discovers that love is a wild thing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT ONE:
Eve sharpened her focus. She saw the sharp nail of a witch’s right finger tracing Graciéla’s image on a foggy mirror in a grungy bathroom, touching the center of the mirror with a hatred so intense, the glass burned red hot. The mirror in Graciéla’s kitchen cracked. Shards jettisoned at the old healer then were magically warded off and drifted in place about her head and neck.
Graciéla’s energy, tired as she was, had fended off the pointed shards. She hadn’t been impaled. But the strain had ushered her from one world to the next. Death came not by the hand of another but by a weakened mind and body defending itself.
Eve, shaken, allowed her soft touch to stay on Graciéla’s forehead, confirming the horror of what she’d seen. Shamanic wisdom, often discussed between the two kindred souls, spoke to Eve as she stroked her friend’s head, remembering that death provided passage for one whose life had been well spent and whose time had come.
Eve wept.
After a few moments, she closed her friend’s green eyes and whispered tenderly, “Always my friend, always love, always together in life and in death.” She stood and wiped the tears from her eyes. A gray-brown, green-eyed, great horned owl hooted from the largest cottonwood branch outside the back window.
Eve heard Shirley finishing her call to the EMTs and police, and then walking to the front of the store to await their arrival.
One large shard lay at the end of the table, sharp tip pointed outward. It reflected Eve’s image, a glowing red ember menacingly centered at the brow point.
Eve Sanchez, the protagonist of the story, encounters a seductive and frightening man, criminal lawyer Sam Shear. He introduces Eve to a supernatural world in which the wicked powers of a surrogate mother’s twisted affection threaten love and life. The evil woman walks a fine line between sanity and insanity, dark and mysterious happenings in her wake. Where there’s love, there is often a woman who feels spurned and wills the demise of the loved woman. Eve struggles to discover the identity of the evil woman, a fierce battle with an unexpected outcome. In therapy, I help patients through love issues like this, Goddess of the Wild Thing dramatizing what happens more often that we think.
Amber Hollow
by Edgar Swamp
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Horror

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
On July 15, 1991, an isolated village in Northern Wisconsin is ground zero for an unprecedented, fiery tragedy. Of the community's 600 residents, there are only five survivors. Detailed accounts by the victims contradict each other; the only link is a man named Anthony Guntram, but because he is presumed to be dead, this claim can't be verified. Further investigations reveal a culture enshrouded in mystery. What are the survivors hiding?
Only the villagers know the secret of Amber Hollow, a place where sanity is checked at the town line and the parameters of reality become blurred. An unconventional horror story by design, Edgar Swamp delivers an action-driven page-turner that will keep readers guessing until the calamitous ending.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

The call came when they were five blocks from St. Mary’s, blaring from the radio in a raucous hiss of static that made both of them jump. Sadie looked at Jeremy, and the confusion in her eyes would be almost comical if the situation wasn’t so dire. He grabbed the handset on the radio, pressed the button.

“This is Detective Jeremy LeFevre. Please repeat the transmission.”

“There is a ten fifty-six A in progress on the Tower Drive Bridge, I repeat a ten fifty-six A.”

“We’re two miles from that location,” he said calmly, although his nerves suddenly felt as if they were live wires spitting enough electricity to power the entire city. “We’re en route.”

“Ten four,” the dispatcher said, and Sadie flipped a switch on the dash that fired up the siren. She then grabbed the bubble next to her, rolled down her window, and tossed it onto the top of the car where the magnet on the bottom held it firmly in place. For some reason, she always felt like she was in an episode of Starskey and Hutch when she did that.

“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Jeremy asked his partner.

“What are you thinking?”

“I don’t know, maybe I’m jumping to more conclusions, but somehow I think this is one call we need to take.”

Turned out, he was right.

GUEST POST:

Bring on the boo’s!  Everyone loves to hate the villain!  Tell us all about this truly loathed character and the inspiration behind their development.

All of my novels incorporate a person that is genuinely evil; I pride myself in coming up with such nasty villains that I’ve had some readers tell me they were a lot happier when they weren’t on the page! To me, that is the highest form of praise.

As much as we love reading books with characters that we can admire and root for, there has to be the other side of the coin, the person that makes everyone else’s life a living hell. In reality, we all know someone, on some level, that embodies these traits. At every job I have ever worked at, in many different industries, there has always been a person there who seemed to be the one destined to be “out to get me.” For everyone, there is a foil. In real life (hopefully) these people aren’t trying to kill you; they are just annoying to no end and get their jollies questioning every move you make, or pointing out your flaws or mistakes.

The villain can be anyone; they don’t have to be the stereotypical hockey-mask-wearing, chainsaw-wielding uber-creep. I once created an elderly female villain who was so repugnant that a reviewer who read the book told me that no one could possibly be THAT evil. The funny thing was, she was a real person I actually knew, and the things I described her as doing were things she’d really done. I embellished a little, but the main point is that she really WAS that evil; it is amazing what people can be capable of when they believe what they are doing is “right.”

It sometimes seems that with fiction, writers have a tendency to try and give their villains some redeeming value (not all, like Pennywise the Dancing Clown, who has none) but like Jason Vorhees (the aforementioned hockey-mask-wearing killer) who was ignored by the camp counselors while he was swimming, he drowned, his mother avenged him, and then he sought to take his own revenge. Sometimes these bad guys have a reason for wanting to slice and dice half-naked coeds!

In my first novel, The Gyre Mission, I created a bad guy who became evil by circumstance, and at a point in the book, I showed that he was just as much a victim as the people he was brutalizing; he’d been put in the position he was in unwillingly. I didn’t reveal this until the last quarter of the book because I didn’t want readers to sympathize with him, but near the end, I made it obvious because I wanted to bring more depth to his character.

In Amber Hollow, I created a villain that is a composite of many real-life people, from high-profile media darlings to regular people who committed criminal deeds, stories I pulled from news headlines. I needed to create a character who was not only homicidally insane, ruthless, and psychotically narcissistic but also charming and charismatic. In other words, a character that represented either a notorious serial killer or a politician! In fact, the villain in Amber Hollow is purported to be a politician, although with the rampant distortion of facts from the unreliable narrators I can’t tell you for sure if he is or isn’t — you’d have to read the book to see.

The point is, I set out to create a person who’s every deed is intended to benefit himself, one who manipulates people to do his bidding if he isn’t up to performing the evil task himself but who has no problem getting his hands dirty if necessary, happily in fact, over and over again. As I previously mentioned regarding the depth of a villain’s character, I like to give reasons why they became what they did; behind every killer, there has to be a backstory, right? Why did this person become the cold-hearted monster they are? What happened to make them take out such inhumane injustice on the innocent people around them? With my villain in Amber Hollow, I eschewed all of that and created a human being with utterly no compassion, one who would do anything for himself while putting everyone else in harm’s way. The ultimate epitome of a serial killer, one who kills with no remorse, is literally detached from all societal norms. That type of villain has no redeeming social value and cannot be sympathized with.

I think that is the scariest kind.

Death in the Family
by Lanny Larcinese

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Crime Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Donny Lentini is a talented young man hungry for his mother's love. To please her, he becomes guardian angel to his mob-wannabe father. When the father is murdered and found with his hands hacked off, Donny is dealt a set of cards in a game called vengeance. The pot is stacked high with chips; the ante, his soul and the lives of loved-ones. With the help of friends—ex-con, defrocked Jesuit Bill Conlon along with former high-school nemesis, Antwyne Claxton—he digs for whether the murder had anything to do with the mob's lust for a real estate parcel owned by the family of Donny's lover. He's new at this game. He doesn't cheat, but plays his cards well. And he gets what he wants.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT TWO:
I slid my foot over to touch Dad’s. I had promised Mother I’d look after him.
“Is this about the money you lost at the table?” I said. “Should we play a few more hands?”
German pounded his fist on the desk. “Don’t try to second-guess me, you punk! You’ll talk when I say, got it?”
I kept my eyes fixed on German’s. Six…seven…eight…
Dad reached over and put his hand on mine. “I didn’t lose the cleaners,” he said. A bead of sweat meandered toward his jaw. “The union was working on ’em going back three years now. It was already a done deal by the time I got there.”
“Whatever,” German said. “Just don’t let it happen anymore. And tell Donny here to mind his manners or you’ll be back driving a truck.”
The baseball bat leaning in a corner near German’s desk was an exclamation point that punctuated his directives. If it ever came down to that, I’d slash his throat with a rusty knife. Yet I still had to walk a tightrope. Dad would have preferred the bat to the demotion. Dad was a climber and German his future.
German picked up a couple of coded folders and put them into a filing cabinet, slamming the drawer down its rails like a runaway train.
“Oh, and Joojy wants to see you. I don’t know about what.”
“What about?” Dad said.
“You don’t hear? I said I don’t know! Maybe that thing. Now get outta here, both yiz. I got to take my daughter to ballet.”
GUEST POST:
The Story of My Story Called Death in the Family
Death in the Family is the first novel I wrote but the third book published after success at winning prizes for short stories. Actually, I wrote it five times, or, considering I’m a pantser and do not outline, more like one hundred five times.
Why so much work? It helps to be an arrogant novice and believe you can just grind out a novel. Where the arrogance came in was to conflate my facility with language, even occasional eloquence, with storytelling. Folks, they ain’t the same! Fortunately, I learned through networking with writers that a developmental edit would be valuable.
Indeed it was. Twenty pages of single-spaced critique eviscerating the manuscript, but also encouragement that I was on the right track and the book had good bones.
I put it in the drawer, wrote another novel, I Detest All My Sins, wrote more short work, studied craft, re-drafted Death in the Family two or three times, decided to change the entire story from third person to first, changed the theme, and BANG! Things came together! Suddenly I could create likable good guys (albeit in need of maturing ---  sound familiar?) and realistic bad guys.
The obstacles I faced on the path to publication of Death in the Family were mostly technical: issues of coherence; leaner sentences; bringing main characters’ needs into higher relief, etc. But also coping with the frustration of knowing it could be a good book if only I found a few keys critical to the story.
One was, as I said, changing from third person to first person. In doing so, I discovered that while it limited the main character’s point of view and what he could know and therefore express, it also allowed for more intimacy; I could get deeper inside this character. From there I could explore deep needs and once I knew those, saw how to make them collide with others in his world. It opened so many more story doors than “this happened then that happened then this happened,” etc.
After final edits, after many false starts and traipsing the learning curve, I finally fell in love with my characters. I’m so proud that I stuck with it, undeterred but open minded.
I love this book.
Retaliation
by Haley Cavanagh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: YA Dystopian Sci-Fi Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Sakota saved Astraeus and her friends from certain death, but in doing so, she gained the attention of the Oreck, who will stop at nothing to destroy everything in their path. With their ship severely damaged, Sakota and her crew land on a nearby planet and seek sanctuary while they make repairs to return home. But nothing on this perfect planet is as it appears, and Sakota soon learns they've traded one danger for another. Hunted and targeted, will Sakota be able to carry out her mission, or will everyone she cares about be destroyed?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT ONE:

Sakota took a deep breath. “Okay. Let’s do it. We’re not going to survive if we don’t.” Hisoka and Tatiana turned around to man their consoles. She ate the last of her ration piece and slipped her hand into Astraeus’s. The escape pod reached the mouth of the black hole, then without warning, surged forward.

When Sakota was a child, long before Alistair rescued her from the orphanage in the squalid wasteland of London, the other children liked to play a game called Lights Out. In the main room where she bunked with fifteen other girls, a shaft of light streamed in from the hallway, in the same spot every night, like clockwork. The adult on night duty would check in once an hour and perform a headcount as they slept.

A few nights a week, a handful of the girls awakened and killed the hallway lights so they could scare and torture whomever they didn’t like among them. It was a powerful systematic lesson, however cruel. Sakota grew up knowing her place at the bottom rung of life. She’d never fit into the cookie-cutter type molding the upper-class girls had been bred for. She’d proved early on that she’d fight back with a vengeance when provoked, but she wasn’t certain which was worse; being preyed upon or listening to other girls’ pleas for help as she lay in the pitch-black room. The memory had stayed with her well into adulthood, as well as the countless times she could and should have stepped in to help instead of being crippled by primal fear and self-preservation. Children could be cruel. But the fear she’d experienced then was nothing, nothing, compared to being sucked into a black hole.

The escape pod whirled inside the conduit and pitched them around in a circle. They spun, at the mercy of inexhaustible energy along the black hole’s trajectory. Though she’d experienced raw fear when the Oreck had taken over the Sleipnir science vessel and killed everyone, this was different. Before, she at least had an idea what she was up against. Three razor-sharp talons emerging from claws didn’t lie. Being sucked into the black hole was like being an ant in a cyclone.

Astraeus squeezed her palm reassuringly. She turned and looked at him. They were both strapped in, tight.

Astraeus squeezed her hand. “Don’t be afraid.”

The speed of the escape pod amplified. Ribbons of light streamed past the windows like gossamer silk as the ship darted into unknown darkness. Sakota gritted her teeth. Oh, screw not acting afraid. She was terrified.
